𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝗼 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 (𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗼!) When Kindle launched, I thought it might be the end of bookstores like Waterstones. Who’d want to store hundreds of books when they could carry thousands on a single device? But this Saturday, I stepped into the bustling Waterstones in London—and it was packed. Adults were queuing to take photos with Paddington himself, and the aisles were alive with people browsing, reading, and chatting. It was more than a store; it was a community. Waterstones didn’t just survive in the Kindle era; they adapted. They focused on what made them unique: creating memorable experiences, opening new stores, and engaging their audience through social media. It’s a reminder that great products (and great businesses) stand the test of time because they meet a deep need—one that tech alone can’t always satisfy. For me, this brings back memories of hours spent with my son, letting him pick out books on his “unlimited” budget—testing my commitment as he stacked up his choices with excitement! ‘It’s just the right thing to do’ Yesterday was my one year anniversary at Cambrionix, after a 14yr leadership stint at Amazon, so I’ve been doing a bit of reflecting. I’ve fallen in love with my new gig. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all sweetness and light, but if I summarise the ‘Why’ behind the love thing, it’s being empowered to make decisions that are just the right thing to do. On Wednesday I had a customer meeting, and an opportunity presented that was outside of our core strategy. It’ll bend us out of shape a bit, and the commercial reward may or may not be significant. But these were good people, doing good for society, and my crew can help. It’s just the right thing to do. So I took a bold bet and said yes. We’ll work the details out, learn some stuff, and be proud. A couple of folks in the team got unwell. Contractually, over time, pay should go down. The last thing these folks needed was financial worries. It’s just the right thing to do. We committed SDE resource to building some bold bet tech that would help customers reduce their energy consumption. Our intuition told us it might be commercially valuable, but it’s a heavy lift. We committed. It was just the right thing to do (early anecdotal feedback is that customers will love it). My team don’t ask for permission to work flexibly, and there’s zero presenteeism (unsubtle dig at 5-day RTO mandates…). They do have super challenging goals, and an expectation that they’ll bend themselves out of shape occasionally for the cause. It’s unwritten. They’re busting their collective asses right now to invent new stuff on tight schedules. And I guess some of them were off early last night trick or treating with their kids. Just the right thing to do. And guess what. We lost no-one to a competitor. Our employee satisfaction ratings are off the charts. We’re growing fast. Our investors are happy. This is it. These are my values. We’re going to win big, doing it the right way. The businesses we partner with, big or small, it starts here. It's still early days, but there is a sense of optimism around the new Labour government. Building the UK's tech and digital sovereignty, through greater support for AI and cloud innovations, will be crucial to ushering in a period of growth. Labour has also pledged to make Britain a leading green superpower. Although not part of their manifesto, this mission is heavily intertwined with support for the tech sector. The rapid expansion of data centre capacity to fuel AI demands requires innovative methods to reduce power requirements. There has to be more cost effective methods for offsetting energy needs than building nuclear fusion reactors with new data centres. Another crucial move is reassessing how government contracts are awarded. Levelling the playing field will give our local tech talent the opportunities they deserve which will reduce reliance on Big Tech and promote a more diverse and competitive market. By backing diverse business models and fostering innovation will drive the UK tech industry forward.

In the world of tech, what greater gift than a sneak preview into what is being developed at Google. On this occasion, it was #GoogleCloud’s AI-powered community project and I had the privilege of following the fabulously talented Matthew Buskell and his AI brainchild over the past few months. Matthew believes AI is a participation sport and I have certainly participated and learned so much in the process, learnings that I have promptly applied to other areas of my life. For now, this is about #GoogleCloud’s #Gemini (with its gargantuan and ever growing contextual knowledge) and certainly #Vertex being brought to bear on #SAP and #RISE projects. The surprising parallels between "hooking up" and "MFA's" The English language is a tapestry rich with variations, influenced by diverse cultures and regions. Take the simple word “chip,” which in the US conjures images of crisps, but in the UK, refers to a popular side dish - fries. Similarly, the phrase “hooking up” carries distinct connotations across the Atlantic. If you’re curious about its British meaning, drop me a note. This brings us to a critical acronym in our industry: MFA. Typically, it stands for “Made for Advertising,” but a narrow interpretation does a disservice to its broader, more nuanced applications. It’s crucial to recognise that the term MFA can bifurcate into distinctly different paths: Made for Advertising: This version represents quality content created by professionals - thoroughly researched, meticulously fact-checked, and rigorously edited. These are the platforms where advertisers should invest confidently, knowing their ads support and appear alongside reputable journalism. Made for Arbitrage: Conversely, this interpretation refers to sites optimised to maximise clicks and ad revenue at the expense of content quality and user experience. These are the MFAs that the industry must scrutinise. Every major publication, from The Financial Times to CNN, creates content with an eye toward advertising. They build and engage audiences to create value for advertisers. To argue that all such efforts are mere MFA's undervalues the essential role of journalism in our society. If we reject MFA's wholesale, we reject the very foundation of media-supported journalism. The distinction between the two types of MFA is seldom discussed yet is critically important. As industry leaders, it’s our responsibility to refine our language and understanding to ensure that advertising dollars are spent wisely and ethically. Since the inception of the printing press, the advertising model has been pivotal in disseminating information. Let’s not allow the evolution of language to deter us from investing in and benefiting from legitimate, high-quality MFA platforms. Remember, “hooking up” in professional terms means connecting - the same way brands connect with audiences through well-crafted MFA. Let’s embrace the full spectrum of what MFA's can represent and ensure our investments not only deliver positive ROI but also bolster the integrity of content creation and most importantly the future of journalism.

While at first I grumbled at how dull and wonky the Labour Party (UK) #campaign in the #UK was feeling from the outset, it’s clearly the right strategy as it contrasts with the last 14 years, especially the last few. Serious, a bit subdued and with general positive policies and a few select high level targets is enough to give the needed change to #voters. Keir Starmer comes across as a decent guy who cares, which is quite an achievement for PM candidates. On a personal note I wish Labour were talking a little more about improving the long term relationship with #Europe and their #trade policies are positive. Even reinstating #Erasmus for UK students would be meaningful and immediate 👏to show a break from the #Brexit crowd. I know we can’t dream of the UK rejoining the #EU but there are many ways to get closer and more cooperative again. On the work side the fact the campaign is focused on #competitiveness is very positive although it’s anyone’s guess how important #digital and #tech really will be given the litany of things to fix/change. Won’t be a priority immediately even though the UK #tech sector and #AI is thriving and growing and needs ongoing support. #UKEU #EuropeTogether #Labour #elections

London's tech scene is buzzing, with the highest number of new tech companies incorporated in the city during the first quarter of 2024. The capital saw a whopping 16% increase from the previous year, making it the go-to spot for tech start-ups and innovators. The UK's tech industry is on the rise, experiencing an 11% surge in formally registered limited companies in the first quarter of 2024. The great start to 2024 reflects the sector's resilience and growth, despite economic uncertainties. While there's plenty of optimism, challenges like high borrowing rates and inflation uncertainties persist. However, with stable interest rates and growing business confidence, the tech sector is poised for further growth. Investing time and resources into innovation will be crucial for driving future success. In my experience, having worked in this sector for decades, collaboration has always been a huge driver of success, so my advice to those new players in the game, is to embrace collaboration in the UK tech ecosystem - it's essential for success in the fast-paced and dynamic industry! #Tech #Industry #Collaboration #ThoughtLeader #Technology

Good to see the PM support both a free press and a paid press. Proof will be in how skilfully the govt can balance a) making the UK an AI growth centre as per the recent Industrial Strategy (which requires good relations with the major platforms) vs b) helping support journalistic protections for copyright (which they will resist) Encouraging words today though.

This morning we had a delightful discourse.  Andrew Rice ventured over from France and we launched his new book at #TheAnthologist in Gresham Street, in the heart of the #CityOfLondon. I was particularly impressed by his presentation that took the audience on a journey into the world of #AI and #Cybersecurity as he then proceeded to explain some of the more advanced nuances of AI Security for Enterprise. He covered the matrix of regulations, standards, processes and tools that extend to AI Systems and while AI can be used to compromise security, how the tools and the experts are continually rising to the threats. Whenever I spend time with top security people one on one, I learn new things about the world around us. One of the side chats Andrew and I had was the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge.  Like many, I had my views and had those challenged by the theories that it was a cyber attack. Andrew knows cyber and maritime extremely well.  He explained why it was wasn’t cyber.  Pure systems failure on board. The conversation over breakfast afterwards was primed by Andrew's briefing, but was one of those rare times when people are sharing some profound experiences and the topics just naturally unfold. Everyone being heard and genuinely contributing a unique perspective. Our motto for Kegai events (which are focussed on Enterprise Generative AI) is "everyone brings their piece of the jigsaw". We certainly got to see new distinctions and insights as a result of the jigsaw pieces this morning. I have huge respect for Andrew.  He came from France for Kegai's Jan 31 event (that was news to me); wrote this book in the intervening months and returned across the English Channel for today’s book launch.   He has taken the topic of AI Security for Enterprise and brought all of his 28 years of Cybersecurity expertise to simplify things for enthusiasts and professionals to get their heads around a complex topic. When it comes to policies around AI, companies should consider taking an extension of your existing security, privacy, cybersecurity policies because these contain the mission and values of your organisation and they can be built on to incorporate AI. One of the topics Andrew and I discussed on our way to Liverpool Street station afterwards was the similarity in the work we are doing and how important it is for organisations to get AI Policies in place that are right sized and fit for purpose.
