Despite a decrease in crime in England and Wales, a majority of Britons, 6 out of 10, believe that crime in the UK has actually increased in the past year, according to new polling by Ipsos UK. The survey also revealed that a significant 79% of Britons view crime as a major issue in the country. When it comes to their local areas, people are a bit more hopeful, with 41% considering crime and anti-social behavior a big problem. However, 43% admit to personally worrying about becoming a victim of crime, especially among those aged 18-34 (56%) and ethnic minorities (61%). Interestingly, 62% of individuals aged 55-75 are not concerned about falling victim to crime. In order to further reduce crime, the public believes that having more police on the streets, improved parenting, and longer prison sentences with no early releases are key factors. Despite this, 67% of individuals rarely or never see uniformed police officers patrolling their local areas, even though a similar percentage believes that having more police officers present would help combat crime and anti-social behavior. The approach to reducing crime differs among Conservative and Labour voters. Conservative voters lean towards initiatives like more uniformed police presence, longer prison sentences, better parenting, improved discipline in schools, and even capital punishment for murder. On the other hand, Labour voters focus on preventative measures such as enhanced parenting, increased youth activities, greater investment in mental health services, behavior change programs, and better support for drug and alcohol addiction. Having attended this excellent conference last month, arranged by FlexMR, I wanted to share the write-up from Research Live, as I think it does a good job of summarising some important take-outs from the day... In my work with client-side insight teams, I've seen first-hand how high a priority it is for insights to be communicated with impact, if they’re going to drive real change and have commercial value. The article highlights how insight leaders are now more focused than ever on storytelling and building strong relationships internally. I've always believed that great insights should be shared in a way that inspires and provokes and facilitates actions - otherwise it's value is indeterminable. Market research and insight agencies should be helping, in this regard. It was so great to attend this years launch of the Consumer Digital Index and Essential Digital Skills project, earlier this week, hosted by Lloyds Banking Group, and wonderful that Ipsos UK can once again be part of this really important research. Some great panels and discussion and some great nuggets of data shared - not even a handful of what's in the report. Key findings for me were the: Importance of digital skills not just for participation in everyday life but for financial health Extent to which poverty is linked to digital exclusion and the need not just for digital skills but devices and data for all Need for accessible and inclusive design Importance of understanding what will engage and motivate citizens who remain offline or with lower levels of skills (devices, data and skills are not the only solution) Necessity for workplaces to embrace digital transformation to ensure productivity gains Greater awareness of the importance and benefit of digital skills and living in an online world Most importantly the need for collaborative action and coalition across organisations and government - pooling research and evidence, training, resources, ideas to ensure digital inclusion for all #consumerdigitalindex

With the upcoming long bank holiday weekend approaching, many of us will be enjoying delicious meals prepared by friends and family. But amidst the festivities, it's important to consider the potential risks of harmful bacteria lurking in our kitchens. Ipsos UK recently conducted a survey to explore Brits' habits and beliefs around food hygiene. Shockingly, 4 in 10 people admitted to using the same tea towel for multiple purposes, neglecting the advice of the Food Standards Agency. Other concerning practices include checking phones while cooking (36%) and storing leftover food in open containers in the fridge (19%). Despite the FSA warning about the dangers of slowly chilling food, 6 in 10 respondents believed it was safer to let food cool to room temperature before refrigerating it. The survey also uncovered misconceptions about freezing food, eating food off the floor, and washing chicken before cooking. Ipsos researcher Federica Curcurú highlighted the disconnect between knowledge and actions when it comes to food hygiene. While most may get away with these habits, the reality is that over 2.4 million cases of food poisoning occur in the UK each year according to the FSA. The survey serves as a reminder of the importance of debunking common myths and practicing good food hygiene. Only 31% of Britons always or frequently wash raw chicken before cooking, indicating a need for better education around food safety. #FoodHygiene #Foodies #Easter #FoodSafety

The debate around synthetic data (synthetic respondents) is intriguing. We can see limited application in some areas, such as in testing survey instruments or in replacing complex weighting models, but otherwise it's a hard sell. For example, #VansonBourne does a lot of research helping technology vendors to understand their brand position relative to their competitors and the challenges and opportunities they face. Friday podcast alert! I was lucky enough to be invited by the excellent Chris Martin and the lovely people at MRX Lab to join them on their most recent podcast... We had a super chat about the commercial challenges that both market research and insight agencies and insight teams in end-client businesses face. Lots to cover in 30mins on the pod (I won't be insulted if you listen at 1.5x!) but some of the topics we covered: 1) The emergence of a new hybrid sales and marketing model for agencies to better engage and build relationships with their clients. 2) How I'm pretty optimistic about our industry and the technological disruption that we can take advantage of. 3) How can we shift perceptions of research spend from a cost to an investment and how agencies and end-clients need to work together to win solve this challenge.
