Data literacy is the start, not the end. Data literacy has become the 'thing' recently, and for good reason. Companies have spent eye watering amounts of money building the data infrastructure and getting to grips with reporting, analytics. So now the question is, 'do the business know how to use the stuff we've given them'? Enter the data literacy programme. The future will go one step further. As hunger for disruptive technology increases exponentially, technical specialists will move closer to such disruptive tech as the market will naturally move this talent pool. Result - foundational expertise like Data Architecture will suffer an even bigger talent shortage problem than today. Solution - the end user will need to "self-architect" their data. They will need skills in running and maintaining 'the infrastructure', while tech/product teams drive the bottom line benefit for Boards and shareholders with the latest shiny toy. This in itself is going to require better Data Mgmt (incl. data architecture) tooling, but also better business-ready Data Management learning content targeted at the end-user, not the data professional. There isn't a textbook to follow nor are there accreditations to acquire to show you how to succeed at it. Most people that I speak to in data leadership roles today - are struggling. They've been thrust into this role with little to no preparation or relevant leadership skills. The want to succeed but have trouble know where to focus and want efforts will bring about the right results. Good news this, this was the topic for my newsletter yesterday. Over the years as a Chief Data & Analytics Officer, it has become evident to me that CDAO's lack the essential support systems needed to be successful when compared to roles like CEO, CIO, and CFO. This lack of support and role clarity lead to challenges and a short "life expectancy" of around two years for CDAO's at most companies. Having driven Data and AI transformations at various companies, I have experienced this lack of support system myself. To help address this gap, I am launching a series titled "Ask me anything about data," where I will share my experiences and insights in this domain. I will be focusing on content and discussions through 1-2 minute video responses to each question I receive. While the video quality may not be professional, the aim is to add value through sharing experiences and fostering discussions. It was a huge joy to be invited to the Data Governance panel hosted by an amazing Joanne B. at Schroders DataCon! Unfortunately we couldn’t save all of the worlds’ problems but I think that we’ve managed to cover quite a lot in just under 30 minutes. We talked about: 💡a complete reframing of the role of data governance and how it is a fundamental enabler, crucial for moving towards more product-centric mindset when it comes to designing and building data products and services of the future; 💡the thrill and excitement about AI and the minefield of AI-related regulations, US and EU embracing a drastically different approach meaning that any companies with a global presence will have to adopt a variety of region-specific strategies when it comes to adopting latest advancements in LLMs and the trade-offs that will have to be made along the way; 💡how trust is still a fundamental value that we all hold dear and how keeping your data trustworthy and preventing biases from being accidentally introduced to your human or artificial intelligence driven decision making is what’s it all about really. It was absolutely wonderful meeting Harry Hazelwood of Kubrick Group and Jason Yung of Amazon Web Services (AWS) - I hope it’s not too long until we can continue the conversation 🙌🏻 Bumping into Rowena Humby was an additional spark of thrill and delight, she gave a great talk before us. The path to a single source of truth isn’t just technical; it’s ethical. By cultivating virtue in data governance, we don’t just manage information better - we become better stewards of the truth itself. As organisations increasingly rely on data to drive/inform their decisions, the real challenge isn’t collecting more information - it’s fostering the right principles. Organisations often focus on technology and tools to manage their data, but at the heart of every successful data governance initiative lies something far less tangible: virtue. Data governance is not just a technical challenge; it’s a moral one. It asks us to balance competing priorities, overcome silos, and create a culture of trust - none of which can be achieved without virtue-driven leadership. Aristotle taught that virtues are habits of character cultivated through deliberate practice. In the realm of data, these virtues might include: - prudence: ensuring decisions are well-considered - justice: balancing the needs of different stakeholders - accountability: taking ownership of data integrity To build a foundation of truth, organisations must encourage collaboration across departments, prioritise clarity over convenience, and reward behaviours that uphold shared standards. Friction is a change agent. I've seen a lot of friction in data teams recently - either between roles in the team or better data and other teams within the business. Don't shy away from the friction, embrace that this means people want change and they are now willing to do it. If you had complacency instead - you'd be in so much more trouble. Friction = opportunity for change. Take advantage of it.

The rise in data literacy initiatives is predicated on a problematic assumption. That assumption is - 'the data is good and the tooling is good now let's give the business skills to use it'. Problem #1 - the data is not good because you haven't supported Data Management. Problem #2 - the tooling can't bridge your lack of understanding of your data. Problem #3 - you haven't defined "good" for your needs. Problem #4 - your default is to blame the service functions (e.g. IT) and not take accountability for results with data and tech. So, before starting a data literacy initiative, first confirm that: a) the producers/consumers understand their responsibilities for Data Management b) similarly, expose the data challenges (don't hide behind a dashboard) c) define what "good" means (and no, 'all the data being correct' is not good enough) d) show leadership in positively seeking to change the culture #data #dataliteracy #datamanagement

Keeping Things Simple ... ... is the way I like to do things. Don't over-complicate - very 'Occams Razor'. It's one of the reasons I joined Data Cubed as we align in terms of making sure systems, processes & solutions are the simplest version that ensures the desired outcome. Sometimes that's really tough. So many of the clients we work with want to be able to get reliable management information simply and quickly, but their current data infrastructure consists of a variety of disparate and disconnected sources making their process complicated and protracted. Something that can (should be) live and instantaneous can often take multiple days of effort. Does this resonate with you? ... having to spend an unreasonable amount of time every month producing management & board reports from various programmes, platforms & spreadsheets? I KNOW the majority of businesses find themselves in this boat - but don't know which way to row; how long it might take to reach land; how much effort it's going to take ir how much it's going to cost. Knowledge is power and developing an understanding of what it will take to be able to effectively and simply utilize the phenomenal amounts of data you have HAS to be worth it, right? Out with the old, in with the new.... To shake off the stigma attached with “Governance” and the negative perception that Data Governance adds complexity and layers of red tape, we have rebranded our function to Data Enablement, effective immediately. In an industry so data centric, Data Governance is still widely misunderstood and seen as bureaucratic, control driven, blocking innovation with red tape. Question for the Tableau people out there. Something that was possible, and I'm not sure if it remains possible... I want a dashboard on the server to be viewed via another (internal) application. All simple enough, use an iframe and display it. Yes, each possible user needs a viewer licence, but I have a solution to that. However, I don't want the users to see the dashboard on the server. The user needs View rights to see the dashboard in the app. I can put the dashboard in a project, and hide that project, so they can't find it via Projects. But if the user chooses to see Workbooks or Views via the Explore menu, the dashboard appears. Is there a way to set up the permissions to prevent the user viewing the dashboard on the server? Not relevant any more, but in a prior version of Tableau Server, it was possible simply by hiding the project. But a change to the server interface means that no longer works. #tableau #tableauserver
