I first wrote on the subject of a coming “convergence” of internal and external communication more than 10 years ago.  It keeps coming up, like it did in Sophie Drummond’s piece titled "Rest In Peace, Internal Communication" in the newly resurrected EACD publication, Communication Directors Magazine (link in comments). Sophie makes a lot of solid points.  I don’t disagree, but I bristle at the idea that it’s internal communication that needs to be subsumed into external communication, a conclusion some might jump to if skimming her piece.  In fact, I’d argue the opposite, that internal communication should be seen as a fundamental driver of external communication - and as a discipline with its own distinct dynamics and leverage. Nevertheless, it’s also long overdue for today’s #internalcomms practitioners to get their heads around why the distinction between internal and external comms is becoming more permeable - and a lot more dynamic. The amazing Big Give's Christmas Challenge has become the UK’s biggest public fundraising campaign in 2024 after raising a record-breaking £44.7 million in just one week. It's been a privilege to work on the comms for this campaign with the Big Give team, and I want to thank HELLO! Magazine for being our official media partner, and providing unstinting support in print and online, as well as many other outlets who covered the campaign including Daily Express, LBC, Times Radio and ITV's Lorraine Kelly. If you don't know Big Give, its premise is a very simple one. Any public donations made during its campaigns to participating charities are doubled, thanks to match funding provided by generous funding champions - philanthropists, companies and foundations. This year, 1,267 different charities big and small took part. The total raised marks a remarkable 35% increase from last year’s total of £33 million, and means the Christmas Challenge is now bigger than better-known appeals like Comic Relief and Children in Need. The campaign, which closed today, attracted over 119,000 donations from the public, with 74% of participating charities meeting or exceeding their fundraising targets and 95% of all available match funds being utilised.   This amount raised is particularly notable given the ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis, which has placed additional strain on donors and charities alike. https://lnkd.in/dZxt5GQr In today's 'Inside Politics' newsletter the FT's Stephen Bush (who is always worth reading) focuses on the latest OFCOM report which notes that, for the first time ever, social media have overtaken TV (marginally) as the principal place from which Brits get their news (and I guess, consistent with this, some of you are hearing it for the first time from this social media post!). But the really interesting point is that the switchover has not changed the base source which remains the BBC (as it does for radio). Furthermore, this is the case irrespective of how people vote (which I find more surprising). Mr Bush's conclusions are as follows: "The first is that the BBC is going to continue to be far and away the most important single media organisation for shaping elections and getting a party’s message across for some time. The second is that the UK is incredibly fortunate to have it: its dominant presence across the country’s different political tribes means that we can, at least, have a decent number of agreed facts even if we don’t have many agreed conclusions." What he doesn't add, but I shall, is that this is an interesting contrast with the United States from which I shall leave you to draw your own conclusions.

After a couple of years of research and consultation, the new CAP guidelines on podcast advertising are here... https://lnkd.in/eak3XU_a Set to fully take effect from 16th August, all advertising communications within a podcast must now feature clear signposting to make them obviously identifiable as such. The ASA suggests the use of terms such as 'This is an advertisement for...' or 'our sponsor today is...', although it's not an exhaustive list and they will take into account the full context of an ad when considering if it has breached the code. Sound effects and clearly marked breaks from the main content are also suggested as ways to clearly distinguish commercial content from editorial. Interestingly, for video podcasters, it highlights the need to ensure that host reads included within the video version of a podcast should adhere to the relevant CAP guidelines for that medium. How have you been handling commercial signposting until now? Does this actually change anything?

Do you believe X, formerly known as Twitter, is a net benefit or net cost to society? The Guardian media group have taken a view: Yesterday we announced that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X (formerly Twitter). We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives and that resources could be better used promoting our content elsewhere. This is something we have been considering for a while given the often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform. The US presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time: that X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse. X users will still be able to share our articles, and the nature of live news reporting means we will still occasionally embed content from X within our article pages. Our reporters will also be able to carry on using the site for newsgathering purposes, just as they use other social networks in which we don’t officially engage. Social media can be an important tool for news organisations and help us to reach new audiences but, at this point, X now plays a diminished role in promoting our work. Our journalism is available and open to all on our website and we would prefer people to come to theguardian.comand support our work there. Exclusive for The Independent: Nigel Farage could boost Reform UK's projected seats, up to four possible wins from yesterday's zero, says YouGov's Patrick English. YouGov's previous MRP projections showed Reform winning no seats across the UK, just hours before Farage's shock announcement that he would run as a candidate in Clacton and take over as party leader. Farage could boost campaign chances in Clacton, says YouGov, but also in Ashfield, Boston and Skegness, and South Yorkshire. "We don't really have a replacement for X yet" Kind of... Bluesky is similar to Twitter 10 years ago, but it's quickly improving - there's even a Tweetdeck look-alike made in Brazil that's quite good. There's still a lot of ground to cover, but I do believe it could be a decent replacement. But two things here: No network is like the previous one, even if similar of sorts. We'll always have to adapt. We did in in Brazil when we stopped using Orkut and migrated to Facebook. Also, for any network to replace X we need people. Millions of Brazilians flocked to Bluesky, but few foreign accounts are there, so once X is back in Brazil I'm not sure people will just say "well, I don't care abut X." It's all a matter of people actually migrating. But as you said, we, journalists, can't just quit Twitter. To follow the genocide in Gaza and the future genocide in Lebanon we still need X. To follow many relevant accounts, particularly on geopolitics, we still need X. If we want an alternative to X, we need mass migration to Bluesky. But why Bluesky? Because Threads not only does not have a chronological timeline, being a complete mess, but it also engages through hate. It's the same logic of X. So it's not an alternative. It'll soon be filled with nazi speech just like X - plus countless profiles I couldn't care less, but are actively recommended to me to the point I can barely see what people I actually follow post. Mastodon is for nerds. I'm not saying it as a bad thing, but it's just not good enough for the regular user. In the future I'd love to see interoperability between Mastodon and Bluesky (it's possible, there are already some initiatives to link both ecosystems, but still needs work) and, above all, new ways to use Bluesky's ecosystem based on the principle of interoperability - something the EU should foster more. #Euinfluencer #Bluesky #Twitter #X #SocialMedia #Network #Interoperability #Politics #Speech #EU

Interesting to see in the Financial Times, Meg Hillier, Treasury Select Committee shining a spotlight on social media ‘finfluencers.’ However financial literacy remains worryingly low in the UK, and platforms like TikTok can play a crucial role in reaching new audiences. When done responsibly, 'good' finfluencers have the potential to make a real difference.
