The government’s launched a consultation on the future of the NHS. There are plans for a digital and data infrastructure with single patient records and improved data sharing between GPs and hospitals. The Open Data Institute's co-founder and exec chair, Sir Nigel Shadbolt, was on BBC Radio Four’s World at One discussing plans to digitise services and the challenge of tech integration in the NHS. Key points included: 1️⃣ The NHS has a complex history with large IT solutions; it requires consensus and multiple voices for effective implementation.  2️⃣ Strong data governance is essential to ensure proportionate and appropriate access to sensitive health data.  3️⃣ There is a need to address the ‘unfashionable’ topic of the necessary data infrastructure for interoperability and usability.  4️⃣ Investment is needed in open standards for data access - to overcome the problem of standards being locked down by the owners of proprietary systems. 5️⃣ An emphasis on high standards of governance and modern security measures is essential.  6️⃣ We need multiple providers to build and maintain the data infrastructure, not just one company.  7️⃣ We must agree on data discovery, access, and interoperability principles.  8️⃣ Potential benefits include providing insights across the entire population's health data. 9️⃣ An example of successful data access is the Open Safely Project at Oxford, led by Ben Goldacre. This is one the best examples of the use of AI I've seen because it sticks to the three golden rules. 1. Responsible and Ethical 2. Understand the service design and focus where the challenge is 3. Has good quality data to feed the model A great example of how the Hippo team and Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust have made some real impacts in the healthcare setting.

Another great recommendation in this report: DHSC should mandate that social care software providers build open and easily accessible APIs into their products to enable the flow of data from these products to Capacity Tracker. DHSC should also specify data standards to ensure data submitted to Capacity Tracker can be utilised by commissioners regardless of software provider. Thanks again Gus Kennedy and also for your recent reflections on these posts Liam Cahill I have a slide when I talk, It starts with ‘People don’t get it wrong on purpose’ and in the NHS, the large majority want to do the right thing for patients and for staff But - if you don’t know what you don’t know, and you haven’t got the headspace to learn, or the guidance to follow isn’t there yet, and you hold the heavy responsibility of being ‘custodian of the public purse’, then the status quo is easier to maintain, than taking a perceived risk, then fail, then be challenged why you made that choice. What the NHS is particularly challenged with is procuring or commissioning for value, not just cost of product, but VFM in terms of usability, reducing product overlap, improved experience etc. Commissioners sometimes find that hard to understand, and for many, they rely on IT support, which isn’t the same as understanding service design or usability/experience of multiple systems all at once As a product/supplier agnostic company, Redmoor Health have a service offer to support ICBs who may need help through the process of identifying new solutions, engaging with users (receivers and providers), understanding the challenges of General Practice, and handholding through the process of implementation It’s not procurement, but added value as a service https://lnkd.in/eiCSJbyb I suspect as we approach the end of the year, many ICBs will just roll over contracts for 25/26, because the window for engagement is shrinking and the frameworks didn’t get released To all suppliers out there in similar position to Gus, get in touch, tell me what your thing does and we’ll try together to showcase how it can help the system Don’t give up, just set your expectations low in terms of speed

What if the key to transforming healthcare regulation lies in the 80% of data we have still yet to properly explore? 🔎 A couple of important reviews of the CQC dropped early this week - Dr Penny Dash 's final report and an internal review by Sir Mike Richards on the single assessment framework. There is lots to unpack and I am sure there will be many posts that do just that, however unsurprisingly my attention was caught by 'Section 10: Data and Insight' in the latter report (https://lnkd.in/eYF5z6T7) which recommends expanding/exploring data sources to include (quite rightly) those from 'Getting It Right First Time - GIRFT' and 'Learning from Patient Safety Events - LFPSE', amongst others that are quantitively designed. There is a widely touted stat however (with studies to back it up) that over 80% of healthcare documentation exists as unstructured meaning there’s an even greater opportunity for insights to be unlocked. Combining the structured with unstructured could provide a more holistic picture when evaluating service quality and safety to drive improvements across the system. While the current recommendations focus on structured data it would be great to see unstructured data such as patient feedback explored in future expansions, a good basis of which exists in the work Quantium Health have been undertaking with NHS partners over the past year.
