Sounds usual right ? to me not really. In an effort to sharpen my software development skills specifically in desktop app development, I have embarked on a journey to learn ElectronJS. A JavaScript framework that allows us to develop desktop applications using web technologies. Now, this is a huge milestone. It proves progress is being made. From Nigerian Breweries Plc to Backend Development I'm Chikeluba Modozie, a dedicated web and software developer specializing in backend development. My path into the tech world has been a winding one, and I’m excited to share a piece of that journey with you today. Two years ago, I was working at Nigerian Breweries Plc in Enugu. While the job offered stability, I knew I wanted more—I was eager to challenge myself and grow in a field that truly excited me and where I could truly impact lives. I saved up and bought a laptop, which became my gateway into the tech industry. Deciding to leave my job and dive into technology full-time wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. I initially enrolled in the alx_africa Software Development program, hoping to kickstart my career. However, balancing side hustles to stay afloat made it difficult to meet their standards, and I couldn’t finish the program. Despite this setback, I didn’t give up on my dream. I went on to join the Upskill program by Genesys Tech Hub Enugu, while also taking a few courses on Udemy and Coursera to build my skills. The journey has had its ups and downs, especially when navigating the vast sea of online resources. But I’ve always believed that persistence and a strong support system can make all the difference. That’s why I applied to AltSchool Africa School of Engineering, where I’m majoring in backend development. This program offers the structured environment I need to thrive, and I’m looking forward to taking the entrance examination on September 18th. Today, I’m working as an intern at Teranium Co - chief digital team for your business where I’m involved in exciting projects using PHP and Laravel to bring innovative ideas to life. My passion for tech goes beyond just writing code; it’s about making a real impact through the solutions I develop and the knowledge I share with others. DESIGNER Vs A STREET BUSINESS MAN Nick Broekema made a post this morning and even before now, I had read a similar post from Alen Faljic A sentence he wrote that pricked me and I quote verbatim👇🏽 "Figma skills likely won't get you a raise, business skills more likely get you a raise." I remember when I just launched out as a UI/UX designer cum writer, I undermined my skill so well that I kept sucking at opportunities that came knocking I won't forget an opportunity of working with a firm from Asia/Chongqing, that proposed such a juicy pay for both the test job and monthly remuneration - I was so scared to even pitch to them that I folded on the interview date I tell designers it is not entirely about the "knowing of your craft" but also having a condiment of "mastering how to sell" that stands you out. There are a lot of Designers who are so skillful at their craft but can not pitch their way into getting their dream job, I don't know if I will be placing that as a PTSD syndrome. Sometimes it isn't all about the aesthetic templates that saves the day, it is simply your competence of selling. Be "street business smart as much as you're a design PRO" P.S. When Kotlin debutted in 2016, two years before I had fallen in love with Java, I knew somewhere within me that, Kotlin will be that tiebreaker! Someway somehow, but for JavaFX suite, Kotlin could hardly have any competition with Java. However, with Kotlin Compose released 3 years ago, and the broad ecosystem of platforms it targets with a rather efficient, seamless and easy development focus, I don't know why else I'd use Java! 😀 🥱 Kotlin Compose offers you a way to describe your UI just like how with Hardware Description Languages (HDL) you can define hardware for machines to build them exactly (in simple terms). Last Week Was Unforgettable at the Lagos Node for [Redacted] Hackathon 🌍 Walking into the alx_africa Hub Lagos last week, I wasn’t sure what to expect. In A Role, You Should Either Learn📑 or Earn💵 The Startup Advantage 🚀... My NSS journey started with much confidence in my abilities, having acquired some pretty "good" skills. After tailoring my CV and applying for countless opportunities, I had two responses 🤣 (Out of, I lost count at a point). They were all from the "big leagues" 😌, and I guess they are big for a reason. Couldn't get through all aptitude tests (Unless someone scored all corrects, I should have gotten in 🤭). Luckily i was posted to another "top one" and received a "We appreciate your time and your effort...", you know the continuation ❌️😂, after getting through the aptitude test and a rather beautiful interview experience. I did, I saw and I conquered. Yesterday, I gave a run through the summary of how my training with Techdev went and I promise to speak on the five key things I learnt and here comes the writing on them. Each phase of the fellowship was a learning ground for me, not just in the aspect of technical and soft skills but also in the aspect of life coping skills, it really helped me discover a new dimension . There are five key things I will use to describe my life during the fellowship. Which are Resilience and Consistency: Resilience kicked in when I rose above my challenges. While obstacles are inevitable, resilience propels us forward. My determination to bounce back stronger was fueled by consistency. Staying committed and steadfast in my efforts, resilience bolstered my drive to remain unwavering and dedicated to my goals. Sacrifice and Determination: Sometimes, we sacrifice what we have for a greater cause, believing it will be worth it. I resigned from my job to fully commit to my training, eliminating all distractions. Fueled by determination, I embraced my project wholeheartedly, even with limited knowledge at the time. Good Support System: During my tough times, my community of friends and supportive group kept me going. The power of a strong support system cannot be overstated. I’m deeply grateful to those who helped me through my training and stood by me. Special thanks to my mentor, Hamzah Abdulfattah, and my friends and well wishers Adelopo Sumayyah, Mustapha Mubaraq, Umar Abdulganiyy, Sanni Eniola, Morufat Lamidi, and Abdulsalam Abdulrasheed to mention but a few. Collaboration and Teamwork: Collaboration fuels collective effort, leading to meaningful contributions and outstanding results. I’m grateful to all Code Queen members. We started eager and open, navigating our challenges together. My journey started with a question: should I do engineering or a BSc + MSc in computer science? It was tough to decide in junior college without any guidance. I had to make the decision alone. Not everyone can afford engineering, so I chose BSc + MSc. This way, I could start working early and have time for a part-time job while studying. The journey was tough. I paid all my education fees myself due to financial crises. I did odd jobs while studying for my BSc, got a tech job, and then completed my master's while working. It was a thrilling journey, and today, I feel proud of myself. I completed my education by myself, both financially and academically. I'll miss studying for long hours. Sometimes I wish college and education never ended because education gave me confidence and helped me understand myself better. I love studying, and even though my college is over, I will keep learning new things. If I could, I would pursue a PhD, but that decision depends on many factors. HNG11’🎊🎊 #600,000 naira!!! That’s the amount I had to look for to start my tech career. In December last year I thought long and hard about how I was going to make 2024 a better and productive year and I realized drastic plans required drastic measures. I had just sat and had a lengthy conversation with my Godfather and he told me about a coding academy and it just synced with my new year goals but with the money I needed and my account balance at that time it seemed like my career had ended before it even started.  I’m an HNGi6 alumni and everytime anybody wanted advice on how to go into tech, my first reference was always HNG because that was how I started in 2019. I opened my twitter app and looked up when the next internship was going to start and what I saw was “Dates will be communicated soon”. I simply turned on post notification and crossed my fingers. January came and I decided to start the year with the coding school and join HNG whenever it started. With my calculation,that would be when I’m rounding up with the coding school and I was right after all. HNGi11 has officially kicked off! Now I’ve got to use ReactJs in HNG and I’m thrilled. Let’s do a little comparison so that the non techies can understand my enthusiasm also. Javascript is a programming language useful for designing interactive and dynamic web pages. Its features or syntax do not require any additional libraries and frameworks. It handles the DOM (Document Object Model), events and communication using APIs.  React on the other hand is a JavaScript library. It helps developers to create reusable code that can be easily composed into complex interfaces. Its popularity is attributable to its adaptability and ease of use.  JavaScript is a comparatively low-entry language that is simple to while React adds a component-based design and JSX syntax, which may need more time to master for those unfamiliar with it.  In JavaScript, the browser mechanism and the code itself determines how well JavaScript performs. It is a single-threaded language learning, which might cause delays in performance in some situations but just by refreshing the virtual DOM of React, it minimizes re-rendering and improves speed. This leadto greater performance than direct in basic JavaScript. I honestly feel it’ll be awesome working with ReactJs mainly because I have experience working with JavaScript so it shouldn’t be too draining learning it.
