How many times have you heard things like, "YOU have ADHD? Really?!? Hmm..." 🤔 This is something somebody said to me recently when I told them that I was diagnosed with ADHD. Although they didn't mean to be unkind, it felt like it really invalidated what I'd been going through for years, and the whole journey I've been on. 😕 I know it's the sort of reaction lots of people with ADHD get, and it's something I often get asked to help clients work through, whether it's with friends, family or work colleagues. With my clients, we look at ways to talk about their ADHD, and how to explain to others how it shows up for them, as negative judgements and sweeping statements about neurodivergence can feel hurtful and upsetting, especially at a time when we need understanding and support from others the most. All too often, as soon as you tell people you have ADHD they may say things like: 💬 "Yes but everybody's a bit like that." 💬 "It's just a trend." 💬 Or they put it down in a way which invalidates what you're saying. "Alan, how do you or your company try to be more environmentally responsible?" I'm much less commonly a shoestring solo-preneur and independent writer. Environmental responsibility becomes that much more personal, as it weaves into our family behaviour day and night, living and working and learning and training from home. Actual recycling of plastic and paper and metal and glass, at least rinsed clean, as per national initiative, for what little it's still worth, in an island state heavily into plastic usage and packaging on everything, everywhere - including mobile phones. Much more critically, reduce material possessions and consequently cluster and wastage, by having a minimalist public flat home. This already completed a change in not shopping for the sake of brands and trends and festives. Reduce blatant transportation usage, including work and schooling commutes to external sites. Work from home, keep down power and water usage despite heat waves and essential airconditioning and online computer needs and activity, however difficult it is, despite perpetual financial hardships. Lacking money also builds the good habit of not polluting, spending, and hyper-consuming via overseas travel, especially by frequent flying. Build emotional, social, spiritual awareness, by replacing the rabid need for physical infections and more vulnerable in-person bodily contact, by better grasping fellow humans, transcending education, beliefs, traditions, and invisible constraints. #GreenerTogether #LinkedInNewsAsia

I was delighted to share '3 top tips for befriending your inner critic' for the Thresholds Ltd blog recently. So many of us are held back by our own negative inner voice, which often can sound like: > I’m not someone who... > I will never be able to... > Who do you even think you are... > You’ll never succeed so you may as well give up > You’re not as good as x, y, z.. "What's in a name?" Shakespeare asked. When it comes to the freelance industry, it turns out - quite a lot! The use of labels in our field is as diverse as the work we do, and it's fascinating how much weight these words carry. We often see a preference for "consultant" over "freelancer" due to its perceived professionalism. However, even "consultant" might carry negative connotations in some contexts, reminding us that no term is universally perfect. The evolution of terminology in our industry is constant, reflecting its dynamic nature. Take "gig worker," for instance. While it's gained popularity, it often carries associations that can undermine the value of skilled independent professionals, leading many of us to actively avoid it. On the flip side, we've seen the rise of "fractional," especially for executive-level roles. But is it truly different from freelancing, or just clever repackaging? The jury's still out, but it's certainly gaining traction. What's particularly intriguing is how client preferences vary. Some love "borrowed strategy," others prefer "center of excellence." This diversity highlights the importance of flexibility in our terminology for successful client relationships. It's a moving target too - what's acceptable today might be outdated tomorrow. "Consulting," for example, might not carry the same weight in a few years. At the end of the day, regardless of the term, what matters most is the core truth of what we do: self-employment and a digital-first approach. The value we provide and the outcomes we deliver far outweigh what we call ourselves. My advice? Be flexible. Let clients use whatever term they're comfortable with, and focus on communicating your value and delivering results. For independent professionals, this serves as a reminder that our ability to adapt goes beyond just our work - it extends to how we present ourselves in different contexts. Question: what is hypnotherapy? I get asked this A LOT. If like most people the only exposure you have had is from seeing it on TV, your opinion will be based on that information. Generally you will have witnessed people making themselves look silly - ie clucking like a chicken or eating an onion as if it’s an apple. This is hypnosis. It’s designed for entertainment. And it works. People laugh. If this is the only exposure you have had to hypnosis you will associate this with hypnotherapy. They are completely different. Hypnotherapy still involves going into hypnosis. The difference is that once you are in a trance like state, as a therapist, I then provide therapy rather than making you look silly. Hypnosis is a relaxed state of heightened awareness. You are not awake, not asleep, just at that lovely floaty in between stage. You are always in control. You can still cough, scratch, sneeze and talk. You will only take on suggestions you are comfortable with. It is THE MOST RELAXED you will ever feel. We have 2 parts to our mind. Conscious (logical/thinkong/rational) = 10% Subconscious (feelings/emotions/memories) = 90% When we go into hypnosis we give our thinking mind a rest. We open up the subconscious mind and then as a therapist I can communicate with the part of your mind that stores your feelings, emotions and memories THIS IS WHY IT WORKS! This is why a year ago I couldn’t teach yoga in front of a room filled with people and now I travel around the country delivering workshops. This is why a year ago I couldn’t recall positive memories of my dad and now I can remember happy childhood memories. I’ve helped people with: 💫 extreme anxiety 💫 alcohol addiction 💫 weight loss 💫 sleep 💫 confidence 💫 smoking 💫 stress 💫 fears and phobias And much much more. Don’t suffer in silence. Struggling to create clients? This might be why... You're quietly quitting and so are your potential clients. In coaching, "quiet quitting" refers to when potential clients express initial interest, inquire about services, or even join introductory calls but ultimately disengage without committing or communicating why. They might seem excited initially, but then "disappear" or fail to follow through, leaving coaches in a loop of hopeful waiting without clear feedback. The term "quiet quitting" originated in corporate circles to describe employees who meet only the bare minimum requirements of their job without fully engaging or putting in extra effort. Instead of formally quitting, they "quietly" stop going above and beyond, which often stems from burnout, dissatisfaction, or disengagement. For coaches, the phenomenon highlights a growing trend: Clients are increasingly selective and seek genuine, personalized experiences. If they sense that a coach’s approach is generic or overly transactional, they may “quiet quit” the process—showing interest at first but ultimately fading out if they don’t feel a strong, authentic connection. The real problem is this. You may "Quiet quit" as a form of self sabotage. Instead of getting committed you seek out free value and come to believe you don't need help. Your clients are doing the same thing. Until you see that, they won't either and hence the vicious cycle perpetuates. Connect with a coach that can help you and then get committed to your game. If it's not me that is ok. Find the right coach for you! Small hinges swing big doors. Start swinging. Cheers to you winning your game and building authentic relationships that last.

Nature’s Blueprint for me is about re-evaluating, re-setting, seeing things differently. When I set off down the M6 to the Cotswolds, to Annie Lee ‘s Natures Blueprint launch last September I had no idea what I was looking for. What I found was connection and that I belong - to a community, to this planet - and that we thrive only when nature does. It’s the simplest thing. Or is it? Because I consider myself pretty connected with the natural world, and yet my years of burnout and mental health issues were ones where I was disconnected. But I looked the opposite. For instance, I grew my own veg and fruit and tended my garden, but it felt like a burden not a joy, another job to do, a ‘should do’. But after the day, I saw things differently. It gave me the time, space and support to re-look at my place in this world, to feel what I can give back, and what I am given.  So what was the greatest change for me? I now take joy and pride in growing my own food with nature. Simple? Yes, one simple shift. One seed planted. But it germinated and other things have changed over the past 8 months. I see so much now through a different lens. I re-examined my values and found that  wildness, love, making a difference, depth and creativity are all deeply important to me. And now I take my decisions using these values - how can I do things more ‘wildly’? So now I allow and don’t stress about my messy garden, I grow flowers for bees and birds not form and order. I take joy in eating wild garlic and home-grown broccoli (when the pigeons haven’t eaten it). Your shift will be different, but it will start small. And our passion to help everyone do the same, led to me working with the fabulous Zaidha Roscoe and Lucy Williamson to bring Nature’s Blueprint north to Leighton Hall Lancashire, for our Spring event on 31st May. This week my posts will all be about Trust and how it relates to ADHD. Trust is soemthing I discuss with mentoring clients lots. Whether it's them not trusting others orfeeling they aren't trusted. It affects all relationships from personal to work life and is often very confusing. The posts are intended to offer starting points for you to discover more. So, here's Mondays Trust topic. The trust trap in ADHD. Trust is a fundamental aspect of human relationships, but for those of us with ADHD, it can be a particularly complex issue. We often find ourselves caught in a "trust trap," where we oscillate between placing too much trust in others and being overly cynical. This duality can stem from our unique neurological wiring, which influences how we perceive and respond to social cues and risks. Too much trust can lead to problems such as vulnerability to manipulation or disappointment when others don't meet our expectations. Our impulsive nature might make us quick to believe and invest in people without adequate scrutiny, leaving us exposed to potential harm. On the other hand, being overly cynical can isolate us and prevent us from forming meaningful connections. This cynicism often arises from past experiences where trust was broken, leading to a defensive stance to protect ourselves from further hurt. Understanding and managing these trust issues is crucial for our relationships and overall mental well-being. Recognising the patterns in our trust behaviours can help us find a more balanced approach. For example, we can learn to set boundaries and take time to evaluate relationships before investing too deeply. So what? Navigating the trust trap requires self-awareness and a proactive approach to building and maintaining trust. By acknowledging our tendencies and implementing strategies to moderate them, we can foster healthier and more stable relationships. Was there anything else you were hoping to try? I really don't like the term 'bucket list' and especially don't like it when thinking about intimacy because then I have to think of edgy strange things that I'm not sure I would enjoy but that maybe I should entertain because then it would make me seem cooler. When I recently interviewed a lot of women (and hey, by popular demand, I've opened the interviews back up again - you can book here) I asked them what sensual experiences they were looking forward to and the answers were so simple and sweet. Was there anything else you were hoping to taste in this lifetime? It doesn't have to involve dungeons, costumes, multiple partners or even sex. It doesn't have to involve ropes, expensive toys or your butt. Some of the pleasures I heard anticipation for were: Holding hands with someone empathetic.  Feeling deeply connected to my body and intuition. Bringing intimacy into making a family. Softness, slowness, tender exploration. Feeling good about my body. Lingering in the afterglow. I want to understand my body better. I want to fully embrace pleasure, I want to invite it in. I want a spa day! Mystical, healing, deep connection. It's a proper challenge for anyone to #study while holding down a job, looking after clients, not to mention being present with the family at home. That doesn't make it not doable. Helping reactive, fearful, and anxious dogs is more than just training - 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. I’ve worked with countless dogs who struggle with anxiety or reactivity, and each one requires a personalised approach to help them feel safe and confident again!🐶 As a specialist in working with reactive, fearful, and anxious dogs, I’ve learned that each dog’s journey is unique. My dog, Bertie, taught me this first-hand. Bertie's reactivity opened my eyes to how special these dogs truly are, and how much patience and understanding they need. I quickly realised that reactive dogs aren’t just “𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵” - they're communicating their fears, anxieties, and discomfort in the only way they know how 😢 Through Bertie, I learned that reactive dogs need tailored strategies, consistent positive reinforcement, and, most importantly, time to build confidence. Now, I’m passionate about helping other owners navigate similar challenges with their dogs! The other day I wrote about organisation. I'm a nonfiction book coach, right? I help people dig deep to find what their book is about, why they want to write it, why them per sé, and then articulate the journey they want to bring their reader along. You can't do that all 'willy nilly'. Your brain might operate in a 'willy nilly' way (yay for your uniquely responsive synapses!) but if you don't spend time reflecting on your concept, you might produce a book with gaps in it and that people don't find interesting or compelling enough to pick up, let alone read from cover to cover. And so - managing my clients, making sure they are staying accountable, and ensuring that they have everything they need and that we have meetings with the attendant zoom links on time, conversations about their ideas, file protocols are what I do ... but that's not what I'm mean when I talk about organisation. Rather: do you act in accordance with some larger complete vision of yourself/your book goal/your tools/your capacity to learn? If there are incongruences, there is dissonance. And while confusion and noise are great signalers, that's all they are. You cannot create coherent work from a place of disorientation. What do you learn from confusion? That it is time to explore. Find out where you are. Find a way through/over/out/around in case you are lost. And if you are lost or confused, that is okay! Once on the other side, make/do the thing you identified that you wanted, and do just that. Not to please your parents/school teachers, to prove you have made it, to fill a gap of not-enoughness you haven't admitted to yourself, to 'show them'. When there is an ample chasm between you and other people, you will not feel a sense of honest purpose. You will feel a resistance. But you can't avoid the messy middle. We all know this. Intuitively, from experience. Please don't give up, friend. (Unless your nervous system happens to have been jiggled a bit and your response is going to be 'I cannot continue on today'. Because even with my best intentions I am a human just like you and can't possibly know where you are in your first-person lived experience). I'm nutting through my own book and it's unwieldy, wriggling between my hamfists and trying to escape! Gah! But today I believe in it, and I will stay true to it and keep my compass tracked on it. My being feels like it can do it. Last week and the weeks before? Not so much. I was not writing because I was acting on ideas about being a great teacher/parent/admin-extraordinnaire/domestic engineer. When I am congruent with my self image that I am a writer ... that's when I write and it comes forth and doesn't feel like a forced assignment set by a strict teacher for a voiceless school girl. And yet it happens when it happens. And when it happens and you feel you need someone to come along with you on your adventure, you can invite me and I'd be honoured to grab my rucksack (or papier-mâché fish) and join you!
