🌟 The Impact of Sickness Levels on the UK Workforce 🌟 📊 The 23rd annual CIPD Health and Wellbeing at Work report reveals that the UK's sickness absence rate has soared to its highest in over a decade. Employees are now absent for an average of 7.8 days per year, marking a significant rise from the pre-pandemic average of 5.8 days. An estimated 18 million workdays are lost each year due to poor mental health. 🔴The Impact: Productivity: Prolonged absences diminish overall productivity and output. Financial Costs: Sick pay, temporary staffing, and decreased output add to financial pressures. Operational Challenges: Absence management demands administrative work and affects team dynamics. 🔴The Solution: Robust Mental Health Support Frameworks: Organisations need to implement comprehensive frameworks to support mental health at all levels. One-on-one Support: Provide confidential counselling, therapy, and coaching services to employees struggling with stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. Training and Awareness: Develop a mutual understanding of personal and collective challenges and barriers, and support each other as a team. Employee Engagement: Employees with higher engagement levels tend to have better mental health. Encourage a positive work environment, open communication, recognition of achievements, and employee participation in decision-making. Mental Health Awareness Promotion: Communicate regularly about mental health and wellbeing. Host workshops, webinars, and campaigns to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage seeking assistance when necessary. Leadership Commitment: It's crucial for senior leaders to advocate for mental health. They should set an example, prioritise self-care, and promote a healthy work-life balance. I've just finished a session with a coaching client - a Senior Leader, super experienced, very successful but had got stuck. "I feel like I'm in a wind tunnel, there's 100's of pieces of paper blowing everywhere, it's so noisy, it's so overwhelming and I'm spinning. I can't get out." I am working with lots of Leaders who are having feelings of overwhelm, overextending themselves, over committing or not being focused on anything. There's a lot going on isn't there - it makes sense. The coaching is helping them get clear and intentional, ensuring they don’t use their energy resource without careful consideration. You cannot do everything all at once, even if you might wish it were so. Here's a little reminder of the importance of being intentional. Reminding you to be specific with what you do and who you keep around you, and to be intentional with your time, your energy, and your circle. Oh and that wind tunnel - they've got a remote control they use to turn it down or even off, they know what to tune into before the papers start to blow. They are consciously working on strategies to manage their state and be resourceful. Are you able to tune in, find and take on the most resourceful state for you?

One thing I loved about being on holiday was the opportunity to read lots! For years I only read non-fiction books and got back into fiction books as it’s a way that allows me to fully switch off. I always love it when a fiction book has something that makes me stop and read it again. This ⬇️ was one such quote from ‘The Book of Doors’ (highly recommend!). So often we place happiness in our future, the ‘I’ll be happy when….’ thoughts, and yet we’re never in our future which can place happiness always out of reach. Each day it’s a choice to look for and create happiness in our lives. Yes it’s can feel hard at first and the more you consistently make that choice, the easier and more instinctive it becomes. I wanted to share this and give you a nudge to look for and create happiness in your life today. What’s making you happy today? Leaders recognise that #transparency and #vulnerability can be challenging - but they are essential for building real trust with your teams and other stakeholders. When we are open about both wins and the hurdles along the way, we set the stage for others to do the same. Creating an environment where people feel safe to share challenges is powerful. Tools like regular feedback loops help. One method I’ve seen work well in my practice is the ‘Start-Stop-Continue’ framework for feedback. Start initiating practices that can improve performance. Stop counterproductive or unhelpful behaviours. Continue with and acknowledge what is working.
