🌲 Embracing the Present 🌲 In the midst of a whirlwind life—balancing a global HR role, navigating post-acquisition transitions, parenting a toddler, renovating a house, and serving as a charity trustee amongst lots and lots of other things on the to do list - I sometimes forget to pause and disconnect. Being amongst the trees is my happy place, last week I took a few days to be with my family on a woodland break, a much-needed reminder to be present and cherish these moments. 📵Disconnecting helps recharge and refocus. 🥰 Being present with family creates invaluable memories and reminds us what’s important. 🤹‍♀️ It's okay to acknowledge that we're all human and juggling many roles. On a more serious, yet incredibly important, note today regarding Men‘s Mental Health Awareness Month in June: Nowadays, mental health is being more discussed than ever - but still not enough. Some are more open about their mental health, however, many still aren’t. Quite often men’s mental health is underreported, with men not reaching out for the support they need. Some might still feel as if people expect them to hide their emotions and be strong for others. Having or acknowledging a mental health condition is seen as a sign of weakness or lack of masculinity, WHICH NEEDS TO #CHANGE . It’s crucial to listen to anybody willing to open up & reach out to you. Let important people in your life know that you’re there. - It goes without saying, but of course, this isn’t limited to Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month! I see many in #HR, #OD and #Transformation roles, all asking the same fundamental questions about our disciplines, the work we do and whether it truly makes a difference. The questions range from the fundamentals such as the theory that we seem to base our approaches on, or the purpose we are supposed to be fulfilling in these roles, to the practical application and measurable impact of our work. People raise big questions about; #Talent, #Culture, #OD, #Learning, #EmployeeExperience, #LeadershipDevelopment, etc., never mind about the #HROperatingModel or #Transformations As I have explored this with colleagues and friends over the years, I have gotten many nodding heads or my favourite line, "I don't disagree, but this is what we do..." And yet, I don't hear very many satisfactory answers... Do you? I am collecting questions on #HR #OrganizationalDevelopment #Transformation topics, that don't have satisfactory answers today... as big or small as they are, maybe we can do something about it! On days like today, when we welcome a new starter into the business, I’m reminded of the critical role that effective onboarding plays in setting up new colleagues for success. Onboarding isn’t just about paperwork and administration – it’s about ensuring new hires feel supported and engaged from day one. By embedding individuals into the culture and values of the organisation through conversations, tours, and providing them with the tools, training and resources to thrive. I welcomed this HBR article exploring the link between the environmental climate crisis we are facing and the link to employee health (including mental health, affected by eco-anxiety), engagement and performance. Although maybe not intuitive and arguably secondary to more immediate risks and consequences - to population health for example, referenced in the article - it is less frequently articulated and something that warrants consideration when organisations build out risk-registers, compile environmental impact reports and metrics, and consider employee wellbeing plans.

'I've had a lot of conversations with Recruiters/HR managers but then I never hear back'. Something I hear often which is unfortunate and frustrating, I know. Who is to blame? Naturally, it's easy to put the blame on them. But upon reflection, is there anything we as applicants could be doing different? During the call... ▶ Did you ask establish clear timelines? ▶ Did you find out exactly what the next steps would be? ▶ Did you make it clear that you have active discussions ongoing elsewhere? ▶ Did you request an update regardless of positive/negative outcome? ▶ Did you let them know if you don't hear by 'set timeline' you will be following up? This may seem obvious but only a handful of the jobseekers I connect with on a daily basis show this level of initiative. In an ideal world, communication would be fluid and frequent but this is not reality. People are busy, they prioritize responsibilities and things slip through the cracks. Asking these questions won't guarantee you hear back but at the very least it will establish some level of commitment to feedback. It will also justify regular contact/update requests so that you can remain as informed as possible on your active processes. After many years, Marc White and I reconnected today to discuss recent HR trends and share best practice. It was brilliant to catch up after such a long time! Marc and I actually went to school together, and fun fact—he even sold me my first car. Although our career paths took different routes, we’ve both ended up in the same field, united by a shared passion for HR. Interestingly, we both began our journeys studying accounting at different colleges, only to discover it wasn’t for either of us. That realisation ultimately led us to HR, combining a focus on people with the strategic needs of business. Our conversation reaffirmed the immense impact of HR on organisations today. It’s no longer just about policies and procedures—it’s about driving culture, supporting innovation, and enabling businesses to thrive through their people. Reconnecting with Marc reminded me how valuable it is to nurture and revisit your network. You might be tempted to say ‘you’re a bit late to the party, Dom’ – though those of us still working from home in these (mostly) post-pandemic times still need to operate effectively. It can become too easy to decline offers to meet others face-face as you spend more and more time cooped up indoors. Don’t fall into that routine..
