Skills shortages, sustainability and women’s PPE cited by health and safety professionals as key areas of focus A new report has highlighted skills shortages, sustainability and a lack of women’s PPE as key areas to focus on in the UK health and safety sector. The 2024 Environment, Health and Safety industry report called Striving for Excellence revealed 82% of respondents agreed, or strongly agreed, with the statement that more needs to be done to ensure #PPE is suitable for women in terms of better fit, sizes and suitability – but only 1% cited it as an important buying factor. #healthandsafety https://lnkd.in/gcQ-QsYe

Do I need a policy? 🤔 A sobering reminder from recent HSE enforcement: A UK manufacturing firm recently faced prosecution after a serious machinery incident. The root cause? No written health and safety policy. Let's be clear: If you have 5+ employees, a written H&S policy isn't optional - it's the law. This company learned the hard way that policies aren't just paperwork. Without one: ❌ They had no framework for risk assessments ❌ Training was inadequate 🤕 An employee suffered serious injuries 🚨 Legal consequences followed The cost of compliance is always less than the cost of non-compliance. ❓ The question isn't "Do I need a policy?" 🆘 It's "Can I afford not to have one?" #HealthAndSafety #WorkplaceSafety #HSE #RiskManagement #UKBusiness #Manufacturing

The latest HSE bulletin arrived in my inbox yesterday and not only does it highlight some dreadful injuries to workers but also the significant levels of fines companies can face for allowing them to happen. Stop and take a moment to look at the journey to the HASAW. This is a considerate piece by IOSH and so it should be. The Act has meant more men and women have gone home safely over the past 50 years, more kids have parents around. It has, for the large part, kept employers 'honest'. But, it must be recognised that 'bloody 'ealthnsafety' is almost despised by the very folk it is protecting, because it is often seen to get in the way of work and enjoying work. Health & Safety has a PR problem. As someone who is quite recently working more and more with Health & Safety Professionals, I am truly in awe of their knowledge, care and passion for keeping their colleagues and the public safe. Most of their leaders are the same, because a safe organisation has a better chance of being productive too. As we move forward, the 'Health' part is likely to gain more focus and I hope that we can all work towards a working world of zero harm and that this becomes enjoyable. #hse #digitallearning

No Falls Week: Promoting Safety at Work At Hutchinson, we take safety seriously. We’re proud to actively support #NoFallsWeek which runs this week from the 13-17th May. Falls from height are consistently the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK. The latest figures from the HSE show that 40 people lost their lives due to a fall from height in 2022-2023. Falls from height were responsible for 30% of all workplace deaths. This week we are running a series of initiatives for staff including Toolbox Talks and training sessions, highlighting safe practices when working at height. These sessions equip our staff with practical knowledge on fall prevention, hazard identification, and proper use of safety equipment. Through raising awareness and providing training we can create and maintain a culture of vigilance, making everyone’s safety at work a priority. #NoFallsWeek #SafetyFirst #WorkplaceSafety

The unquestionable value of investing intelligently in safety, health and wellbeing was laid out brilliantly by our speakers at EHS Congress London today. Dee Arp spoke about the investment in leadership skills. On change management, Gill Kernick and James Pomeroy urged us to spend time to enquire, reflect and debate. Our morning panel discussed strategies for making safety leadership palpable to every employee. Create a learning culture to keep people safe, said Paul Davison. Tim Walsh presented the impact of safety training, funded by One Percent Safer, on a rapidly growing town in Ethiopia. Al Hocking gave us insights on how #EHS functions can adapt to a rapidly changing world of work. Former COO David Bryson revealed the transformative effect in leadership of prioritising learning over punishment, of understanding over blame. Richard Hulland gave us a fabulous case study in Veolia of employee empowerment. Dr Leandro Herrero captivated with his ground-breaking methodology Viral Change, that harnesses peer-to-peer influence, storytelling and 'backstage leadership'. Our afternoon panel debated how we can measure the results of wellbeing initiatives at work. Dr Judith Grant honed our focus on the economics of wellbeing. Alastair Davey and Lisa Adams-Davey explored the impact of storytelling in safety. And Hugo Metcalfe wrapped up Day 1 with a powerful reminder that small things can make a difference in creating a wellbeing culture.
