In a nutshell, airlines based in Africa, Latin America and North America gained market share between 2018 and 2023, and North American carriers gained the most traffic share of any region during this time, expanding from 23.8% to 26.9% of total world traffic. Middle East-based carriers, amazingly, were almost flat in terms of market share, while carriers based in Asia/Pacific and Europe lost market share. The carriers which endured the biggest drops in cargo traffic included SAS, Hainan Airlines, Thai Airways, SriLankan Airlines and American Airlines. But the causes of those drops are varied.

In the wake of the recent UK General Election announcement, we echo the calls from Logistics UK for a dedicated logistics and supply chain minister. Unfortunately, I don't think inflation is going to stay around 2% for long. Many will recall that the inflation spike which hit the UK had many of its roots in freight costs as many of our consumer goods are imported. From late 2020, following the lift of lockdowns, demand spiked and rates exploded, with a 40 foot container rising from USD 1,500 to USD 17,000. Rates did fall back over time and returned to normal levels last Spring/Summer. Following the Houti attacks in the Red Sea from last December, and ship diversions around the Cape, rates rose but the longer sailing times and strong buyer demand have led to a container shortage so now a 40 foot for early June is over USD 6,000 with more rate increases expected. May-Jul is usually low season for container rates so I predict we'll soon see USD 10,000/40 (by Aug/Sep) and higher in Oct/Nov. Word to Andrew Bailey, inflation is back with a vengeance.

Air rates on the rise..... Carriers across Europe are actively cutting capacity from China; they’re just not shouting about it.! With some Direct services due to be suspended due to higher running costs BA - PEK/LHR will cease and HK/LHR will drop to one flight a day from the usual 2- VS will also cease PVG/LHR. The UK government is implementing a new Customs Declaration Service (CDS), and the June 4 deadline for exporters to switch from the older CHIEF system is fast approaching. However, according to Agency Sector Management, with less than a month away, up to a third of exporters still need to make the switch. HMRC will only grant a four-week extension in exceptional circumstances, so it’s important to make sure you’ve made the change before the cutoff date. New users also have the opportunity to take advantage of a Trader Test Environment to get comfortable with the new system before the deadline. #thefreightarchitects #jaguarfreight #logistics

A train derailment on Tuesday partially blocked intermodal services at the UK port of Felixstowe and could disrupt traffic for a week. A Felixstowe spokesperson told The Loadstar: “We can confirm that a freight train operated by GBRf suffered a derailment on the Trimley branch line at approximately 9.20pm on Tuesday.
