What’s the best bit about being a Vistage member? Is it the brilliant and varied expert speakers we have? Or is it the wise guidance of the Vistage chair( I couldn’t possibly comment!) Actually most experienced members say the top value they get is from each other. It’s rare ( never happened in my 24 years) that a challenge is raised that someone in the room hasn’t got some experience of. Also because I aim for diversity in every way, we get a great variety of experiences and perspectives. Most issues we explore will have up to twelve leaders working to support the issue raiser. It’s just the best feeling getting to meet clients in person and strategise in the sunshine 🙌. Settings can have such an impact on our energy and how we feel. Getting clients out of their usual spaces can help them to work ON their business rather than working in their business and take a new perspective. In this hugely productive session I’ve helped Sarah map out her focus in her business for each month up until the end of the year. So no more wondering what to focus on. We have developed her client attraction strategy to ensure she has a constant pipeline of clients coming into her business going forwards, reducing the peaks & troughs. Sarah commented how just knowing she has a plan has reduced her stress levels immediately. We have crafted a clear action plan for the next 90 days to enable her to develop her business further which I will be keeping her accountable to 😉. In small businesses we can do so so much, so much so we becoming overwhelmed with how much we could do. Knowing what to focus on and will have the biggest return on investment in terms of your time and energy. I am very lucky to live near Swinton Estate and for my local clients we regularly meet here. Beautiful terraces for the summer & cosy luxurious lounges for cream teas in the winter. Building, championing and cheerleading women in business is where I find my joy, purpose, passion, my reason why. There’s still so many conversations we need to have around women in business, around women leaving the workplace through lack of support, around the power of allyship, community and sponsorship. And there’s much we can do for ourselves; our self-leadership, to look at our mindset, how we show up, stepping into the power of our personal brand and where we can holding space for others to progress, promote and where we can gift ourselves the time for our own personal and professional development. Great to meet Edward Ephraim at today's Gatwick Diamond Business meeting, and his great question: "What's the main theme that you see in your business coaching work?". Hmm. Interesting. There's no one theme, but three do come up again and again more often than the rest. Number One: when I'm working with teams - management teams or operational teams or across the threshold where the two meet - it's communication. Almost never about the *content* of communication, almost always about communication *style*. I regularly see people with great skills, shared beliefs and values and (at least to start with) great respect for each other experiencing breakdown in professional and personal relationships because they have different communication styles. Catch it early and it's just a healthy rupture-and-repair cycle, and the repair process makes the relationship stronger than ever. Catch it too late and the damage can be too deeply entrenched and sometimes the best you can hope for is more-or-less benign toleration. And if neither party is willing to experiment with adapting their communication style (because, obvs, it's the other guy needs to do that) then all hell can break loose and it's a parting of the ways (Surely this never happens in personal relationships too 🤔 🙄 ? Discuss). Number Two: when I'm working with solo business owners, the most common theme is getting stuff done. Not the client stuff - that's always the top priority - or the easy-and-fun, illusion-of-progress stuff, it's the stuff that will *genuinely* grow the business and make next year better than this year. Michael Gerber coined that phrase more than three decades ago and it's a real issue, especially for solo business owners: most know it's a thing but few consistently do it! Which is why so many are in the feast-and-famine cycle. Number Three: Whoever I'm working with there is almost universally a challenge around clarity. Clarity of options. Clarity of priorities. Clarity of symptoms. Clarity of diagnosis. Clarity of outcome. Clarity of action. Clarity of resources. Clarity of measurement. The list goes on. Which means, I guess, that the first challenge is to get clear about where the clarity is lacking! Your thoughts? I frequently walk into these big meetings feeling 'oh no, here we go again' when I see a crowd of anonymous backs, but I almost always come away feeling inspired, entertained and educated. Note to self, though: take more selfies to make posts more interesting 🤦‍♂️ ! xx
