💦 Could we increase utility-scale hydrogen yield? 💦 Utility-scale offshore hydrogen projects like Kintore Hydrogen are exactly what the UK needs to reach net zero. With 3GW of total electrolyser capacity once complete, the project will provide 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen per annum, accounting for 30% of the UK Government’s low-carbon hydrogen production target. But could the yield of these projects be increased? Could we get more hydrogen out of projects like this by switching out electrolysers for something else? Can we get more bang for our buck, essentially? Plasmolysis is an alternative to standard electrolysis that uses plasma thermolysis to maximise low-carbon hydrogen production. When powered by renewable energy, early testing has shown it creates more green hydrogen for a given power input. Standard PEM electrolysers have an efficiency of between 47-66 kWh/kgH2. Phase 2 of Tetronics’ government-funded testing of Plasmolysis has shown results of 36-40 kWh/kgH2, which is potentially a 40% improvement. Our technology is currently at commercial development plant scale. As time goes on, we’ll further highlight plasmolysis’ potential for the future of the green hydrogen economy. Yet, as investment in utility scale hydrogen continues, and research like ours brings forward electrolyser alternatives, I feel confident that 3GW of capacity could soon produce more than 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen per annum. And with new tech like NET Power and 8RH2 natural gas can be used to eliminate emissions of electricity and hydrogen! It's the elimination of emissions, not the oil and gas industry.

UK Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy - Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) released its Operationalising a Carbon Regulator report, which aims to guide the development of a robust regulatory framework for carbon accounting in the UK. ESC states that a Carbon Regulator would be “crucial” to the standardisation of carbon accounting practices, emphasising that the implementation of a Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy by: reducing investment risks; building investor, business, and consumer confidence; and levelling the playing field for innovators. The report outlines that a UK Carbon Regulator could utilise its potential position as a first mover to promote the credibility of UK low carbon industry, while demonstrating the value of nationally coordinated carbon accounting regulations. Carbon Capture - Scotland left out again! Another snub by a disrespectful, divisive, short-sighted London government. Starmer announced the funding for CCS projects in Merseyside and Cleveland, but nothing has been promised for the Acorn project in Buchan, leaving its future uncertain. The funding announced today has been exclusively allocated to so-called Track 1 carbon capture projects, leaving projects like Acorn, classified as Track 2, to await a possible future funding round which may or may not take place. The Acorn project has been promised British Government funding for a decade, but it has failed to materialise and now the Buchan project has been passed over a third time. .... The answer? In a recent interview with Nukta, Faraz Khan MBE, CEO and Partner at #Spectreco, discussed the United Kingdom’s landmark achievement in closing its last coal-fired power plant, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, marking the end of 140 years of coal-based electricity generation. He highlighted the UK’s ambitious policies, carbon pricing mechanisms, and renewable energy growth that made this transition possible, offering valuable lessons for other nations facing coal dependency. Faraz Khan explained that the UK’s Climate Change Act of 2008, combined with a strong carbon pricing system, made coal economically unsustainable, driving a shift towards wind and solar power, with wind energy rising to 25% of the energy mix by 2023. The just transition strategy also ensured that workers in coal-dependent regions were retrained, minimizing economic disruption. Khan noted that while countries like China and India face greater challenges due to their reliance on coal, the UK’s experience shows that ambitious coal phase-outs are achievable with the right policies and investment in renewables. U.K. Economic Growth and Energy Security There are many challenges in our economy but one sector which has the potential to catalyse recovery and growth across the economy - is the energy sector. This investment from ScottishPower is significant, and its not the only source of investment into U.K. critical energy infrastructure. What also needs to be understood is that within these investments - it’s not “just” business as usual - the demand for diversity in skills, experience and people, to fulfil the need for new capabilities in emergent technologies as these businesses adapt towards the stewardship of cyber physical energy networks. Meaning that their are opportunities for new talents in data, digitalisation, AI etc which will underpin the business transformation of these strategic companies. In my view is that this is one of the most integral, interesting and dynamic industries, which offers so much to future talents who want a rewarding career safeguard our sustainable and critical energy infrastructure.
