Social Care Spotlight! 📢 ... “The new president of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) has committed to “improving diversity across local authority children’s services” over the coming year.” Andy S., the newly appointed president of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS), has pledged to enhance diversity within local authority children’s services during his tenure. He emphasised the importance of a diverse workforce in understanding and meeting community needs, stating that achieving this goal requires collaboration across the public sector. Smith highlighted the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion as crucial, affirming the commitment to addressing issues of disproportionality and discrimination. “The principles of diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to all areas of our work and we are committed to highlighting, challenging and addressing issues of disproportionality, discrimination and systemic barriers that limit opportunity where they exist and we won’t stop there,” These comments follow on from interesting stats revealed below: ⬇ Latest ADCS data, as of 31 March 2023 revealed that.. 🔵 81% of DCS’s identified as white British 🔵 5% as white Irish 🔵 6% as ‘other’ white 🔵 1% as black African 🔵 1% as black Caribbean 🔵 2% as white and black Caribbean 🔵 2% as white and Asian Andy has also outlined key priorities for the upcoming year, including key and ongoing issues such as... 🔵 Addressing childhood poverty, 🔵 Enhancing social worker recruitment and retention, 🔵 Improving services for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). 🚨 New Social Work Apprenticeship in Scotland 🚨 Exciting news! A social work apprenticeship is set to launch in Scotland, offering a well needed additional route into Social Work in the Country. 📢 Key Points: 🔵 Announced by Cabinet Secretary Angela Constance, the Scottish Government is partnering with Skills Development Scotland to develop this new pathway. 🔵 Open to graduates, the apprenticeship allows candidates to work in social care while obtaining a master’s qualification, with fees covered by SAAS. 🔵 This is the first social work apprenticeship in Scotland, following the model already available in England since 2019. 🔵 It provides a crucial opportunity to strengthen and diversify the profession, especially amid the current recruitment and retention crisis. Leadership bodies, including Social Work Scotland and the Scottish Association of Social Work, have welcomed this initiative. However, both highlight the need for additional bursaries for students, similar to the support nursing and midwifery trainees receive, to make social work more accessible. The team provides advice and guidance to all people who contact Social Work England. We are a strong and supportive team who engages with internal and external stakeholders. 📌 Registration and Advice Senior Officer Key responsibilities: ✅ Ensure effective customer service is provided by the registration and advice team at all times, and to take action to maintain and improve this service. ✅ To support the Registration Operations Manager(s) in the development and training of team members including any necessary feedback, recruitment, induction and objective setting. ✅ Support the annual renewals process by improving guidance and standard responses. Maintaining a list of improvements which can be implemented for the current year (system, process, guidance and training). Closing date for applications: 6 May 2024. 📌 Registration and Advice Officer Key responsibilities: ✅ Manage a high volume and varied caseload, delivering quality assessments through effective planning, prioritisation and independent case management, by applying relevant guidance and regulatory frameworks. Enlisted below are the sequence of events for my Social Work England application. This might vary from person to person and was exactly 1.4 years ago and with major amendments and changes within Social Work England this might not be the scenario presently. This might be useful to understand the process for aspiring social work professionals who are interested to join the register. January 2023- Submitted the application by paying the scrutiny fee along with the prerequisite documents. March 2023- Allocation of a case manager for the application and requested for additional documents after pre assessment of the initial application submitted. Some of the major things which had to be rectified and was missed out for submission were 1.     Attested bank Statement 2.     Updating knowledge and skills form 3.     Passport with 4 corners visible as photo without obstruction not a scanned copy. May 2023-  Correspondence from SWE to college and employers to verify the information furnished relating to course and employment. July 2023- Amendment of USK initially submitted as per the standards of SWE. A rectified USK had to be submitted as per the professional standards of SWE. A detailed description of the major activities conducted in the USK had to be added and certain of the activities mentioned in the initial USK was not accepted as social work practice in the United Kingdom. August 2023- Verification of USK with supervisor. September 2023-  Issue of joining letter and allocation of a unique number for identification. Payment of 90 pounds for confirmation of the registration had to be done before November 2023 Applicants who are successful are requested to submit a CPD and payment of an annual membership fee to continue in the register. This has to be done every year and the assessment period starts for example from December 2024 to November 2025. "Shaunna, I want to start my application with Social Work England but I've looked on their list of overseas qualifications and mine is not on there, what do I do?" First of all don't panic, you may still be accepted. It's very likely you are one of the first people to apply with your qualification- there are new courses created every year in different institutions. If your course is not listed on Social Work England’s list of overseas qualifications, you must include a course information form or provide a letter of training and experience with your application. The supporting letter needs to outline how your education, training and experience aligns with Social Work England’s professional standards. I would advise uploading both the form and the letter to avoid any unnecessary delays. Make sure to also provide details of any placements you have completed if you have not worked since you first qualified. In this case, less is not more- provide as much information as you can so they can make an informed decision.
