“Jason was a very critical recruitment effort on my part. I needed to hire a manager I thought could solidly build a business and presence in Australia over time. In his first full year on board, he grew that business substantially. His knowledge of sales, the team he hired, familiarity with the Australian and Asia Pacific markets, and sense of humor have all been much appreciated. He would be an asset to any organization.”

How do you measure productivity in workplace design?
Manufacturing has led the way in capturing data on productivity ever since the first industrial revolution. But manufacturing has spent some 250 years in not being great at correlating this data captured from making stuff with the qualitative feedback from the frontline worker. In fact, you could argue that most qualitative feedback from frontline workers takes the form of industrial action! Workplace design for blue-collar workers is often about SHE. But there is a distinct opportunity to further link the baseline metrics on worker effort with the subjective experience from the frontline to better drive productivity. In short, make it easier for people to do their job well - whether they are in an office or down a mine or in a factory.

How can flexible work arrangements reduce operational costs and environmental impact?
It's worth considering the distinctions between white collar and blue collar workers in planning Flexible Work Agreements. In Manufacturing especially, there is a risk of alienating workers. The pandemic showed how economies relied upon the blue collar workforce ("key workers"), who had the same needs for flexible working as their colleagues in office-based roles. How to solve for this is of course complex, but is possible through innovations in workforce planning - how tasks are executed on the factory floor, how knowledge is captured in the moment (for efficient task execution, as well as for shift handovers), and for generating insights to help drive the planning process and continuous improvement.
