With the course Tesseral Ai is sharing online, we plan to go into deep water seismic. Having worked for a successful offshore company and been involved with offshore seismic acquisition want to include this in the course Tesseral Ai is offering free. It is happening as more oil and gas companies are planning to drill offshore because of the lower carbon, decrease in the BEP in offshore wells to around $30 per barrel which makes it competitive with shale plays due to the use of FPSO’s or tying back to nearby wells, and shale plays decline rate is high compared to offshore wells that produce for decades. The use of subsea tiebacks to nearby existing production facilities has allowed producers to reduce both project costs and start-up times. This has been done by leveraging existing infrastructure to reduce the time for a well to come onstream. The time to bring a deepwater well onstream has been reduced to 3 years compared to BP Thunderhorse taking 9 years to come onstream. Subsea processing technologies has enabled long-distance tieback opportunities that can exceed more than 33 km for remote and marginal fields. This is covered in the attached write up. Tying back to existing infrastructure in the oilsands has also lowered its BEP from $78 per barrel to $45 per barrel. Oilsands decline rates are less than shale plays as well which makes investment into oilsands more attractive. As the TMX comes online oilsands companies have increased the number of people working the oilsands and the new phases of oil sands being developed are smaller, incremental brownfield expansions, rather than large-scale greenfield projects. They are also tying these developments into existing central processing facilities (CPFs), rather than building new CPFs. Operating costs have also fallen because of increased reliability, with less downtime and increased throughput Production in the oilsands are expected to peak with all the new pipeline capacity compared to 5 years ago. This addition pipeline capacity is coming from the Minnesota Line 3 pipeline expansion increasing its capacity from 380,000 BOPD to 760,000 BOPD in 2021 and the TMX pipeline expansion increasing capacity from approximately 300,000 BOPD to 890,000. With the increase in pipeline capacity we will see WCS differential decrease and oilsands companies will increase production to meet the demand to keep the pipelines full. Part of the increase in demand for WCS is due to sanctions on Iran and Venezuela and oil supply from Latin countries will decrease for several reasons. Oil exports from Mexico are expected to decrease by 70% between 2021 and 2023 due to political reasons. In Colombia, the lack of major conventional oil and natural gas discoveries over the last decade has left the country with meager proven reserves of 1.8 billion barrels, which is sufficient to only support oil production for another six years.

Jones, Brightskies Geoscience 💻 Topic: The Evolution of Imaging: Towards FWI reservoir attributes The last ten years has seen a radical change in the way that subsurface parameter fields have been estimated. This change has been driven and facilitated by the introduction of full waveform inversion (FWI). Originally conceived of (by Patrick Lailly and Albert Tarantola in the early 1980’s) as a method for direct estimation of elastic parameters, our industry has hitherto taken the less ambitious route of using FWI simply as a means of obtaining a better parameter model for subsequent migration. However, in the past couple of years, FWI has evolved into a means of more directly obtaining a reflectivity image (without a separate migration step) and also of delivering pre-stack elastic parameter estimates. Hence, we are progressing more towards the originally conception of FWI. What can we do to attract geophysical talent into industry? The British Geophysical Association (BGA) organised a meeting on Friday to discuss the current state of geophysics in higher education. I began the day thinking this would perhaps shed some light on what is going on to arrest the slide in UK earth science / geophysics student enrolments. I did not expect this to fire the imagination so... I ended the day in awe of the fantastic outreach work being done by University Geoscience UK , MSc Geophysics, University of Aberdeen , University of Leeds,  European Plate Observing System TCS AH Consortium (anthropogenic hazards), UCL’s GeoBus programme, the IOPSpark program, STEM Learning UK , The Ogden Trust , and the BGA. Their work is inspiring and imaginative - even nursery schools get a look in! The role of applied geophysics in the 21st Century offers a huge range of applications to help people and the environment. These include but are not limited to exploring for critical minerals, exploring and managing groundwater, monitoring hydropower and transport infrastructure, mitigating the risk of geohazards and investigating brownfield sites. Not to mention providing information for foundation design, detecting UXO, mapping buried services and archaeology. There are roles for geophysicists, earth scientists, geotechnical engineers, data analysts, historians, electrical engineers and others waiting to be filled in organisations offering these services. Industry and government need to build on the fantastic work being done by outreach professionals and academia and build a strategic alliance - working collaboratively to raise awareness and stimulate students from all walks of life to enter this exciting field. We must act quickly.

It is with a deep sense of humility and responsibility that I have accepted the position of editor-in-chief of the peer reviewed journal Interpretation. Interpretation is the premier publication for research and practice related to the interpretation of subsurface data. I assume this role following in the footsteps of true giants including Kurt Marfurt, Hongliu Zeng, Balaz Nemeth, Seva Vsevolod, and a number of other truly great individuals, and I am honored to fill their very large shoes. Interpretation is a joint publication of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG). The editor and deputy editor are appointed to three year terms with responsibility for appointing these leadership positions shared between these two organizations on a rotating basis. I was thus appointed by the SEG Board of Directors with the consent of the AAPG Executive Committee. Sumit Verma has assumed the role of deputy editor, a position that I have held for the past three years. This position is, quite frankly, a lot of work, and I wish him all the best. I managed nearly 800 peer reviews in my three years as deputy editor, and I trust that he will be just as busy. As some of you may know, I am no longer working in the oil industry, having switched two years ago to ag tech and climate sciences. However, I am still deeply committed to the belief that our understanding of the subsurface is critical to our success in the future. I hope to use my position to bring more work surrounding sustainability into Interpretation. This is important to geoscientists as well as our species and our planet. I am curious to hear new perspectives from outside of my area of expertise in #energy to see how we can help drive change together.
