Research by NHS Providers found that 73% of trust leaders surveyed said that funding and financial constraints are the biggest barrier to digital transformation. Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, said that outdated technology often adds to clinicians’ workloads and hinders, rather than improves, efficiency and productivity. “Digital transformation has huge potential to give patients better access to their data, better access to care and to ensure that staff can get the reliable information they need to inform decision-making and improve quality of care. I love it when the good guys win. C2-Ai were generating transformative outcomes in healthcare way before the hype around AI. They do this by adjusting for clinical risk at scale, guiding organisations to predict avoidable harm and mortality by intervening early and precisely. Their engine is trained by world-experts on over 500 million patient records from 47 source countries. They are the gold standard. Critically, they have done this globally for years without adding burden to frontline staff or generating friction in workflows. This is aligned with my own work at Vita Healthcare Solutions. Our thesis is that healthcare is fundamentally different to other industries when it comes to scale and adoption. It’s not that scalable health innovation gains adoption. Instead, our thesis is that adoptable health innovation scales (which is also why most health accelerators or investors don’t add value). Part of the problem around the excessive hype in AI today is that we often end up concentrating on exciting early innovation that hasn’t yet fully found its feet. There is a place for that, of course (and some wonderful early-stage firms), but not if it means we overlook the mature innovation that we still so badly need to see reach scale. Most innovation agencies are primarily incentivised to support the continual growth and progress of our early pipeline from ideation to GTM, but there is still a gap in supporting efforts to scale for mature firms. To be clear, if we can’t ensure a firm like C2-Ai scales, something is badly wrong. They’re not alone; Patients Know Best, ORCHA, AdviseInc, Cognitant Group Limited, Cogniss, Axela, Written Medicine, CyberLiver Limited, PatientSource, Medefer, Cyted Health, Surgery Hero, C the Signs, inicio health, Doc Abode , iBox Healthcare, FITFILE, ImproveWell, Inavya Ventures Ltd., Patchwork Health, Vivan Therapeutics, Inovia Bio, Feedback Medical, MediShout, Pangaea Data, Newton's Tree, Stress Point Health, Lenus Health, Arcturis, uMotif, syd™, IgniteData, Visionable Global and a few dozen more firms (sorry if I missed you out) should all be supported to scale nationally and internationally. I’ve advocated for C2-Ai for a while. During the height of the Covid pandemic, I produced a list of 10 essential UK innovations for a pandemic response on LinkedIn and they made it in easily. When I later produced the First 100 Export Playbook for Digital Health for the Department for Business and Trade (then the DIT), I scored the innovators formally in private, and C2-Ai were the highest ranked by some distance. If you want to protect patients in your facility, region or country from avoidable harm, or want to finally invest in a digital health firm with a huge but realistic TAM-SAM-SOM there are few actions that feel as obvious or as necessary as engaging with C2-Ai.

Key Learnings from the Healthcare Partnership Network Event I recently attended the two-day Healthcare Partnership Network event in Manchester. This networking and shared learning experience brought together over 150 senior leaders from the NHS and the sector's most transformative suppliers. Some reflections: Data: Crucial but Not Enough While data is essential for healthcare transformation, it's only part of the equation. True progress requires building robust infrastructure, deploying intelligent software and applications, and fostering a culture that embraces change. A quote that resonates from the event is: "For every £1 invested in technology, an equal investment in people and culture is vital to cultivate an environment primed for adoption." This makes perfect sense, but it's often overlooked. We tend to see far greater investment in developing innovations than in their implementation. The Human Touch Remains Paramount Whilst innovations like ambient AI voice recognition, and generative AI models are already making a positive impact by streamlining clinical workflows, enhancing decision support, and improving back-office functions, the human element of change remains paramount. Placing the needs of clinicians and patients at the heart of everything is critical to finding the right balance and making the most of the opportunities technology brings. Clarity is Key: at the very foundation, it's vital to be clear on the problem you're trying to solve. Opportunities and Challenges The future holds both opportunities and challenges. One of biggest risk I see is fragmentation and duplication: It’s is very common to see several services and organisations in the same ICS footprint deploying different solutions to address the same problems. While AI's potential is significant, its adoption in healthcare lags behind other sectors due to legacy systems, skill gaps, regulatory complexities, and fragmentation. It's definitely an employers market at the moment in terms of digital change managers/innovators/leaders and any number of other titles that have been self bestowed on the community of people striving to change how business is done. Despite this landscape the NHS is struggling to leverage this tech in many areas. Here are a few of my opinions on why this maybe: 1. Budget constraints - It's remarkabley difficulty for people to spend what "little" money the NHS currently has within the system we currently use to do business. 2. Legacy systems - the historical issue of not being an early adopter, or even one of the masses, leaves systems becoming propped up with workarounds and development at the point of being deprecated. As such, new tech is hard to integrate or the budget is needed to bring the system up to speed with something that was built in the 20s. This is a cycle that continues till the adoption curve is shifted left. 3. Regulatory and compliance hurdles - I know a handful of people who can navigate this without the need for external agencies in support. Skills gap is real. 4. Culture Resistance - If it's not directly saving money or a front line spend, just knowing by instinct is not enough. we're stuck in the no evidence, no change - no change, no evidence cycles. Cultural and person based change could be a week's worth of lectures let alone a LI post so I will leave that there. The demand for digital change managers is real, driven by sectors that are actively embracing digital transformation. However, the NHS's unique challenges highlight why it may lag in this tech adoption despite the overall trend. What are your experiences or thoughts on this matter? How can we modernise the NHS to make it sustainable for our future generations? Legacy technology and paper-based processes are holding back the UK public sector’s digital transformation. This latest report by Government Transformation Magazine’s is a great read to find out how addressing technical debt and modernising systems can unlock efficiency and improve outcomes. 💷 Autumn Budget 2024: what does it mean for NHS digital transformation? 💷 The Autumn Budget included £2bn investment in NHS technology and digital essential services. As Sophie Burton-Jones explains in her blog, while this is welcome news and will support our "tilt towards technology” Lord Darzi has called for, many have called for more clarity on how the additional investment will be spent and used to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Also commenting on the NHS tech budget, techUK Vice-Chair of the Health and Social Care Council, Charlotte Lewis says: “Questions have been raised about whether the £2bn technology investment in the budget is new money given the Spring Budget allocated £3.4bn for technology with £2bn for EPRs. But if we are to believe what Rachel Reeves said the money allocated in March was “monopoly money” so on that logic, it’s new because it’s real. That aside – the real question is “what kind of money is it?”. There needs to be sufficient “capital and revenue” funds available to support the successful implementation of digital transformation projects, and importantly, there ought to be transparency on where the money goes and what it is spent on to ensure it is used to make a positive impact.” As ever the devil will be in the detail.
