#TransHistoryWeek has begun in the UK. The importance of marking such a week especially in a time like now where we face more and more destruction and isolation of queer communities, specifically those most vulnerable in the system we exist in - that tend to be global majority trans individuals - should not be understated. I mark it by being openly and authentically as myself as I can be, which is a privelege I have, but also something I have fought for within myself and alongside companions and the communities I live and work within for many years and through many obstacles. I mark it by trying to learn and understand nature, and mine and others place in the natural world, and doing so whilst being myself. I love to write, I love to tell stories, I love to break down queer theory, I love to educate and facilitate, to guide and to learn, I love to feel deeply my desi and South asian roots, feel my muslim heritage, my non binary identity, and my transness fully. It is with this love and fight that I mark a week that I live every day, the anniversary of which stands on the day Nazi soldiers raided the worlds first trans clinic, and set the foundations of trans healthcare - and ALL other healthcare - from a western societal point of view (the prominent ruling power then and now and thus the system that had and has the most access to services that will help vulnerable individuals within it) back by so long and so drastically we still haven't climbed as high. I cannot do the work I do in the fullness that it is, or the different worlds it overlaps, without delving into and being queer and trans in whatever that means to me. We are ALL affected by what happens to the communities most directly affected. On Friday I will be performing poetry alongside some amazing artists at the Common Press Bookshop in London to mark the week, come along if you wish. “What are you doing for Black History Month?” For starters, being Black. So same ol’ sh*t really! People expect these elaborate celebrations for BHM. But that’s all unnecessary in my view. Because what are we really celebrating? DEI being viewed as a money waster DEI teams being made redundant DEI being labelled as harmful Black people are more or less being CANCELLED. There is nothing to celebrate, respectfully. Apparently, this year’s theme is #reclaimingnarratives Newsflash… A history lesson is not reclaiming narratives FREE panel talks is not reclaiming narratives Food stands in the office is NOT reclaiming narratives You know what IS reclaiming narratives? Equitable access to opportunities for the community. Quantifying impact on how many people helped. Celebrating the present wins. Ultimately creating history for the future 🫡 This is what I am working on ALL YEAR ROUND. Through my agency Beyond Education (BE)   Long story short, BHM is just another day for me. So, it’s a bit of a of DIY holiday. One where the whole family’s getting involved. And in light of recent events, thinking a lot about my daughters, and about the intelligent and whole black women I hope they grow up in to. Its v helpful that they see people who look like them in the workplace; people in positions of responsibility. Not least because it’s a signal that a company values and welcomes who they are and what they bring. So, here’s a shout out to just a few black female people leaders in our talent/hr team at #Netflix who I have the utmost respect for, and I’m so glad to see blazing the trail for those coming behind: Marcella C. Nurse, Ed.M. is nothing short of a very special leader and colleague. Side note, it must be said that her emails are legendary and second to none. I’ve never looked forward to reading an email as I much as I do hers. Honestly they’re quite the experience. But more than this she brings much thought, grace and a strategic muscle to our work as a global team. Lorna Mattis. leads with wisdom and intelligence. Speak to anyone in our team, and they’ll describe Lorna as an inspiration. Love working with this star of a colleague. We are so fortunate to have this gem. Melissa B. I don’t actually have words for this last colleague. Melissa sees things I often don’t see. She leads with courage and knows how to get stuff done. She’s one of the most encouraging people I know. As Glenn Close so eloquently put it: “What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation”. Monday marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, an initiative founded by the Mental Health Foundation with an aim of tackling stigma and helping people understand and prioritise their and others’ mental health. It has since become an important fixture in the awareness calendar and is vital for increasing public understanding of mental health. As a company, Global Legal Group is committed to fostering and upholding an environment that promotes and actively supports the mental health of our people. Be this through our trained mental health advocates, our welfare officers and our EAP, or by acknowledging important initiatives like Mental Health Awareness Week, we strive to keep the conversation going. Next week, we are aiming to shine a light on mental health by encouraging all those who would like to, to step away from their desks to take part in a well-being walk (in honour of this year’s theme of “Movement”!) during which time we can connect, switch off and enjoy some fresh air together; we will also be hearing from one of our mental health advocates who has kindly and courageously expressed their willingness to speak about their mental health journey to personalise the conversation, provide insights into seeking help, and to reduce the stigma around mental health. Last week I caught up with Campaign UK to discuss the growing importance of wellbeing at work. Our team dedicate a significant chunk of their week to us (that's 36.5 hours for FT staff), and we are committed to supporting them when they are facing mental health challenges. My colleague's wellbeing is paramount, it's also just good business sense, forming an integral part of our decision-making process as a business. Team members who feel supported and have the tools to be authentic in turn foster a rewarding work environment, build our culture and deliver stronger performance for our clients. This year's Mental Health Awareness theme is Movement, here are just a few ways we embrace this as a team: 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 We step away from relationships that leave us feeling deflated, log off on time to see our loved ones or use dedicated wellness hours get some exercise, and never take on more work than we can manage, even if that means turning work away. 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 We provide a tool kit for positive mental health outcomes, this includes weekly wellness hours, onsite Mental Health First Aiders and Vitality Health Insurance, creating dedicated time for taking care of ourselves helps us keep on track. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 We are constantly changing with the evolving landscape, as we continue to educate ourselves on how to show up for others and be good allys. ⁉ When do inclusive processes stop being inclusive ⁉ For example, even though I am openly #neurodiverse, in one organisation I was told I couldn’t be part of a diverse recruitment panel because I didn’t look different. Unfortunately, this is one of many examples I’ve experienced or heard about. ❓ So, what are some solutions or mitigations to this issue❓ 🔸 Awareness of the problem is crucial. 🔸 Next is identifying where and how it might (or already does) occur. 🔸 The most effective solution is speaking to Neurodiversity Together to explore a range of initiatives that will best suit your organisation, situation, and people. As the political discourse and pushback against DEI continues, so does the work within organisations to ensure businesses are diverse, equitable and inclusive. DEI work is still being done, just quieter... Argues the Financial Times in the US. Whatever the political leaning of the leaders within the business, many recognise the need to stay competitive and be an employer of choice. And this means continuing efforts to attract and keep the best talent by being as diverse and inclusive as possible. Is this the same for us in the UK? As Suella and Kemi continue to push their 'anti-woke' agenda, are UK based businesses still investing in DEI work? From my personal experience I would say yes, in general. I think. But I am very aware that may be just within my area and theme of work. And for all the progressive companies embracing true flexible working, there are some forcing employees back to the office. And for all the companies that kept their promises of 2020, there are some that haven't gone beyond the black square. What do you think?
