What do you do at Gro: ... if its not training? Many of you will know our long history of leadership development and coaching but in the last 10 years we have focused on how to ensure professional service firms can maximise their return - either by developing strategy, building their team or ensuring they have effective systems in place for managing growth. I contributed to this People Management article. Political debate in the workplace is causing rising tension among teams, a new survey by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has found, People Management reports. It continues: According to the CMI Managers Voice Pulse Point Poll of 1,000 managers, conducted in March, nearly half (44 per cent) had witnessed disagreements over political views among colleagues and, of those, one in four (25 per cent) said the disputes had caused increased stress among colleagues and tension in team meetings or discussions (25 per cent). One in five (20 per cent) reported a deterioration in team cohesion and collaboration, while a minority also cited a negative impact on overall productivity (13 per cent) and overall work performance (13 per cent). Female managers were more likely than their male counterparts to say disagreements in political views had resulted in increased stress among colleagues (30 per cent compared to 19 per cent). In response to the findings, CMI chief executive officer Ann Francke said employers should encourage constructive debate on issues rather than shying away from them. But Sundar Pichai, Google chief executive, disagreed with this earlier this year when he told staff he did not want political debates taking place in the office. 👨‍💼 My contribution was as follows: “ultimately, employers have to be able to trust employees to behave. Where debate is becoming heated, colleagues should be reminded of their obligations to behave professionally. Arguably the Labour Government's approach to combating NIMBYism could lead to more dynamic and effective public consultations. 💡Early, comprehensive and inclusive consultations to ensure all community voices are heard, not just the opposition, ensuring balanced representation in the debate. 💡Informing communities about the benefits of developments through public consultations can help counteract resistance. 💡Listening to and proactively investigating potential impacts on local communities can lead to mitigations and different options. 💡Utilising a variety of engagement methods including digital platforms and interactive tools and face to face events to increase participation and gather diverse opinions. 💡Greater transparency in decision-making processes to build trust and demonstrate genuine consideration of community concerns. Evidence how views have influenced the decision making. 💡For highly contentious schemes think about developing strategies for managing disputes constructively to find mutually beneficial solutions. Let’s be clear, decisions cannot simply be pushed through. Processes will still have to be followed. This could be an opportunity to bring communities along with the developers and decision makers.

100 day pledge will apply to almost all HR promises with very few exceptions There are over 60 proposed employment changes, all by the 25 October 2024... Under the new Labour Government, businesses can expect significant policy changes across 11 key areas: whistleblowing, statutory bereavement leave, disciplinary and capability procedures, the right to disconnect, parental leave, carers leave, flexible working, harassment protections, sickness policies, redundancy processes, and tips, which will notably impact the hospitality industry. Employment contracts will undergo changes, giving self-employed individuals and freelancers the right to a contract. Zero-hour contracts will likely face restrictions, potentially affecting workforce flexibility in certain sectors. The proposal to eliminate the two-year rule will make probationary periods a critical focus for businesses, as many currently struggle with effective implementation. This change aims to ensure fairer treatment from day one of employment. A review of the National Minimum Wage, as highlighted in the Chancellor's recent speech, poses challenges for small businesses already strained by substantial wage increases. Adjustments to wage structures will be necessary to comply with new regulations. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is anticipated to increase and cover lower earners, possibly becoming effective from the first day of sickness. This expansion could lead to higher costs for employers, necessitating a review of existing sick leave policies. Enhanced employee rights will include day-one protection against unfair dismissal claims and increased protections for pregnant workers, extending up to six months post-return from leave. Businesses will need to strengthen their dismissal and maternity policies to comply. Labour is also examining TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations), fire and rehire practices, and union regulations, potentially increasing the complexity of managing workforce changes and union interactions. While there is no set implementation date for these changes, it’s crucial for businesses, especially small enterprises, to prepare by refining their processes and ensuring robust people management strategies. These adjustments will help mitigate the impact and ensure compliance with the upcoming legislative landscape.
