What did Layers Run Club teach me about completing your self-assessment before Christmas? Nothing really, but you should probably get them both done as soon as possible. As accountants' we want them done so that January isn't a nightmare, but as a client, that doesn't bother you necessarily. So why do it sooner rather than later, what benefits are there for you? Usually, the anxiety of the return is worse than the reality, you find your supporting information for your income sources and we take care of the rest! 😀 Imagine finding out you have a couple thousand pounds more to pay in tax the week before it's due? Rather than with 2 months to go, neither is great but 2 months is more notice than a week. Imagine finding out after all this time that you were actually due a refund from HMRC. A stress-free Christmas without knowing what you have to pay by the 31st of January. If you still haven't filed by now but need to get a mortgage sorted in the next month or so, you are gonna need those tax overviews! In 2024, you should be keeping digital records, and you should be thinking about 2025 tax now. This way, if you do have a tax bill, you can actually impact the tax you'll have to pay, you can pay into a pension, bring forward an asset purchase to save tax etc. But I would say that! I'm an accountant, and my life revolves around this stuff, unlike most normal people! Why not get your return for 2023/24 done and then let someone like Layers Accountancy get you set on software that will save you more than it will cost you (in time/ sanity or both!) Also, very soon (April 2026) some people are going to have to do it digitally and report quarterly, so we've got that coming...

PSCs (persons with significant control) - what disclosures are required on the PSC Register at Companies House? Time for a blog on this! And if you think that PSCs are persons who actually have significant control - then think again. A friendly warning for any users of #xero accounting software... New pricing plans have come out which - and this has been a surprise to a lot of accountants - means that you can ONLY use the basic "Grow" package if you only have ONE person on the payroll. The moment you've got two (even if it's a husband-and-wife team) you'll need to upgrade to their "Comprehensive" package at £47pm, even if you don't need all the other features. And once you've got SIX people on the payroll, then you're going to have to stump up £59pm 🤦‍♀️ Personally, I don't think this is a great pricing model from Xero - forcing people to take loads of features when all they want is to be able to have an extra person on payroll. But what do I know... So... where's this going? If you're going to have to pay Xero an extra £14pm just to add one more person to your payroll - and you're still doing all the legwork each month - perhaps it's time to get your accountant doing your payroll for you. They'll have their own software, so you won't need to take a forced upgrade, and the net cost difference won't be much - perhaps £10 a month. With that, you'll save time doing payroll AND have the peace of mind knowing, rather than hoping, it's being done correctly. Remaining up to date is crucial in business 📈 It’s even harder when supporting a niche industry. For us, there’s two areas. 🧮 Accounting and Tax This covers accounting and tax compliance changes that clients need to be aware of. Ensuring our work aligns with technological changes is also vital so tasks continue to take you as little time as possible. 🎨 Design and Creative Industry We need to remain extremely informed about what’s happening in the industry. Whether that is that the market is turbulent, how people are finding their work, what they’re working on or even how they’re pricing their work. Without these, you can’t effectively advise on the business because you don’t truly understand it. 📚 Yesterday, it was the former - Accountex - and all of The3Key team attended. It’s an excellent opportunity to understand how others operate, collect ideas on how you may do things better (aside from the client feedback we collect), understand how new products in the market work and, more importantly, network with individuals you may benefit from. We NEVER have that January self-assessment tax return rush with our clients. Our clients returns are submitted months in advance - and are all done. We ensure we have all of the necessary information available to us early. We're on top of it. We’re proactive accountants & Finance Directors. We don’t want that stress, our team doesn’t and our clients don’t. If you’re fed up with the last minute rush, being asked for details days before the deadline, then DM us. It is not very often that I get asked 'do I need an accountant?' but for smaller businesses and start ups, the question is more likely to be 'when do I need an accountant?' The short answer is 'sooner than you realise' but there are a number of contributing factors which would indicate that a small business should be working with an accountant, as opposed to managing the company finances on their own: - If the business has an ambitious growth target or wants to grow quickly - If the finances are complex or the business is looking for external investment - If the nature of the business adds complexity to the tax landscape The right accountant will always add value and make managing your finances much easier. How will HMRC react to your involvement in the case, Salman? An oft asked and much warranted question from potential clients and accountants alike. ❓️Is it an admission of wrongdoing? ❓️Is it an admission of concern that you have something to hide? Amongst many other valid thoughts and concerns. Antony Monger and I were once referred to as the client bringing in the "heavy guns" by the HMRC officers. 😯 Well you were pursuing the client for £500k in liabilities and had rltried to railroad client into oblivion (we settled for less than £50k!) - what-do-ya expect?! 🤷🏾‍♂️ Anyhow, its none of those things. ✅️ You are entitled to have whatever representations you want/need. ✅️ HMRC's own charter says so (although I doubt many officers read that). ✅️ In actual fact - it usually demonstarte the opposite; that you are serious about dealing with the investigation and are willing to bear the costs of engaging a specialist! I'm also pretty good at explaining why the client has me invovled and building rapport with the inspector 😎 ➡️ Look the honest truth is that if I feel I shouldn't be involved in your case for whatever reason(s) - you'll hear it from me first.
