Ipsos UK presented its latest research data on inequities in cancer care at Patient Information Forum (PIF) webinar today. They found an invisible gender bias in people's experience of patient centred cancer care. For this piece of research, gender was defined as sex defined at birth. It found female physicians more highly prioritise addressing patients' concerns, answering questions and considering patient choice in treatment decisions. Male physicians were much less likely to provide emotional support, seeing this as a job of nurse specialists. The biased view that women are skilled at dealing with emotions means they are also perceived as more emotional themselves. This feeds other beliefs, physicians ❌ think women are more emotional in consultations ❌ women are more likely to be over anxious about their health ❌ think women are more likely to present with mild symptoms ❌ think men present with serious symptoms. As a result men's symptoms are treated more seriously. When there was no clear diagnostic pathway, for example breast cancer screening, women cancer patients experienced minimisation of symptoms, dismissal and medical gaslighting. Women feel they need to be pushy or assertive to get the care they need. They don't feel listened to. However, men's emotional needs are under provided for. Constraints on consultation time is feeding the gender disparity. HCPs said they don't have time to practice person centred care or provide emotional support. This was a fascinating piece of research with implications for the provision of health information. PIF members can catch up with the webinar online. The Patient Information Forum (PIF) and Ipsos UK have published new research into health information access across the UK. Knowledge is Power offers new insights on information access, trusted sources, communication with healthcare professionals and the impact of misinformation. The report reveals the demand for the NHS to signpost trusted information and wide support for the verification of health information. Knowledge is Power makes five recommendations on the right to health information, aligned with the three shifts proposed in the NHS 10-year plan. 💡 The recommendations include implementing PRSB's About Me and Shared Decision Making Standards across the #NHS to support healthcare professionals to have better conversations with people. UPDATED 📊: Our public perceptions polling with Ipsos UK monitoring changing public perceptions of the standards of NHS and social care services has been updated this week. On the NHS: ➡️ The public have pessimistic expectations for the coming 12 months, with 52% thinking the general standard of care will get worse over the next year. Publication from the Archives Navigating the Landscape of Digital Health - United Kingdom Digital Health Technologies (DHTs) still represent a major opportunity, but England must get back on track to unlock their full value.   In December 2022, OHE explored the English DHT landscape, providing lessons learned that may be of value to decision-makers beyond the UK. However, recent developments show that the UK needs to refocus its strategy to fully benefit from DHTs potential. The complexity 🔹England’s DHT ecosystem is built around a diverse network of stakeholders. 🔹Overlapping regulatory regimes have resulted in slow legislative progress.   Closing digital literacy gaps 🔹Despite being one of the most digitalised countries, many UK citizens and healthcare workers lack essential digital skills. 🔹Cross-sector actions are essential to improve digital literacy.   Health Technology Assessments (HTAs) & reimbursement 🔹No standardised reimbursement pathways exist for DHTs, making innovation challenging. 🔹NICE is testing approaches to streamline the value assessment process, avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach. Efforts to redesign regulatory frameworks post-Brexit aim to balance innovation with safety. However, improving digital literacy and streamlining HTAs are crucial to ensuring DHTs can reach their full potential. DHTs will play an increasingly critical role in the future of healthcare, but strategic updates and reforms are urgently needed to unlock their true value for patients and the system.
