Happily, misinformation like that in this article from Marketplace by APM are extremely rare now. Here's why: 13 peer reviewed papers, 7 sustainability magazines support Bitcoin's ability to stabilize grids, accelerate the green transition, obviate gas peaker plants, and grow the network without growing emissions. The energy flexible nature of Bitcoin's energy consumption has been found to be critical to building out grids with a higher concentration of renewables. The assumptions that lead to early commentators criticising Bitcoin's environmental impact have been quadruply debunked in peer reviewed journals. Bitcoin's sustainable energy use is 56.7%, the highest of any industry. In light of this, almost all mainstream media outlets that once criticised Bitcoin environmental track-record have either stopped, or in the case of Forbes, The Street, FT, Bloomberg, Forkast, The Independent have reversed their position. Marketplace by APM, you are either ignoring the research and the data, or you are unaware of it. Either way, it's a bad look. Do better!

💡 KfW issues another digital bond 💡 of €100M - in addition - to the €4B digital bond - RWA tokenization evolving 👏 🚀 and a definitions headache! What do you need to know? 1️⃣ KfW has in the last week issued two blockchain based bonds. 2️⃣ On July 3 KfW issued a €100M ($108M) bond on the Polygon blockchain, value dated 4 July with a 3.125% coupon and 18 month maturity. Union Investment was the anchor/bookrunner, but KfW described investor demand for the AAA rated bond as ‘heavy’. I believe the confusion is arising over the press releases and the term "Kryptowertpapier" which already had a lot of splaining to do. But if you have a view jump on in in the comments 👇 5️⃣ I spend a lot of time thinking about definitions, so maybe a confirmation bias - but I think the confusion is, aside from two closely announced deals, about Zentralregisterwertpapier vs Kryptowertpapier: 💡 The €4B bond is on D7, which is a hybrid platform underpinned by DAML/Canton (more on this tomorrow) with a centralized registry and therefore is a Zentralregisterwertpapier or central register security. 💡 The €100M bond is on Polygon, an Ethereum Layer 2, but inevitably a decentralized registry and therefore "Kryptowertpapier" or crypto security, which is a specific term under the German Electronic Securities Act (eWpG) and requires registration with BaFin under the eWpG. 💡 Where some of the confusion (I think, I don't know) comes from is the use of language - krypto - as a stem is otherwise used only in German legalese to refer to crypto, but wertpapier means security and in this context Kryptowertpapier only means this very specific type of security that has to be registered with BaFin. But this mix of terms Kryptowertpapier has grown its own lore and confusion. There's nothing quite like digital assets for misunderstandings. NEWS: Graphcore employees have had the value of their shares wiped, as a “conditional agreement” to sell the company has been reached, sources tell Sifted. One former employee says that CEO and founder Nigel Toon told staff on a team call that Japanese investor SoftBank is the acquirer, confirming previous reporting by The Telegraph newspaper. Four former employees, holding either stock options or restricted stock units (RSUs), tell Sifted they’ve been informed that their shares are now worthless. This is because the expected sale price for the company — reported to be around $500m — equates to less the total amount invested in the company to date (more than $600m), one source explains. BRICS Makes Huge Announcement About Launching New Currency! BRICS is working on the formation of a new currency in the global markets to challenge the US dollar’s supremacy. The alliance aims to uproot the US dollar from the world’s reserve and replace it with the new BRICS currency. The battle to dominate the financial sector kick-started after the White House pressed sanctions on Russia and other developing countries. Nations around the world fear their economies will be affected by sanctions and now want to end dependency on the US dollar. A handful of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America are considering cutting ties with the US dollar. South African Ambassador to China Siyabonga Cyprian Cwele confirmed in an interview that the BRICS currency is progressing. “The BRICS are advancing the progress of its common currency,” he said to Global Times. He added that the alliance is “actively promoting the use of local currencies from member states to reduce the risks of solely relying on the US dollar”. Therefore, even before the launch of the new BRICS currency, the bloc is promoting local currencies of its members to halt the prospects of the US dollar. The Ambassador revealed that a task force of member states formed by the financial ministers will meet in May to discuss the currency. Cwele stressed that local currencies will be traded heavily among member nations until the BRICS currency is launched. More details about the soon-to-be-released BRICS currency could be revealed in the upcoming summit. The 16th BRICS summit is scheduled to take place in October 2024 in the Kazan region of Russia.
