One of our Top investment banking clients is looking for those who want to make a move into an established team and carve a career in compliance monitoring. The market has proved challenging for candidates this year, fewer opportunities and increased competition. When the market is like this, you’ll hear me say, “the apple can’t fall too far from the tree”. To remain competitive you need to choose jobs that align to your recent experience to be seen. Many of my peers in the UK private equity market will have felt the vast difference in activity this year compared to 2023. Fortunatley for many of the talented candidates in this space that’s started to provide results. For those who haven’t yet felt the change in pace, although the market is still sending mixed signals the future looks bright. Here are some of my key takeaways that might help paint a clearer picture: Increased activity in large-cap buyouts accounting for over 59% of deals in H1 2024. Fundraising is also on track for a record year, driven by larger funds, although exits are lagging due to market volatility and extended holding periods (Source - Pitchbook) The mid-market saw an 11% decline in deals, with international buyers, particularly from the US, remaining active. It was reported that they expect stablilty to drive more robust deal activity in H2 2024 (Source - KPMG) With challenging debt markets, private equity firms are increasingly underwriting deals with equity, securing financing later in the process (Source - Chambers & Partners). Firms face growing pressure to deliver exits during market uncertainty, driving a focus on operational improvements to maximize returns (Source - RSM UK). In summary, the UK PE market is rebounding, but with caution and with a focus on very strategic plays. As someone who focuses in interim value creation & transformation I’m seeing that as a great thing medium term - more focus on defining clear and actionable VCPs, taking control of commercial and operational enhancements and synergies through integration post M&A. #ukprivateequity #privateequity #investing #mergersandacquisitions

Our Employment Market Update and Career Insights discussed a number of themes, including 🔹 Current market conditions and salaries for investment professionals. 🔹 Nationally Banking and Finance Job ads are nearing the lows of COVID in 2020 while candidates’ applications have increased significantly. 🔹 Despite the lack of demand and increased supply there remains a lack of quality candidates for most specialised investment positions. Salaries have not decreased. 🔹 Demand remains strong for a number of positions but other parts of the market remain very constrained. 🔹 The majority of our clients are still highly focused on gender diversity.  🔹 There is increasing evidence that the “pendulum” has swung back to employers with work flexibility reduced in several instances. Leading banking, investment, and technology leaders anounce its "Time to invest in Britain" as £63 BILLION of investment is promised! At Monday's International Investment Summit, more than a dozen bosses at the world's largest banks, PE firms, insurers and tech giants have signalled their optimism in the future of the British economy. Senior leaders at Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, Citi, KKR, Blackstone, Aviva and Legal & General were all present at the event and signatories on a statement backing Britain's educational system, history and economy, stating; “As global investors, we believe that there is a very real opportunity for the UK to grow its economy by attracting international investment." Britain’s educational establishments, legal system, financial services sector and language form the bedrock of a strong investment proposition. Technological developments, advances in the energy system and greater freedom in capital flows have further enhanced Britain’s position. With greater stability, its attractiveness is increased even further. We are optimistic about the future of the economy, and believe it is time to invest in Britain." The summit also marking the announcement of £63bn of investment from a range of investors creating the best part of 38,000 jobs. With UK business confidence at a nine-year high according to Lloyds Bank's latest Business Barometer, at a 45% YTD average (well above the long-term average of 29%!), UK inflation expected to fall below the 2% target for the first time in 3 years, and further rate cuts looking likely to end the year... is the UK economy set to turn the corner? Market Update for Technologists (and a little bit of preaching) x2 Major Banks have internally announced 20k-30k job cuts by 2025 (next year!) (heard direct from x2 contacts in the know - discrete for that reason) No steer on who will be affected - the cuts will be to become 'less manual' - embracing AI / ML / Automation across all business lines. Meanwhile - Hedge Funds continue to want three skillsets in one across all hiring Eg: currently working a Tech PM role for a big shop - they need a PM, BA, Product Lead who was an engineer and understands Microservices to a deep level, whilst also having exceptional academics in compsci or similar from a top institution and able to function in an FO Quant Tech environment. Now some will say they are asking for too much and won't find it. I can tell you that you're wrong. I would say that the market is shifting around us all right now - if you have a 'traditional' skillset of doing one job only and most comfortable hiding in a big team doing the minimum, you likely will be laid off in the next 2 years. Unfortunately that's where we are. This is the time to upskill. Everyone is pushing to become leaner and more agile. Make yourself valuable If you're a technologist in a bigger firm who wants to join a culture of innovation and growth - HMU
