SHELTERING Children from Hostilities As hostilities break, parties to a conflict may establish hospitals and safety zones and localities to protect wounded, sick, and aged persons; children under fifteen; pregnant women; and mothers of children under seven (GCIV Art. 14). ▸ Protected areas and zones OCCUPIED TERRITORIES Occupying Power must facilitate proper working of all institutions devoted to the care and education of children. It may not, under any circumstances, change their personal status or enlist them in formations or organizations subordinate to it. Should the local institutions be inadequate for the purpose, the OCCUPYING Power shall make arrangements for care and education of children orphaned or separated from their parents, if possible by persons of their own nationality, language, and religion. OCCUPYING Power may not hinder the application of any preferential measures with regard to food, medical care, and protection from the effects of war for children under fifteen, expectant mothers, and mothers of children under seven (GCIV Art. 50). EVACUATION Provisions for temporary evacuation of children if compelling security reasons exist. Includes removing them from besieged or encircled areas. Such evacuation must follow precise organizational and security rules/methods so as not to jeopardize the children’s future in any way (API Art. 78, APII Art. 4.3). As an American Muslim starting my career in the financial sphere, I pray that God willing the United States of America start having more options for Sharia compliant investing, banking, and housing. I would love to be apart of Islamic finance, contributing to our Muslim communities here. What I would ask is why there isn't common options of these types of products and Islamic companies in the US? Where are the Sharia Credit Unions or bank? Where are the Islamic investment firms? Does it have to do with demand? Regulations? Lack of compatibility? As brother Hash Assad stated, this isn't something that is discriminatory or excluding the general population. I also heard that Russia has started to implement an Islamic banking system for its Muslim provinces. Are we seeing a trend towards an establishment of a world Islamic financial system? *Dimensions of Deceit* Shaykh Haytham Tamim In the opening of Surat al-Baqarah, Allah mentions three types of people: the believers, the disbelievers, and the hypocrites. Verses 8 onwards focus on the hypocrites (munafiqeen), who are discussed in thirteen verses. I will highlight some of these verses to provide a deeper understanding: _Among the people are those who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are not believers._ _They seek to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive only themselves, and they do not realise it._ _In their hearts is a disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they were liars._ _And when it is said to them, ‘Do not cause corruption on the earth,’ they say, ‘We are but reformers.’_ _Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they are unaware._ _And when it is said to them, ‘Believe as the people have believed,’ they say, ‘Shall we believe as the foolish have believed?’ Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they do not know it. [2:8-16]_ In verse 8, Allah Almighty states that hypocrites profess faith, but are actually lying. In verse 9, Allah emphasises that hypocrites seek to deceive Him, but in reality, they deceive only themselves without realising it. In the world today, we are continually seeing politicians, leaders, and those in authority mislead people for their own agendas. Allah advises us not to be part of deceit—neither by deceiving others nor by allowing ourselves to be deceived. When Allah Almighty says they do not realise they are deceiving themselves, one wonders how can someone become so deluded that they lose the ability to recognise corruption around them? They are often unaware of the deception due to several reasons: *Immersion in corruption* They are eating, drinking and breathing corruption – they are surrounded by corruption and corrupted individuals in their social circles, which makes them lose the ability to discern right from wrong. *Trust in deceptive leadership* They place their trust in deceptive leaders and rely on their misleading narratives. *Belief in their actions* They are convinced that what they are doing is right. *Blind following* They follow without thinking, awareness, or questioning, as in “We found our forefathers doing this” (referring to inherited customs) or “I only show you what I see, and I guide you only to the path of righteousness” (the words of Firaun as he misled his people). For instance, in Surah Ghafir, he says, _“Leave me to kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or cause corruption in the land.” (40:26)_ Islam combats corruption through the principle of enjoining good and forbidding evil. A LESSON FOR THE HAMAS LEADERSHIP – DON’T PUT THINGS IN WRITING Leaked messages show that the mastermind behind Hamas’s Oct 7 attacks on Israel is using the Palestinian death toll to his advantage. Correspondence between Yahya Sinwar, the terror group’s military leader, and officials brokering a ceasefire with Qatari and Egyptian officials indicate he is more interested in securing his own future than peace. “We have the Israelis right where we want them,” Sinwar said in one of dozens of messages to ceasefire negotiators. The messages display a calculated disregard for human life and a belief on the part of Sinwar that Israel has more to lose from the eight-month war than Hamas. Put simply, Sinwar is willing to put his political objectives above the preservation of human lives. In one message to Hamas leaders in Doha, he cites civilian losses in national-liberation conflicts in places such as Algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from France, saying, “these are necessary sacrifices”. In another letter, sent in April to Ismail Haniyeh, a Hamas political leader, whose three sons have died in the conflict, Sinwar said their deaths and those of other Palestinians would “infuse life into the veins of this nation, prompting it to rise to its glory and honour”. So, the deliberately engendered suffering and death of so many Palestinian civilians by Hamas are of no concern whatsoever to this awful human being; they come a very poor second to his own glorification. The important question now may be how the war ends as it will determine the political future of the Israeli and Hamas leadership. However for Sinwar, it may well determine his own physical survival. For me, and many others, his “survival” is of no concern, however the survival and prospering of the Democratic state of Israel is.
