Despite global economic challenges, recent evidence shows companies can successfully scale in Africa and achieve significant exits. TLcom Capital LLP, a VC firm, has almost doubled its previous round of funding to $154 million, attracting investment from the US and Europe. This further demonstrates resilience in the African tech market, with VC firms raising over $655 million for Africa's tech industry since November. Key African markets such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt significantly benefit from this trend. SOUTH AFRICA’S VC SECTOR ON POSITIVE TRAJECTORY AND WHAT THIS MEANS South Africa’s 2023 startup ecosystem concluded on a high note, as the local venture capital (VC) sector defied the global downward trend in annual deals since 2020. The SAVCA Venture Capital Industry Survey 2024 recently revealed that total capital flow to startups exceeded R3 billion ($164 million) for the first time, demonstrating the sector’s remarkable resilience and potential. The survey, launched by SAVCA, highlighted the significant increase in capital flow, with R10.73 billion ($586 million) invested across 1,106 active deals since the survey’s inception in 2010. While the number of deals slightly decreased in 2023 (184 deals compared to 195 in 2022), the activity remained higher than pre-Covid levels. Speaking at the Private Equity Africa Awards in London, where the firm received special recognition for its TransCentury PLC investment, Kuramo Co-CEO Shaka Kariuki expressed optimism about the sector's growth potential as global economic pressures ease, with inflation expected to decline from 7.1% in 2023 to 4.6% by 2025-26, driven by tighter monetary policies and improved supply chains. As a pioneering fund-of-funds for sub-Saharan Africa, Kuramo has catalyzed nearly $3.5 billion in investments over the past 15 years, maintaining direct and indirect investments in 200 companies across 30 African countries.  The firm's impact was further recognized at the PEA Awards, receiving the Fund of Funds Investor Award for its $150 million investment in the 2X Ignite Africa Investment Facility. For the first time in the history of Southern African Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (SAVCA)’s VC Industry Survey, South African startups raised over R3 billion, more than doubling previous funding raised in a single year. Encouragingly, 2023 also saw a hike in corporates investing alongside early-stage fund managers. While deal volume has remained stable, investments are increasingly supporting portfolio companies with follow-on investments. I think that Jo and her team have done a fantastic piece of work with the survey and their willingness to coach and mentor the new generation of Turnaround professionals. My hope with the outcomes of the survey is that Boards and C Suites out there take cognizance of the findings. For businesses to understand their is a benefit to admitting you need help ...the earlier that this is the better chance there is of success At the PIC the Tova team is very fortunate that we have an excellent set of multidisciplinary resources available to us..and we bring them in at an the early stage of assessing distressed assets..this enables us to put up holistic solutions. Our Turnaround and Value Add (Tova) team is lead by myself supported by two Turnaround Associate Fund Principals supported by Turnaround Associates..then we bring in resources from our Research department to assist with Industry knowledge..ESG to ensure we cover this area, Risk to ensure all risks are identified and mitigated...Legal to ensure we follow all legal processes..then for really specialized work we use experts from out Specialist Tova panel..this approach has worked extremely well...however our biggest hurdle is early detection..the management's reluctance to admit they have a problem..we are working with industry experts to develop an early warning indicator approach..we are sure this will be a game changer. Lastly we as an industry need to work closer together..this will ensure that we have the brightest minds sitting together and building an industry which will make an impact on the lives of all South Africans.
