What makes innovations work in Scotland? Impact, vision, community & ecosystem. Yesterday at the #makeyourinnovationswork podcast, I hosted Evelyn McDonald, CEO of the Scottish EDGE and a person of enormous energy who ignites the ideas of others. Key insight on how to nurture ideas within ecosystems, how social enterprises can fundraise for the sake of innovations and what makes Scotland a powerful growth spo with the UK. Social Entrepreneurship as a business model to innovate by design.  "I have to keep innovating as you do in any business because you need to keep innovating to keep your supporters engaged, to keep your stakeholders engaged, to keep people you know continuing to pay you to do what you do," says Evelen. She and her Team regularly walk in entrepreneurs' shoes when you need to adjust to the market on a regular basis and need to find a problem your customers willingly pay for. Innovate as you go. Since Scottish EDGE was launched more than 10 years ago, they have reinvented fundraising methods to keep their funding fund. Though it is the biggest business competition in the UK, crises and markets happen. Alumni pledges (1% of what they personally make on exit back to Scottish Edge), high net Scottish entrepreneurs support, sponsorship, etc., are used to secure Scottish EDGE work. Powerful community of alumni. One of the distinguishing features of the Scottish EDGE is that they support young and inexperienced entrepreneurs with 15000£ each per round. Once a part of Young EDGE, Amiqus has become the UK's leading compliance and onboarding platform, which is recommended for use by the UK government and is called "Fantastic Future Fifty 2024" by Tech Nation. It started from a spark. Running a business may be a lonely place to be. Though Teams, mentors, and partners are critical to demonstrating that your ideas mean something to others, the alumni community helps on the journey itself with information, advice, a network, and support. People are rushing from other countries to return to where their business came from. Impact matters. The last "Beyond the Return" report by Tech Nation, European Women in VC, and Founders Forum Group has shown - 88% of the VCs use an impact investing framework or tool to guide their investment decisions, with Western Europe being one of the most impact-oriented. Even more, founders are looking for impactful projects to work on, and it's pretty crucial for GenZ and younger generations to stand for some cause. The circular economy is one of the examples of how business models can become both scalable and impactful. So, there is room for another model as well. Impact helps to inspire critical stakeholders when you are an early-stage enterprise; it helps to spread the word and bring the right people on board. Do You Take Calculated Risks or do You Gamble? "Calculated risks" and "gambles" both involve making decisions under uncertainty, but they differ significantly in terms of how much thought, information, and strategy go into the decision-making process. The key differences are: Calculated Risks: A decision made after careful analysis of the possible outcomes, benefits, and drawbacks. The organisation has considered all available information and has a good understanding of the probability of success and failure. It provides a rational approach because it Involves logic, research, data analysis, and experience. The decision-maker evaluates the risks and rewards before acting. Effort is put into understanding and managing variables that can influence the outcome, and there is an attempt to mitigate risks and minimise the downsides. If a business decides to expand into a new market after studying customer demand, market conditions, competitor activity, and potential profits, they know there’s a risk, but they are prepared for possible challenges. Gambles A decision where little analysis is done, and the outcomes depend heavily on chance or luck. There's often a large element of unpredictability, with little or no control over the variables. Gambles are driven more by hope, intuition, or gut feeling rather than careful planning and data. There is often a significant lack of understanding or regard for the odds of success or failure. Gambles tend to be riskier because the decision-maker lacks the information needed to estimate the potential outcome. The consequences expose the company to high levels of risk and uncertainty and the outcome is left to fate. A not uncommon example is a start-up founder launching a product without any market research, simply using gut feel and hoping it will attract customers. Calculated risks involve thoughtful, informed decision-making with a clear understanding of potential outcomes, while gambles are decisions with little information or strategy, relying more on luck than analysis. Why are Used EVs Selling at Bargain Prices? …and what does it mean for the EV market in general? Over the last couple of days, we covered a recent McKinsey & Company survey on European attitudes toward EVs. Many of the results were consistent with what the press has been reporting for some time. Still, there were some surprising elements in the survey. As I was covering the survey results, the Wall Street Journal published an article on the current state of the used EV market. It seemed to make sense to include an analysis of that article in the EV discussion. Hence, today’s post. Great work on net zero . WELL DONE Coventry University. I appreciate that you and the WMCA are pushing the boundaries. I would reinforce that we need to :- 1) challenge the notion of "NET ZERO". NET zero is not good enough ? We must reduce carbon output in absolute terms 2) This is not a future state , we need to urgently start to decarbonise the manufacturing supply chain now. Not to wait for new generations to solve. We have alot of embedded carbon in our current process that needs to be addressed. 3) We live and work in a global economy, We need transparent and internationally agreed means of assessing the carbon foot print of the products and services so that consumer can understand; And make informed choices. 4) Government, Academia and Industry must be active partners ,with active incentives to meet these targets. Without these three as legs of the stool working together ,the metaphorical stool will fall over

While attending COP29 last week, I had the pleasure of participating in a fireside chat at the Solar Hub, with Ramesh Kumar Kuruppath, hosted by the International Solar Alliance. This was a fantastic opportunity to discuss the importance of public policy and business action to achieve climate goals, considering how to mobilise finance and encourage innovation, to scale global solutions to increase the availability and accessibility of renewable energy.   Some key takeaways: Public Policy to enable investment in renewables: We discussed successful policies like the EU Net Zero Industry Act and the US Inflation Reduction Act, which have significantly driven investment in clean technology and renewable energy. It will be interesting to see how more governments make national changes to scale renewable energy, and increase competitiveness of the transition. Collaborative efforts for infrastructure investment: Robust infrastructure investment is crucial for accelerating the adoption of renewables. This can be enhanced through collaboration, as governments and business share risks and opportunities to co-create policies and strategies for deploying investment and finance, especially for infrastructure to drive the clean energy transition. Leveraging innovation in countries without legacy infrastructure: There is opportunity for countries to improve their renewable energy infrastructure, especially where they lack legacy infrastructure. For example, Africa, with its vast solar resources, has immense potential for renewable energy, and Initiatives like the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) and innovative solutions like mini grids can drive the energy transition on the continent. Simplification of reporting standards: to give business the best opportunity to succeed, against a backdrop of an increasing volume of sustainability reporting requirements, consistency and simplification where possible across policy frameworks will be important for encouraging and enabling greater investment in the energy transition.   I hope these important conversations at #COP29 will help sustain momentum towards achieving our climate goals. We need joined-up industrial strategies, strong public policy and consistency in sustainability reporting to channel more capital towards climate action and solutions. There is a lot in the Get Britain Working white paper but as an advocate of place based approaches a slightly technical point was exciting: Consistent strategic geographies. The English Devolution White Paper will set out plans to create a system of consistent strategic geographies across England, which will provide the basis for a more locally led approach. Opens up potential for better data sharing across silos, integrated approaches across partners, putting people and places before institutional priorities and the combination of agendas not just authorities. These aspirations are laudable and the newly announced channels are great to see. The British Growth Partnership has great potential - just hope it isn’t allocated purely to ‘off the shelf’ #NetZero ambitions, #Fintech and #Biotech. Layering across all three above is #Space (Space Solar, data centres and MicroG Pharma for example). Look up to space - just 50 miles above us and ponder the excellent work of Elon Musk (SpaceX) We need folks like him to be present and engaged. Likewise, #AI and #Quantum offer the potential to define our world. IMHO we should also prioritise other #security / #deeptech. We live in an uncertain world where our opponents are moving at pace. Without security there is no #sustainability - indeed neither is there any #growth.
