Calvin Lau and Charlotte Downs recently spoke at Design Systems London about the GOV.UK Design System team's research on the new WCAG 2.2 accessibility criteria. They explained how these criteria impact UK government services and offered guidance to help teams improve their products. Hyysalo and Johnson review user involvement methods in product and service development, highlight categorisation challenges, and propose a typology of nine approaches to better organise designer-user relationships. https://lnkd.in/eVcKQgAG #TheDesignJournal Making sense of methods and approaches to user involvement There has been a dramatic growth in the ways of involving users in various product, service, space, and systems development activities. Various categorizations, listings, and mappings have been proposed for making sense of this user-involvement landscape. The present paper introduces the main types of currently available clarificatory mappings used in design for, with, and by users, as well as the shortcomings associated with them. It then proceeds to elaborate how such mappings could be better organized in the future, stressing the importance of distinguishing between techniques, methods, methodologies, and approaches. While sensible mappings are difficult if not impossible to ever achieve regarding techniques and methods, wider approaches in how designer–user relations are organized in time and space do appear to be amenable to differentiation. We elaborate a typology of nine approach-level user-involvement configurations based on resemblance relations, and how these in turn help make sense of wider research areas.

It also illustrates the kind of people-centered, technically sound, and values-aligned information ecosystem that can be born from a shift to information integrity by design, creating an environment that is more beneficial and lucrative for all involved." Effective design decisions blend user needs and stakeholder choices. We love Matt Cooper-Wright ‘s "Delivering Design Faster" post from IDEO, which discusses common design and innovation issues within organizations, specifically the slow progress due to stakeholder involvement and indecisive decision-making. He suggests reframing situations as opportunities for making choices, offering multiple viable options rather than binary decisions. This method fosters creative thinking and careful planning, leading to better decision-making and quicker design processes. There are three areas to focus on to make faster design decisions: Choice Making ↳ Suggests various approaches, such as continuing exploration, adjusting resources, and seeking or not seeking stakeholder buy-in. Options also include halting operations or maintaining the status quo. Dark patterns have been a subject of academic and industry scrutiny for over a decade. Initial studies focused on identifying and categorizing these patterns, with Brignull's taxonomy of dark patterns being one of the most cited frameworks. His taxonomy includes categories such as "Sneak into Basket," "Roach Motel," and "Forced Continuity," each describing different manipulative tactics used in digital interfaces (Brignull, 2010). A report by Gray et al. (2018) emphasized that dark patterns are not limited to isolated cases but are prevalent across various sectors, including e-commerce, social media, and subscription services. The study further identified how these patterns exploit cognitive biases, making it difficult for users to make informed decisions. In 2020, Mathur et al. conducted a large-scale analysis of 11,000 shopping websites, revealing that over 1,800 of them employed dark patterns. This study highlighted the pervasiveness of these practices and their impact on consumer trust (Mathur et al., 2020). Recent studies have expanded on this research, focusing on the ethical implications of dark patterns. A 2022 report by Luguri and Strahilevitz demonstrated how dark patterns could lead to significant financial losses for consumers, particularly those who are less tech-savvy or vulnerable to manipulation (Luguri & Strahilevitz, 2022). The period from 2018 to 2024 saw a significant evolution in the types of dark patterns used in UI/UX design. Early dark patterns were relatively straightforward, such as hidden costs during checkout or pre-ticked boxes for subscriptions. However, as users became more aware of these tactics, designers began employing more sophisticated techniques. #Darkpattern #UIUX #IntercationDesign

⏭ 'UK working on rules for training of AI models with creative work', an interesting article on the need for greater transparency in the arts and creative industries, from the FT today: ✅ 'UK ministers are working on plans to increase transparency over how tech companies train their artificial intelligence models after the creative industries voiced concerns over work being copied' "....The government would bring forward its first attempt to create rules around the use of material such as TV programmes, books and music" ✅ 'Frazer said ministers would initially focus on ensuring greater transparency over what content was being used by AI developers to train their models' ✅ '[The UK Government] is caught between competing objectives of boosting the UK’s position as a global centre for AI, and protecting the country’s world-leading creative industries sector' "AI represented a “massive problem not just for journalism, but for the creative industries”. ✅ “There’s questions about opt in and opt out [for content to be used], remuneration. I’m working with industry on all those things.” ✅ 'Better transparency around the fast-evolving technology will mean that rights holders can more easily track intellectual property infringement.' "Executives and artists in music, film and publishing are concerned that their work is being unfairly used to train AI models under development by tech groups." ⏭ 'Last week, Sony Music called on more than 700 developers to disclose all the sources of their AI systems. In a strongly worded letter, the world’s second largest music group underlined its opt out of its music in relation to the training, ...commercialisation of AI systems.' ✅ 'The EU is already preparing to introduce similar rules under its AI act, which will require developers of general purpose AI models to publish a “sufficiently detailed” summary of content used for training and implement ...policy.' ✅ 'The UK has been slow in drawing up similar rules. Officials have admitted to a conflict between ministerial ambitions to draw fast-growing AI companies to the UK with a more benign regulatory environment...' 'The government wanted to create a “framework or policy” around transparency but noted “very complex international problems that are fast moving”. She said the UK needed to ensure it had “a very dynamic regulatory environment”.'
