The headlines on Ofcom's latest consumer research have focused on the demise of linear broadcast viewing by younger demographics, but another interesting finding is the strong growth in viewing of those same broadcasters' video-on-demand platforms (so-called BVoD). According to Barb Audiences data, overall viewing of BVoD services grew an impressive 29% in 2023 to 20 mins per person per day, raising the proportion of total broadcaster viewing coming from BVoD services to 13%, up from 10% in 2022. The BBC leads the way with 18% of its content now being viewed on iPlayer. And there was even a positive trend amongst the 16-24 yr age group who increased their viewing of BVoD services in 2023 by 9% to 12 mins per day. Overall, however, this positive streaming story does not compensate for the decline in linear broadcast viewing for BBC, ITV, Channel 4, or Channel 5; Sky bucked the trend with increased linear & streamed viewing.

Freely - broadcaster alliance service launches in the UK Everyone TV has launched a new free TV service for the UK it has "the backing of BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 and is available through the next generation of smart TVs now on sale in stores and online. Live TV channels can be streamed alongside on demand content, offering viewers and broadcasters a pathway to the end of the dish or TV aerial, should they choose to do so." "It’s the first time four of Britain’s public service broadcasters have come together to launch a streaming proposition, signalling the beginning of a journey to secure the future of free TV through collaboration. The partners have previously worked together on the DTT platform Freeview and satellite-delivered Freesat." “The launch of Freely is a historic moment for UK television. Collaboration between the UK PSBs is critical to connecting and protecting all audiences as we transition towards the streaming era – and delivering live TV over broadband for free is a ground-breaking innovation that will futureproof public service broadcasting,” said Kieran Clifton, Director, BBC Distribution & Business Development. Just as posted yesterday with the SES and Intelsat merger/takeover, the future of the #tvindustry lies in alliances. This is especially true when it comes to legacy companies or legacy services. It's no secret that TV operators and channels have been thoroughly disrupted by SVOD platforms. So far, the response by the channels has been divided, ITV launching its own platform, BBC investing in iPlayer etc. Now it seems, they are coming together to move the TV services to streaming, and present a united front of UK PSBs and bring the services together. I'm certainly biased, but between them, I believe the UK PSBs have some of the best content for the UK and the world. It's sad to see that people, especially younger generations turning away from the UK PSBs in favour of the USA global SVOD platforms. Partly its due to the fact that the PSBs didn't have a great position on #streamingplatforms will this change now? Is it just in time or too late? I think depending on how it's marketed, I think it can be a success. It's already gaining tract by partnerships with #connectedtv providers. "Hisense, previously announced as the first Freely smart TV partner, brings Freely TVs to market today. TVs will be available in stores across the UK and online at retailers such as Currys, Argos, AO and Very. It has also been announced today that TiVo will be offering Freely as part of its TiVo OS platform." I also think the Department for Culture, Media and Sport needs to step in and regulate where the PSBs are positioned, a special button on controls for #smarttv sets amongst other measures. Channel 4 in UK announcing strong growth numbers in viewing on their digital platform. Would be interesting to know what kind of revenue this contributes for Channel 4? I am assuming that the linear "sterling" is bit more still than the digital? Good news or bad news - TV no longer the single main source of news In the #UK "#Television is no longer the single main source of news for UK adults, as Ofcom research shows online sites and apps are now as popular as TV news for the first time." Whether this is good or bad, it is undoubtably inevitable. The internet opened up the world of news and made other non-mainstream media sources available at the click of a button. That has huge positives. Alternative media has different takes, different focuses that traditional media, looks at details that mainstream television news doesn't highlight. Depending on the type of news, it can really enrich and compliment understanding of the world. However, the obvious negatives is that fake news floods the zone, people are ciphoned into their own bubbles of what is real and what is fake. People can tailor the news to their own biases and interest, and that is causing a schism in societies. All these changes underscore the importance of #publicservicemedia in the ever-changing media landscape. The importance of having impartial and fact-based media in a divided newscape is so important. Corporate media has business interests, and online independent media varies in quality enormously. It's important for PSBs to embrace this change and ensure that they are not just present or considered a TV-only news source, but be across all platforms. In the UK "Public service broadcasters (#PSBs) remain an important way to access news. BBC One remains the most popular individual news source, while news across all BBC platforms (TV, radio, news website, Sounds and iPlayer) still reaches 68% of all UK adults. ITV1 is the second most popular individual news source." "Online news sources – and social media platforms in particular – are rated much less favourably than traditional platforms such as TV and radio for accuracy, trust and impartiality....Audiences still consider ‘trusted and accurate UK news’ as the most important societal feature of public service media (PSM), with nearly half of respondents (49%) ranking it among the top three attributes...PSBs, on the whole, consistently deliver well in this area, with 63% of respondents rating PSB news as ‘trusted and accurate’." In summary, the moves to online news is inevitable. Some independent media is great, and a great benefit to that, but others are a danger to understanding of truth and facts. In the battle to establish truth and facts, the public service media, with the mission to inform, has to lead the way and reach audiences where they are. They require support from governments to continue to offer this vital service. Canal Plus celebrates its 40th birthday today, so its an important time to reflect on its impact. Canal Plus has been at the forefront of Pay TV in Europe, launching on 4th November 1984 and introducing a 'scrambled' subscription TV service. That's just 2 years after the launch of the UK's 'Channel 4' and almost 5 years before the launch of Sky in the UK (February 5th 1989). Channel 4 is an important reference, not just chronologically, but also for brand and content since both Channel 4 and Canal Plus still share similar DNA. Both arrived with highly distinctive on-air brand identities and positioned themselves as distruptors and innovators, challenging the status-quo and providing a space for groundbreaking, avant garde programming. Canal Plus has also been a technical pioneer, launching digital satellite TV in April 1996, 2 years before the launch of Sky Digital. Canal Plus' interactive 'Mediahighway' STBs offered exceptional video and audio quality for the time (Canal Plus has never skimped on video bitrates) and included a modem connection and bank card reader for impulse Pay-Per-View and two-way services. Long before the launch of Sky Digital, French homes could access an electronic programme guide, digital radio services, purchase products through the set-top box, enter competitions and access local weather reports. Although Canal Plus' personal video recorder appeared a little later than Sky+, the 'Pilotime' had a highly distinctive remote and UI which felt years ahead of the competition. As French telcos began to invest in IPTV, Canal Plus doubled-down on its content investments and made sure its services were available across a wider variety of platforms including IPTV, DTT and streaming. It also grew its business internationally into Poland, Sub-Saharan Africa, Vietnam, Myanmar etc. Yet, what many Pay TV operators have failed to adopt is the strategy it uses to maintain a daily dialogue with both subscribers and non-subscribers through its distinctive 'en-clair' (free-to-view) programming: Daily topical and satirical magazine formats which have tracked the major shifts in culture over the past 40 years. These free windows allowed the business to showcase the celebrities, sports stars, actors and directors in the films, series and sporting events behind its pay-wall in a way that was far more effective than a 30 second TV commercial, with this programming playing a significant role in the cultural history of all French TV viewers. Today, with its online presence and the low-cost 'TV+' service (€2 a month) Canal Plus retains an emotional connection with prospective and existing customers. As Canal Plus reaches into more and more territories around the world, it remains a highly distinctive brand and content creator which has had, and continues to have a huge impact on the shape of our industry. Everyone TV partners with TV sets - but government could help more "Everyone TV – the organisation leading the evolution of free TV in the UK – has revealed multiple new #smartTV brands are joining the Freely line-up with Toshiba, Sharp, Panasonic and Metz all confirmed to offer the new streaming service backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The addition of these four new brands means Freely has confirmed six smart TV partners in total. Existing partners include Bush and Hisense, with Freely currently accessible on their 2024 4K smart TV models." Freely is the amalgamation of the UK #publicservice #broadcasters content, although its not clear whether there's only a selection of content found on the #psbs or whether everything you can find on their own #streamingplatforms you can find on Freely too. However, it's already making a mark that they've got agreements with big Smart TV manufacturers. It doesn't seem though that there will yet be an Freely button, rather just an app built into the home screen. However, amongst the brands that have made an agreement with Everyone TV, there are some big omissions, Samsung TV, LG, Roku, Amazon, Google etc. What share of the market do these companies have vs the one that have taken on Freely? It's clear that a majority of smart TV's won't have Freely. Here's where the government in the UK, or a future government via the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, could step in. It could mandate that public service media has prominence on the home screens. It could even mandate a button on controls that would massively increase recognition of Freely and UK public service media, giving them a much needed boost in the fight for relevance against the global streamers. While traditional #lineartv remains relevant, the traditional advantage that psbs had was the primacy on the EPG to always appear at the top. No matter what TV or set-top box, unencrypted or #paytv you would always see BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5. In the world of #streamingmedia, there is no such requirement or equivalent. The government is playing catchup in many areas, and to support the burgeoning UK creative sector, they need prominence as they have on linear. Government has not supported the psbs enough on this, and it should be top of the list of the DCMS to help psbs. “The UK recorded music industry grew for the ninth consecutive year in 2023, bringing in £1.43 billion. Streaming and physical music saw growth, and the independent sector also enjoyed an increased share of album sales and streams. This is all according to a new stats pack from BPI The BPI has published its annual ‘All About The Music’ report on the British record industry's performance in the previous calendar year. The topline stat is that revenues grew by 8.1% in 2023 to £1.43 billion. That’s the ninth consecutive year of growth. According to the record industry trade group’s stats pack, more than half of that (58%) came from subscription streaming, sync and public performance combined contributed 13.6%, vinyl sales 9.9%, ad-funded audio and video streams 9.5%, and CDs 6.8%. Physical media actually saw stronger percentage growth than streaming last year, with CDs, vinyl and other formats all up individually, and collectively up 12.8% on 2022 - vinyl seeing the biggest jump, up 18.6% year-on-year. Streaming overall saw revenues rise by 8.4%, with ad-funded streaming growing fastest at 12.4%. In terms of actual revenues, physical brought in £243.4 million, while streaming generated £962.1 million. In terms of what people were listening to, Miley Cyrus came out top with her song ‘Flowers’, which enjoyed ten consecutive weeks at number one in the UK singles chart. This run helped female artists to score a record tally of weeks at the top of the UK top 40 - 31 out of 52 weeks. Very good insight! I agree, the landscape is shifting. Adapt or die. As a TV and movie production company we can align with the streaming platforms, and with half a dozen companies reach HALF of the entire world's population. By doing so we can also control our own destiny and costs. That is alluring. The media distribution marketplace will dramatically change in the next 36 months. Is there a place for cinema, theatres, streaming, and other alternative delivery methods to co-exist? Time will tell, we all adapt, we all evolve, that is the nature of business. Here is a prelude of things to come...

Sky goes full in on #streaming "Sky in the UK is to launch a new sports streaming offering, Sky Sports+, that will be integrated into Sky TV, streaming service Now and a revamped Sky Sports mobile app. Launching this August, Sky Sports+ will offer a much broader range of sporting content via concurrent live streams, the mobile app and a dedicated new channel, at no extra cost to subscribers, according to Sky." This will start like most other SVOD platforms, in alliance with the #paytv side, the big difference here is that the pay-tv partner is Sky's main business. It clearly doesn't want to cannibalise its business, and so its offering it for free to its subscribers. "Customers with a full Sky Sports subscription will have immediate access to Sky Sports+ across Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and Now. As part of the Sky Sports+ launch, Now members will also be able to pause and rewind live sports content for the first time." How will it outreach to non-subscribers? And, will this influence a slow migration away from Sky's #traditionaltv platform? The platform offers more than what Sky's pay-tv platform currently offers, allowing "Sky Sports+ will have the capability to show up to 100 live events via concurrent streams, while a dedicated Sky Sports+ linear channel will showcase a selection of the best live sport, according to the pay TV broadcaster." It will also offer more football matches "the launch of Sky Sports+ coincides with the start of a new long-term partnership with the English Football League (EFL), with over 1,000 EFL games a season featuring every team more than 20 times, and every Championship club on at least 24 occasions." I wonder if this includes the blackout games, those games in the UK blacked out to promote going to stadiums to watch games. If so, that could be a real game-changer. Now, it seems Sky is shifting away from Pay TV. It won't be immediate, it's not pushing its clients at all in any direction, its trying to facilitate convenience for existing legacy clients, as well as innovation for them and new clients.
