What zero cost action could we ask of our new Government in their first 100 days? Well here is an essential piece for any advocate of arts education. Department for Culture, Media and Sport Department for Education An end to dismissive references to ‘ mickey mouse’ education would be an easy win. Getting behind our amazing creative sector and the educators who nurture our creative workforce would be a powerful start.

Spotlight on Purposeful Ventures’ Social Entrepreneur in Residence: Sophie Humphreys OBE    We aim to provide the highest level of expertise to our ventures. That is why we are delighted to have Sophie on the Purposeful Ventures team 👏 🎉    Sophie is the co-founder of two national organisations aimed at breaking destructive cycles. Pause - Creating Space for Change enables vulnerable women to take control of their lives. It has also saved local authorities millions of pounds collectively by preventing more children being taken into care. SHiFT exists to break the destructive cycle of children caught up in, or at risk of, crime.     The #BreakingCycles 'core ingredients' that Sophie devised have been evidenced as effective in breaking destructive cycles and creating wider system change. These ingredients are at the centre of Pause and SHiFT's work and are beginning to be applied to sector-wide issues. Sophie also undertakes serious case reviews into child deaths and offers child protection expertise to national and international governments.       With a wealth of knowledge and first-hand entrepreneurial experience, Sophie has been bringing her expertise to bear in our Children & Families portfolio. She is supporting Lighthouse Pedagogy Trust and other PV partner ventures, using her Breaking Cycles lens to help the teams stress-test their ideas, distil their messaging and define their approach to scaling.      Through working closely with founders and embodying Purposeful Ventures’ high-challenge, high-support ethos, Sophie equips these early-stage organisations to set themselves up for a successful entry to the sector and long-term impact 💪 🏆      The methods Sophie employs enable us to identify the most determined and impact-driven organisations for our portfolios; she is working closely with Michael Clark to further develop Purposeful Ventures’ framework for evaluating pipeline ventures. 𝐆𝐁 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲...𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 It was great to spend time with Chair of Great British Energy Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng this morning, hearing first hand his perspectives on GBE’s scope, ambition and challenges. I was able to share details about the Chamber, our work on behalf of members and role in the regional economic partnership. And to reinforce that the globally unique energy eco-system in the North-east of Scotland is already progressing the transition agenda and stands ready to support GBE in turbocharging our future energy ambitions. Of course, I caveated this by discussing the potential ‘gap’ that was being caused by current oil & gas fiscal policy and rhetoric that risks seeing the capital, people, supply chain businesses and equipment needed to accelerate clean energy projects in the North Sea being lost overseas or perhaps altogether. We discussed our submission to the Great British Energy Bill Call for Written Evidence and the work being led by British Chambers of Commerce on securing the long-term future for North Sea energy production. I reiterated that the AGCC team is here to support GBE in any way we can. From convening the supply chain to communicating key messages through our media channels. From sector research to providing collateral to attract staff to relocate here. And from playing a role in inward investment activity to advising on future office accommodation. On the latter point, I was delighted to hear Juergen confirm his commitment to support our efforts to reenergise and repopulate Aberdeen city centre by locating the GBE HQ there. Great to read the Manifesto for Government from the eoa . The employee owned sector is a growing, thriving and bouyant contributor to the U.K. economy generating sustainable growth and resilient businesses with teams that are truly invested in the long term success of the companies in which they work. However there is much more that can be done to deliver more diverse, interesting and meaningful jobs across the sector particularly in rural communities.

Moaning about the trains is one of the Great British Pastimes (along with afternoon tea, being quite bad at sports we invented, and 'trickledown economics'). However, research from Dr Yuerong Zhang at UCL is showing we need to up our complaining game, in preparation for the massive disruption that the climate emergency will wreak on our rails. Britain's rail network is uniquely vulnerable - partly due to the bottlenecks caused by the actual shape of the UK itself, which makes it harder to increase resilience by building alternative routes. Yuerong's AI applications can help us measure weather disruption more accurately, and improve our emergency responses. However, Yuerong is also examining ways we can change our understanding of resilience, and accept what disruption can teach us. Because disruption is coming, whether we face it or not. It was fascinating to explore these concepts with Yuerong, and a pleasure (as always) working with Jo Marshall at All Things Words and Liz Griffith at The Bartlett, UCL's Faculty of the Built Environment to produce the finished piece.

This is a fascinating report from the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the UK #CreativeIndustries, which includes some compelling data directly relating to the Designer #Fashion sector. The UK remains the number 2 market (behind the USA) for FDI in Design and Designer Fashion. Between 2013-2023, FDI into the UK Design and Designer Fashion sector was 21% new investment, 17% reinvestment and 63% M&A activity. The vast majority of M&A activity comes from the USA and EU, with about 50% of new investment coming from the Rest of the World. Lots to think about for fashion #brands and #investors thinking about scaling creative businesses in the current market.

Strongly recommend reading this new report from Green Alliance and PwC UK Changing Fashion: what people really want from a green fashion industry Times are changing, priorities are changing and non expert public are clearly invested in progressive circular economy prinicples. This work gives us more clues on where we focus for better policy, businesses and progress.

🚨 NEW POLLING🚨 ⏬The next government will enter Downing Street with trust shattered and cynical voters expecting change 📊In exclusive polling for Tim Shipman #TheSundayTimes, Charlesbye analysed public attitudes to the party manifestos & the scale of the problem faced. 📜Manifestos are important for people (70%) when deciding how they will vote. While only 9% say they will read them, 63% pick up details from TV news, social media & newspapers 👎 Yet just 25% of the public trust political parties to deliver on their manifesto promises When it comes to the Tories, the findings are dire: 🔵❌Just 13% believe they will deliver their manifesto 🔵❌ And voters think they will fail to deliver 8 out of 10 key policies polled. Of those: ✈️❌Only 20% believe flights to Rwanda will take off 🪖❌ Just 24% think they will launch national service scheme 👩🏽‍⚕️❌17% expect the recruitment of 92,000 more nurses and 28,000 more doctors 🏡❌ 18% believe they will build 1.6m new homes Labour only fared marginally better: 🔴❌Voters think they will fail to deliver 7 out of 10 key manifesto policies polled. Of those: 🏥❌Only 24% think they will deliver 40,000 more NHS appointments 👨🏽‍🏫❌30% believe they will recruit 6,500 new teachers 🗳️❌38% think they will extend the vote to 16-year-olds 🌲❌ 34% expect the creation of publicly-owned company, Great British Energy A key finding for Labour is that three in ten members of the public expect key issues to be fixed in two years — but a quarter don’t believe they will be fixed at all. What does this mean for a new government? Trust in politics has collapsed. Voters do not believe any political party will deliver on their promises - and have almost entirely lost faith in the Tories and its leadership. Labour needs to earn public trust - and quickly. Voters are currently motivated to remove the Conservatives from office, not install a Labour government. This ‘enthusiasm deficit’ will be quickly exposed if they fail to deliver the change they have promised once in office. Actions must start to match rhetoric or Labour will likely suffer the same grim fate as the Conservatives. Grants to Decarbonise the UK’s Creative Industries - Round 2 Open The Creative Catalyst Challenge Fund enables creative talent to apply their capacity for innovation to tackle a specific challenge within the industry. The Fund is intended to be used for the research and development of an innovative new product/system or process that decarbonises or reduces waste within the creative industries, reducing impacts on the climate and/or leading towards net zero. For Round 2, the overall £250,000 funding pot will be allocated as follows: One award of up to £100,000 for more established businesses with market traction and customers of a product, ideally with co-investment in place. Two awards of up to £50,000 each for businesses 2+ years old looking to develop a new product or idea. Two awards of up to £25,000 each for very early-stage/new businesses and R&D ideas. Applications are invited from registered limited companies/SMEs based in the UK and working in the following sub-sectors of the creative industries: Music & Sound Advertising & Marketing Crafts Visual Arts Dance, Theatre & Performance Architecture Publishing AR, VR & Immersive Createch TV & Broadcasting Film Gaming The funding can be used for a variety of purposes, for example: Developing/ prototyping new tech for reducing excess waste at music festivals. Developing innovative new manufacturing processes for an everyday product within a creative industry. Innovation in access to power – eg on a film set. The London Borough of Hillingdon has set out four principles and five workstreams and committed to a £9m investment as part of a new #digital #strategy setting out its vision for the next three years - Elements of the #infrastructure workstream include ensuring that any new systems procured use #open #APIs (🎉), working towards a small number of specialist systems with #shared #components, and ensuring systems are #SecureByDefault. Other workstreams will focus on: building services online by default; sourcing better #data to make better decisions; #modernising council infrastructure and systems; building digital #capacity and #inclusion; and delivering a digital place. I'm increasingly feeling pangs of guilt about the 'oh christs', 'too bigs', 'too smalls', 'too not todays' that I have cluttering up my wardrobe. That and a creeping sense of discomfort when I have to return goods as I wonder about the waste - packaging, time, transportation. Really interesting webinar on how the industry and consumers can not just mitigate our addiction to fashion but perhaps shop wiser and less frequently.

Interesting article by William Chamberlain around working in a place making context and our relationship with communities - whilst London has a very different context to the regions there is always principles that remain at heart of creativity and culture in the heart of our villages , towns and cities - worth a read 👇🏽👇🏽
