Is Yellow the colour of Ambidexterity? Today the DHSC launched its conversation on the future of the NHS (https://lnkd.in/eqBQRJic) . It's a super important step and an opportunity for us all to engage in shaping the future of the NHS. It also happens to be very yellow and bold (which I rather like). I have high hopes for the 10 year plan that will come from this consultation, and top of my list is fixing the NHS's approach to innovation and continuous improvement. Simultaneously. I'd refer to this as "Organisational Ambidexterity". Let's face it... many organisations talk the language of agility. Scrum this. Innovative that. Let's run a pilot. Radically disrupt the other. Step change productivity. Use AI to re-imagine this process etc... However, organisations have often implemented the management structures of caution. Avoid failure. Avoid negative publicity. Manage budgets down even at the expense of common sense or outcomes. This does not lead to sustainable outcomes. Not for finance directors, and certainly not for patients. We need systems which can innovate now and also create a sustainable tomorrow. This is hard, and I'm not trying to trivialise it, so we need to start recognising this tension and taking steps to address it. In their excellent article on "The five trademarks of agile organisations", Mckinsey sets out their key features of successful and agile organisations. For me there are two stand out concepts here: Firstly, a "North Star" which establishes a shared mission for the organisation, analagous to the Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) which Jim Collins sets out so clearly in "BE 2.0". This goes beyond having a strategy to having a mission which all of your staff believe in. It is not sufficient to simply write your strategy, you need to provide the underlying principles which necessitate that strategy. Secondly, the article recognises that distruptive technology and entrepreneurial drive will be key to success. Joseph Schumpeter said as much in the 1940s. In today's public sector this might translate to a redefinition of an organisation's technological and financial risk appetite (without compromising safety of course) and its ability to embrace Generative AI (as the major technological disruption for a century). So, I'm really optimistic about the future of the NHS and welcome the government's consultation. What is the variation in digital capabilities in NHS hospitals? We can see there’s a large spread this makes spreading tech a challenge & leads to variation for patients. All indices around the number of supply issues are heading downwards for the first time since summer 2023. The reductions aren’t huge, but it will be interesting to see if this improvement is kept up in June. #NHS #SupplyIssues
