Delighted my article on Polyvagal theory has been published in Hypnotherapy Today, the journal for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Many books on polyvagal theory are hard to digest and understand, so I distilled the most important facts into an easy to read summary with illustrations. Understanding how the nervous system works signposts us to the most effective, safe, drug-free paths to healing. Find out how we tone and strengthen our vagus nerve to increase resilience. And how we manage anxiety, and stress, overcome fears and phobias, resolve past traumas, and even manage irritable bowel syndrome and other gut issues through the action of our vagus nerve. Philip Bromberg, on working with trauma and dissociation in psychoanalytic therapy. This is a core idea in working with clinically-significant more complex trauma and dissociation. Regardless of the type of therapy (acronym-wise) being used, this passage offers a clear idea of what may be happening in moments of internal connection. Such moments may accrue and coalesce into experiences of integration and coherent self-development. "The analyst's job is to use the enactment in a way that the patient's 'not-me' experience can be given representational meaning as a shared phenomenon by enabling a link to be made in the patient's working memory between the dissociated experience and the here-and-now self as the agent or experiencer. It begins by the 'not-me' entering the here-and-now implicitly-through an affectively disjunctive event in the analyst's internal world that is simultaneously occuring as a reciprocal phenomenon in the patient's dissociated subjectivity." - Philip M. We are often asked about the evidence base for EMDR therapy. There's an extensive evidence base out there and The EMDR Association keep a database about it. This research by Ifigeneia Mavranezouli et al (2020) showed that EMDR therapy was the most cost effective treatment for PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder). Often something that service providers are really interested in! #emdr #traumainformed #treatmentforptsd

Do me a favour, Give psychoanalysis a try. Genuinely. Christopher Bollas is a leading figure in contemporary psychoanalysis. I find his style of writing very unique and interesting. Initially seems a bit too complex but he always keeps the reader on their tip-toes. He focuses and extends a lot of Freud's works and theories, while introducing his own "idiom" to the world of psychoanalysis. Have you ever read any of his work? One of the most important things we are trying to figure out as EMDR therapists when we meet our clients is What has happened to you? In EMDR one of the most important things that we are trying to understand is what has happened to our clients that has led to them having the psychological difficulties and challenges in the here and now. We are always looking to identify the key memories that contribute to the current difficulties. Then by processing the key memories with EMDR we hope to significantly improve the current difficulties. We are not looking for anything generally that has happened to our clients but specifically what are those key things that are connected to the problems our clients have now.
