Nice snapshot of the art of the possible - the UK’s current (no / low carbon) power mix mid afternoon today. Much of the interconnector power from nuclear and / or hydro. More long duration energy storage needed to help increase the penetration of renewables into the system and further decarbonise power, recognising this is but one (and arguably easier) component of the energy system we need to urgently decarbonise.

Funding commitments have been made, but many are faltering at final investment decision. In Qatar with the successful examples of PPP in Public Sector projects, the trend is on the rise to other sectors. To all those involved in projects and sourcing in Qatar, I recommend following Project 13 and read about their Framework. It is a partnership initiative between academia, public, and private sector to address the projects and construction dilemmas. The UK legislation’s roll out/update to “Construction Playbook” and “Sourcing playbook” guidances in parallel to support those initiatives are, in my opinion, exemplary of complimenting knowledge and awareness gaps from two different ways!

Carbon capture and storage (#CCS) is set to play a major role in the UK meeting its 2050 #NetZero emissions target, so it’s fantastic to award an Agreement for Lease to Eni for the first CCS project in the UK to repurpose existing pipeline infrastructure!   This is our second Track 1 CCS project awarded and first to reuse existing infrastructure, which will reduce both cost and the environmental impact of construction.   Eni’s innovative approach will see existing pipelines and platforms being repurposed to transport and store carbon dioxide from the HyNet industrial cluster for safe and permanent storage in depleted natural gas reservoirs under the seabed of the Irish Sea.   The Government has also announced today a £22bn funding boost over 25 years for this crucial technology, launching the UK’s first carbon capture industry, creating the opportunity for thousands of jobs and billions of private investment into the sector!   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eqD_fNqT #CarbonCapture #CarbonCaptureAndStorage

📖🔍Case study: We were asked to complete detailed and bespoke #decommissioning analysis in the North Sea to support a multiple field, subsea well, decommissioning project. The analysis focused on identifying the risks associated with entering 21 historic wells, some of which were originally drilled in the 1980s. Our analysis was used to mitigate operational risk and to support significant project cost savings, totally approximately £5m in cost savings, as well as over 400 tonnes of CO2 savings. The UK government is launching a publicly owned National Energy System Operator (NESO) on October 1, 2024, to oversee the strategic planning of the nation's electricity and gas systems. NESO aims to enhance energy security, reduce long-term costs, and accelerate the transition to clean energy by 2030. It will integrate various energy infrastructures under one body, ensuring coordination for renewable projects, decarbonization. This initiative follows the acquisition of the Electricity System Operator from National Grid. Some of the key NESO works during the next couple of years will be to publish: 1. ️ ⚡ It’s time to make heat - hot! ⚡ That’s the takeaway for me from the The Association for Decentralised Energy’s #DECONF24    Lots of inspirational, insightful and thought-provoking speeches – couldn’t expect less from the event hosted by Caroline Bragg.  💡 Heat Networks could be the source of low cost, low carbon heat (Tamsin Lishman). They allow to capture and utilise energy which would otherwise be wasted (Beata Blachut).  💡 Waste heat is being produced by the industry (including data centres, sewage, the tube), and capturing it could solve a huge part of heat decarbonisation challenge for cities. To enable that on national scale - the investment is required in heat transmission infrastructure to connect the demand with the source. Thermal energy storage systems could help (Exergy3 Limited), and biomethane has a role to play too.    💡 Greg Jackson talked about going electric in a smart, decentralised way, and the need for Price signals in order to enable Smart systems. Consumer demand has a huge part to play in reducing electricity cost – provided that demand flexibility is enabled.  ❓ How do we solve a multi-faceted problem of Energy Transition, from Private sector perspective?   ✅ Talk in One Room about One Energy System (thank you - Beata Blachut)  ✅ Raise awareness about the true cost of clean electricity and heat   ✅ Find a “prettier” name than “Heat Networks” (suggestion from John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben himself)  And from what I can tell – ENGIE’s teddy bear freebie is a step towards (making my kids happier) making the image of “Heat” more appealing 😊

What is #decarbonisation ? A few weeks ago the government announced significant investment in #CCS ( carbon capture and storage) including the East Coast Cluster where Equinor actively hoping to play a role in decarbonising the UK.
