The company has agreed a statement of principles with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, it said. It has also awarded front-end engineering design contracts with Costain and Technip Energies. "These agreements mark further critical milestones for H2Teesside as the project continues to move towards EPC contracts and then construction," BP UK VP for hydrogen and CCUS Andy Lane said in the statement. "The project could play a critical role in decarbonizing industry on Teesside, helping to transform the region into a leading hydrogen hub and kickstart the UK's low-carbon hydrogen economy." This work underpins some of what is being announced today. 🧵 https://lnkd.in/eD75Rw3j Report argues for 4 enhanced roles for the state: first, as a planner or 'system architect', second, as a 'pre-developer'; third, as investor; fourth as enabler. What benefits will this bring? 1) Speed: offshore wind deployed 2 to 4 years faster due to enhanced coordination and efficiencies in project development and deployment. 2) A transfer of up to £35bn from producers to consumers out to 2050 for offshore wind alone 3) Savings of up to c. £1bn in regret development expenditure for offshore wind projects that ultimately fail, with similar benefits possible for onshore projects. 4) A reduction in constraint costs which are projected to reach £3bn per year in the late 2020s. 5) Greater certainty for supply chain, leading to more investment and domestic capacity. 6) More efficient and resilient deployment of network infrastructure and system assets, reducing total cost. 7) Acceleration of innovation and commercialisation of new technologies.

After reading more about how #politics are shifting this year, I appreciate seeing the #UK looking to position itself again as a #sustainability race leader. 🌎 Climate policies have significantly helped us reduce our #emissions trajectory from 4.5ºC to 2.5/2.9ºC, highlighting their importance in mitigating the effects of #ClimateChange. 🪴 It would be great to see stronger and more policies focused on #biodiversity too.

At COP29, Keir Starmer has committed to cutting UK greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 compared to 1990. Just some figures to illustrate what this means. All the following data are from the Statistical Review of WorldEnergy2024 (https://lnkd.in/eQks7mQQ) Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Emissions from Energy, Process Emissions, Methane, and Flaring for the UK,– In 1990 – 595.2 million tonnes. So by 2035, they should be 19% of this value i.e. 113 million tonnes In 2023, they were 327 million tonnes. So, if other greenhouse gas sources (e.g. livestock farming) are excluded, fossil fuel energy contribution in 2035 has to be reduced by 65% (1-113/327) compared to 2023. In 2023, fossil fuels (gas and oil mostly) provided 5.26 exajoules, EJ (10^18 joules) of energy. If 65% of this has to be replaced , UK has to find 3.44 EJ of CO2-neutral energy. Let us assume that miraculously, UK will reduce primary energy consumption by 40% by 2035. It will still need to find 2.06 EJ of CO2-free energy. This is equivalent to providing 65.3 GW of continuous CO2-free energy. That is build 22 nuclear power plants of the size of Hinckley point C or 145 GW of wind assuming a very optimistic capacity factor, CF, of 0.45. Currently, CF for wind is 0.31 i.e. if you have 1 GW installed, you get 0.31 GW averaged over the year (for solar, CF is 0.11). For reference, currently the installed wind capacity is 30.2 GW. UK cannot really build 22 Hinckley point Cs or install 5 times the current wind capacity in the next 11 years. So there has to be a massive change in lifestyle on top of the 60% reduction in energy consumption assumed – enormous reductions in meat and dairy consumption, aviation, steel and cement industries. I think they are also relying on carbon capture and storage, a technology incredibly challenging to deploy at scale. All this to be done in 11 years appears to be fantasy.

🚨 Prediction for discussions around the Just Transition 🚨 As this article shows, most discussions around the Just Transition currently focus on what happens to oil and gas workers as we decarbonise. This narrative works well as a piece of political communication for constituencies with a lot of such workers. However, check out these numbers in the article about wages: 👉 “North Sea workers have an annual average salary of £88,000, while those working in the oil and gas supply chain earn an average of £51,000 a year. This is well above the average annual salary of £29,000 in Scotland – and above the £42,600 average wage of employees in the clean energy sector” Once we have moved beyond surface-level dialogue around the Just Transition, I doubt the general population is going to be that concerned about the “just” treatment of workers who earned 2-3 times more than average (in work that caused the climate crisis in the first place) 🤔 🧠 The Just Transition MUST pivot to be about EVERYONE, not just oil and gas workers. UK Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy - Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) released its Operationalising a Carbon Regulator report, which aims to guide the development of a robust regulatory framework for carbon accounting in the UK. ESC states that a Carbon Regulator would be “crucial” to the standardisation of carbon accounting practices, emphasising that the implementation of a Carbon Regulator is essential for the functioning of a net zero economy by: reducing investment risks; building investor, business, and consumer confidence; and levelling the playing field for innovators. The report outlines that a UK Carbon Regulator could utilise its potential position as a first mover to promote the credibility of UK low carbon industry, while demonstrating the value of nationally coordinated carbon accounting regulations. In Qatar with the successful examples of PPP in Public Sector projects, the trend is on the rise to other sectors. To all those involved in projects and sourcing in Qatar, I recommend following Project 13 and read about their Framework. It is a partnership initiative between academia, public, and private sector to address the projects and construction dilemmas. The UK legislation’s roll out/update to “Construction Playbook” and “Sourcing playbook” guidances in parallel to support those initiatives are, in my opinion, exemplary of complimenting knowledge and awareness gaps from two different ways!
