“You can’t give accountability, individuals need to take it”! The CEOs/MDs in the outstanding Vivid Grey Thrive Group met up last week at Mosca Direct UK to hear from Glen Daley on Accountability. It was very enlightening and revealing. Glen shared with us the theory of the Force Field Analysis. Most of us already know of the many reasons why individuals being accountable is so positive to both them and the business… so why don’t more people grab it?! Glen explained that it the ‘Restraining Forces’ or barriers that get in the way – he says we need to focus on such things as blame culture, lack of ownership, lack of consequences, vague expectations or lack of capability/resources. Remove or change these in order to get individuals to change their mindset and take accountability. He then became a bit of a thespian to demonstrate how business leaders may have positive intent of encouraging their teams to be more accountable but individuals may read the situation and see the world through different eyes and are a little sceptical of the reasons behind their bosses motivations!! So be aware that what you communicate may not be interpreted in the way you had intended!! “You are given responsibility, but you take accountability……accountability is taking ownership of results”.

📐 We call it the Triumvirate of Accountability. In practical terms, this means that no training programme will succeed without the full investment of the participants, the training provider and the internal stakeholders (including senior managers). If they’re not all actively involved, clear on what is expected of them, and completely committed to initiating change, your programme won’t get the results you want. Its a busy week ahead at KB coaching HQ with a Wednesday Webinar (12.30 online half hour, free), June’s ‘Gather’ (our monthly walk on the fell) and a business Strategy Day facilitation at the @studiomorland for a local company to finish off the week, oh plus end of school term fetes and football tournaments! The personal calendar is crazy this time of year - I struggle to keep up with the school admin and there’s lots of other events coming up such as bands staying and graduation ceremonies (Yey! So proud) and kids sleepovers to juggle in between coaching, business events at the Studio, Art Club London trips and the odd illustration project. Oh and accounts which is today’s task. I totally switched off at the weekend as a coping mechanism. It’s like a switch - on/off - I’m either 100% immersed or 100% switched off, and it really helps when times are busy busy and juggling lots of different projects that require different sorts of attention.
