What do you do if you're struggling to meet deadlines in Global Talent Acquisition?
I’ve worked in global TA for 25 years. The only reason to miss deadlines is if you have planned badly. Plan: - start with a workforce plan. What people do you need, where and when? - understand your tech stack. How will you manage the process from mapping to onboarding? You need tech. - understand talent availability and cost using a talent mapping process. There’s no point trying to hire people that don’t exist or that you can’t afford. - build an attraction plan. Why would they join you? - build an outreach and engagement plan. - build an assessment and onboarding plan. - put sensible timeframes to it all and manage stakeholder exceptions. Lots to do, so consider a strategic partner like Retinue.

You’re considering a career in HR consulting. What do you need to know?
Over the last 24 yrs I have worked with HR teams and leaders. - Get a qualification as early as you can. Professional education is important. Something like CIPD. - Don’t expect HR to be rainbows & unicorns. You will spend as much, if not more time dealing with under performance issues, worker exits and redundancies. If you aren’t ready for the unhappy stuff, don’t do it. - HR people have to be tech savvy. Enterprise HR systems are complicated and complex. You’ll need to run reports and keep your data clean. - HR people have to be up to date with the “laws of work” so every day will be a school day! Tax laws, employment law, accountancy rules… - Remember your workers are not all perm! You’ll need to manage your contingent workforce as well.

You’re a recruiter looking to hire the best talent. How do you make sure you stand out from the competition?
Be authentic. Beyond candidate mapping, throw automation in the bin, for good. Generic, blanket and/or robot generated engagement and messaging is useless. Use only carefully created outreach designed for each potential candidate. Don't have enough time? Then you are trying to do too much and you won't have an impact. Fewer, more targeted and personal outreach messages will hit the spot quicker and harder than anything that can be done at scale through cutting corners.
