✔️ UK Set To Launch New Crypto Staking And Stablecoin Legislation By July, Economic Secretary Bim Afolami Says 💼 The UK is making bold moves in the world of cryptocurrency regulation, with plans to introduce new legislation for crypto staking and stablecoins by July, according to Economic Secretary Bim Afolami. 🔗 Speaking at the Innovate Finance Global Summit, Afolami emphasized the government's commitment to bringing crypto activities under regulatory oversight. This includes exchanges and custodial services, which will fall within the regulatory perimeter for the first time. ⭐️ The announcement follows the UK government's release of stablecoin regulation plans last October, aimed at safeguarding customers and addressing potential risks to financial stability. 📌 However, political dynamics could play a role in shaping the future of crypto regulation. With an election on the horizon, the Conservative-led government's long-term plans may face challenges from a Labour Party that currently holds a strong lead in polls. 🔔 Despite potential political headwinds, Chancellor Rishi Sunak's vision of positioning the UK as a crypto hub remains steadfast. The government's determination to act swiftly on stablecoin legislation was previously highlighted by Afolami. ▶️ The UK has been proactive in its approach to crypto regulation, passing the Financial Services and Markets Bill last year. The Payment Service Regulator has made it clear that stablecoin payment systems can be subject to oversight. 🌐 Across the pond, US lawmakers are also eyeing stablecoin legislation. Representatives Waters and McHenry are leading efforts to address concerns around these digital assets, potentially seeking bipartisan support by attaching them to unrelated bills.

Crypto Roadmap - crypto regulatory regime goes live in 2026 Two important updates on the next steps for UK crypto regulation have been published: Tulip Siddiq MP has set out the government's approach to cryptoasset regulation in a keynote address at the 'Tokenisation Summit: UK government's approach to tokenisation and regulation' where she also discussed initiatives including the Digital Securities Sandbox and the issuance of a digital gilt instrument (DIGIT) announced in the Mansion House speech on 14 November 2024 (see our blog post on Mansion House here). The FCA has published a blog post on how stakeholder roundtables have helped shape its approach to regulating certain areas of crypto, and an indicative roadmap of key dates for the development and introduction of the UK’s crypto regime. The FCA has also published a research report on consumer attitudes and behaviours towards crypto. Solutions such as cheqd build on a Public Blockchain layer which acts as an ordering and archiving infrastructure layer via W3C #DID Decentralised Identifier methods [did:cheqd] and #VC Verifiable Credentials, amongst other organisations like Decentralized Identity Foundation, Trust Over IP Foundation, OpenID Foundation and the likes. Identity, their regulations like #eIDAS2 and financial market infrastructure are all subject to the same necessity to create an increased more efficient, better access and reduced cost to operating - all to mitigate risk be that AML/CTF or the extremely poor management of private institutions leaking your data, every single day - with no right to be forgotten. Permissionless Ethereum networks are suffering from validators using MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) bots to front-run user transactions, leading to financial losses or at least negative impacts on users’ trades. Recently, in the third consultation paper on MiCA, ESMA has clearly declared this behavior as market abuse (page 10, item 19). Market participants will be required to monitor and report MEV instances, adding extra operational burdens to honest actors. At SWIAT, we use a permissioned Ethereum network with a reputable set of validators operating within a clear governance framework. Additionally, a network coordinator monitors and enforces the governance terms. This relieves regulated entities from the burden and simplifies the risk assessment of the infrastructure, which is crucial for scaling blockchain use cases in the regulated environment.
