When i was reading the “PM Burnout Report” i indeed payed the most attention to the part Petra is talking about So today, If you’re a Head of Product or a Product Lead, take a moment to reflect: • Are your Product Managers clear on their roles? • Do they have a well-defined scope of work? • Are their efforts recognized and appreciated? • Do they have a clear growth plan with set goals? If you have got at least one “no”, you might need to do a better job Burnout can stem from various factors, but as a leader, it’s your responsibility to prioritize your team’s well-being. When you take care of your team, they can take care of the product.

Great post by Ant Murphy; are you a lone wolf or a lion who supports its pride?? I completely agree, that PMs can often work alone rather than with other PMs however the best PMs cultivate a strong sense of Product craft and work together to better each other, their deliveries, business and the product craft as a whole. As senior Product Managers, it’s our job to work with other PMs to help improve our Product Craft and how we “run the business’ as well execute our core responsibilities.. I often worked with other PMs during: • Delivery of progs where PMs lead diff tracks • Craft initiatives to improve our Product skills • Informal coaching, supporting others to be better • Communtiy activities such as Allyship and DEI work There’s a lot to be said for PMs who can work with other PMs to multiply the impact of the whole versus the sum of the individuals. Are you even a Product Leader if you don’t cultivate your business’ product craft and improve your product community as a whole?

Product Leadership by Richard Banfield, Martin Eriksson, and Nate Walkingshaw: - This book is packed with diverse opinions from top professionals, making it a valuable guide for navigating the nuances of product leadership. One standout insight is that there’s no singular correct way to build great products. Instead, adopting the right mentality and approach is crucial to leading effectively and avoiding common pitfalls. 2. The Captain Class by Sam Walker: - Walker takes an analytical look at the success behind the world's greatest sports teams, emphasizing the importance of leaders who engage in thankless tasks, maintain emotional control, and communicate practically and democratically. Interestingly, the book suggests that the best leaders are more like Tim Duncan than Michael Jordan. This illustration encourages us to rethink our leadership style, aiming for humility and quiet influence rather than seeking the spotlight. 3. I had the opportunity to join a webinar today in which Teresa Torres discussed the common mistakes that product teams make when trying to construct and use Opportunity Solution Trees (OST). My biggest takeaways: -As amazing as generative AI can be, DO NOT let AI (or any automated process) do this work for you. The work IS the point, the document is not. -This is a method of using samplings of customers in order to make decisions - this is not quantitative data. Recognize the value of each and do not confuse the two! -The OST is a living document - return to it after every 3-4 customer interviews (you should be doing at least 1 customer interview per week) and adjust based on what real customers are telling you. -Oh yeah - and if you are not conducting customer interviews on a regular basis, you are not ready to start using an OST. All Product Mgt coaching (PMC) is valuable if there is a tangible RoI. The problem is ensuring the cost meets the value. Coaches ask for a fee based on their own experience, not the level of student and career level (mostly), for obv reasons. This makes it difficult for those in the earlier stages of Product Management to be able to afford good PMC, which are the ones who need it the most but are unlikely to get the most RoI due to the high cost. I’ve found this is similar for all coaching. Guess what I’ve been reading in between meetings these past two weeks? David Pereira’s book, Untrapping Product Teams – it is that good! I first came across David Pereira and his work at Agile Tour Vilnius last year. I attended his presentation on Untrapping Product Teams, and it was so anti-bullshit, straightforward, and grounded in his own failures and triumphs that I knew I needed to learn more from him. As a Scrum Master and Agile Coach for years, I recognise the importance of continually bolstering my product knowledge to truly partner with the Product Managers I work with. David’s book has already helped me immensely on client work, allowing me to spot barriers to value creation and gently steer improved ways of working. This book only arrived two weeks ago, so that’s a hell of a return on investment. I really enjoyed Mind the Product and Mews Meet Up at Rich Mix, Shoreditch this evening where the topic was collaboration in product trios (Product manager + Engineering Manager + designer).. check out a recording at: https://lnkd.in/ejTAfGt8 It was the first Meet Up I've been to for a while and I'm keen to go to more and meet more PMs (and non-PMs) and hear how they work and learn from their experiences, which takes me back to tonight's topic: working in product trios. It's not the first time I've heard about this and I've worked this way before but I haven't implemented it where it wasn't already happening, so it was interesting to hear about how Mews (Aldair Borges, Jakub Tkadleček, Zuzana Hrušovská) and Tesco (Amanda Ho, Dr. John McCarthy) work in trios and how they got started. I love working in smaller, focussed groups with an equal balance of perspectives from different disciplines... but how do you ensure others on the squad don't feel excluded? I'm not a fan of huge meetings as they often result in a lot of conversation but little strategic discussion that leads to action, and they tend to be dominated by the loudest in the room. With one designer in a squad and often multiple engineers, the balance is also off... is product trios the answer? How do you ensure it doesn't shut down wider collaboration across the whole squad? In today's vast options of tools and technology, how are #productmanagers collecting and cultivating #userfeedback from their users? Some ways I've seen companies do this: - Only collect user feedback from CX - tickets, inquiries, and what customers reach out about or complain about is generally how we learn about our products. - Companies use a survey vs NPS or CSAT, but not 100% clear what actions should be taken from those results (or how to improve them), how have you improved these scores? - Perhaps the product or design team conducts user interviews over video or in-person to test prototypes, proof of concepts, or learn more about interest in new features and adjacent products. How is this information aggregated, reviewed, or presented? - Some teams have $$ and automate or contract out tools such as UserTesting, Dovetail, Userlytics, or I heard of Vurvey for creating customer #AI #personas for businesses. What tools have you used? Is there even a best practice for user research? Is doing some better than none? The "sweet spot" in the product lifecycle is that perfect intersection where customer needs, market demand, and business goals align. Every product manager should aim to: Solve the right problem: Identify a genuine customer pain point. Target the right audience: Know your user persona inside out. Launch at the right time: Time the release to maximize impact and capture market momentum.
