This is a really interesting article about succession planning and the 9 box grid assessment method. I've been speaking to many HR and Talent Leaders over the last few months and it seems a lot of organisations still use this method, or a variation of. In my opinion there isn't a one size fits all method to talent assessment. Thoughts?

TQSolutions #skills research was on the road last week at the Unleash HR Conference in Paris. Whilst there were some impressive keynotes discussing #futureofwork #ai and #hrtech some of my favourite sessions were the practitioners talking about their work with #skills. I thought I would share and profile the people and organisations that presented along with my key takeaways: First up, Liz Elder from the LEGO Group who shared the 'Future Ready, Stellar Skills' mission where skills are a fundamental component of the 2032 strategy. Their POC was in the L&D team and effectively shifted the op model to one based on skills, this is now broadening to other areas of the organisation. The benefits of the skills 'play' is visibility, efficiency, focus, balance and impact. Skills are being supported by a leadership behavioural framework and Ai based technology. Next, David R. Blackburn Chartered CCIPD CCMI from the Bank of England who suggested that 'retention is the new recruitment' and that skills is a complete mindset shift. David is a proponent of using assessment where possible to assess skills, but also recognised the place for Ai inference and self-reporting. He said 'not all skill data is created equally, and assessed data rules'. Then Antony Shields from EY spoke about their Skills and Marketplace strategy which the Board sees as pivotal to drive productivity, experience whilst supporting cost realignment. The EY marketplace is available to all 400k employees, they use Ai to understand skills gaps and to inform acquisition. Antony sugggested EY could have been more purposeful with change and that change related to skills is different because you are playing around with people's IP. He sees this as THE opportunity for HR, and HR should think big about its ambition, go deep on change and foundation building. Finally, Clare Courtney and Laura Biswas from Finastra spoke about their pragmatic approach to skills which is focused on infrastructure and culture rather than 'getting rid of jobs' or driving mobility or re-skilling use-cases. The Skills COE conducts an annual skill needs analysis with the business and quarterly skills reviews. Their skills tech provides visibility and gives employees access to a career and skills navigator tool. Their advice was to focus on culture and mindset, make sure you align to an organisational why and do not underestimate the the 'flawless fundamentals'. Interestingly, Laura, the Skills COE leader comes from a background within the business and Sales in particular, i.e not HR. 4 very different organisations, 4 very different approaches, but all with #skills as part of the solution. I would encourage people to follow and connect with these practitioners, all of whom were super impressive and super passionate about the work they are doing. It was great to add the LEGO Group, Bank of England, EY and Finastra to TQSolutions bank of global skills research. #skillsbased #skillspowered #talentstrategy
