The events and entertainment industry continually changes. We know that first hand. This article did surprise me on the extent of the entertainment venue closures. Over the past four years the UK has lost 37% of its clubs, which works out at about 10 clubs closing each month, according to research by the Nighttime Industries Association. We are in an interesting time in the Live Events & Entertainment Sectors. Post-Covid more people and businesses are realising the irreplaceable value of the live experience, which is contributing to the sector remaining as one of the top growth industries in the UK despite a myriad of challenges. One of the major challenges is the dwindling pipeline of skilled and experienced workers, particularly in event production. More and more young people are turning away from the increasingly debt-laden pathways that have dominated recent narratives about the best way to get into the best jobs. Business leaders are also citing lack of real-world experience as a contributing factor to expectations mis-match between employers and recruits, and the attendant frustrations for all parties. Apprenticeships and other on-the-job training options need to be embraced as not only a viable alternative, but in some cases by far and away the ‘best option’ for creating and developing the workforce that companies need in a highly competitive jobs market. They open up doors to a far greater, passionate and diverse workforce. We need to think of it as investing in the health of our businesses. Not optional, but essential.

Starlink, once seen as the silver bullet for event internet, has now sold out in London. This isn’t just a supply issue—it signals a deeper challenge for our industry. The moving goalposts of Starlink’s terms and the unpredictable availability mean that relying on it as a primary solution is becoming risky. For events, where connectivity is critical, even the ability to connect is now in jeopardy. Don’t get me wrong, I love Starlink and what it’s done for remote connectivity including events. But I’ve always known it would be a tool in our arsenal, not the sole contender. Flexibility and resilience in our approach are more important than ever. Is it time we revisit more traditional, reliable methods of delivering internet to event sites?

Now, this is my 14th IAAPA Expo US, so here are my 14 Tips for Conference Confidence! Be sure to check out AttractionPros' "Thrival Guide" for even more great insights. 1. Do your homework - research the companies and people you want to meet so you already have talking points in hand. I've poured through every trade pub, and it's done wonders for helping me feel prepared. 2. Pack your business cards. 3. Also pack comfy shoes. I have Dr. Scholl's ballet flats I wear in between my hotel and the trade show floor. They roll up easily in my purse. Game changer. Those who wear pantyhose/nylons a) you are a brave warrior human and b) spend a few extra dollars/pounds/euros/yen on a good brand so you don't have to worry about them running/ripping. 4. Stock your hotel fridge - if you are trying to abstain or moderate your alcohol consumption, hop on over to Total Wines and grab some non-alcoholic wines, beers, and mocktails so you'll have something to take to the parties. Though I must say, props to (most) party organizers for offering and advertising teetotaler options! 5. Take photos of all your receipts as soon as you purchase something so that you don't have to wade through dozens of pieces of paper later. Save them in a folder on your phone. You and your finance manager will thank you. 6. Sleep. You don't have to close the bar (every night). 7. Eat...real (non-Dippin' Dot) food. And pack (healthy) snacks. 8. Drink...WATER. 9. Exercise all (or at least most) mornings. Find an accountability partner so you're not (down bad cryin' at the gym) alone. 10. Have a plan. Allow enough walking time between your meetings and organize your show floor trips so that you hit a specific section each time. 11. Take breaks to go outside or find a quiet corner and JUST BREATHE. 12. Don't over-program. You don't have to do all. the. things. 13. Take notes in your meetings. Then, before you go to the parties each night, take your handwritten notes and either dictate them into your phone or enter them into your CRM. 14. Have fun! Everyone will have some degree of nerves. Be flexible, be authentic, be YOU. BONUS STUDENT/NEXTGEN TIPS: Remember that companies are primarily there to sell. Thought For Thursday – ideas into reality Within the Events Industry, those people tasked with delivering experiences are generally separated into two groups – the ‘creatives’ and the ‘techies’. The former has the ideas and vision to tell a unique story; the latter brings it to life through the hardware (and software) at their disposal. Whilst visiting the PLASA Show at Olympia Events on Monday and marvelling at the amazing AV equipment on display,, it occurred to me how much more effective a storyteller would be if they fully understood the tools at their disposal. I’m not suggesting they need the knowledge of an engineer or technician; however, an awareness of what technology is available, how much it costs and what its capabilities are should help drive the creative process, not be an afterthought or add-on. Later in the day, I attended the Future Ambitions of Industry Leaders session hosted by Rick Stainton from The Power of Events. Rick was joined by Lucy Kerbel FRSA from TONIC, Mark Dakin from TAIT, Paul Jones from Ethix Management and Piers Shepperd from Wonder Works Limited . As you’d expect, lots of interesting topics were discussed, including different pathways into Events, the importance of CSR, the need to further promote DEI, and the work that’s currently being done to encourage students to see our industry as a viable career option. I particularly enjoyed the conversation between Mark and Piers that was along the same lines as my own thoughts earlier – creatives and techies shouldn’t (and often don’t) work in isolation to each other. Both made the point that those overseeing the technical side of production are actually also creatives – they get presented with a vision that they then have to interpret in their own way and turn it into a reality. They are an integral part of the design process and not merely people who connect wires, press buttons and source hardware. They have an in-depth understanding of any limitations connected with the acoustics, lighting and physical space, as well as being able to suggest new tech that could further enhance an idea. I’m aware that I’ve massively simplified the pre-event production process in this post, but hopefully you can understand what I’m trying to say. As audiences become increasingly demanding in terms of the bang-for-their-buck expectations, I suspect we’ll see further crossover between the creative and technical teams in a bid to continue pushing the experiential boundaries. In my opinion, this encourages effective collaboration and will benefit producer and consumer alike. As a final takeaway from Monday’s event, I’d like to share the link to an excellent new video produced by Adlib that showcases the lesser-known job opportunities in Live Events and explores the behind-the-scenes roles that help turn ideas into reality. Venue Sourcing // Hold on….don’t start yawning, it is not the most glamorous topic in the world but it really is one of the core elements of the business. Get the venue right, half of the heavy lifting is done before the first flight case is unpacked, the first welcome drink poured or the first guest is welcomed. Get it wrong, and it is an unpleasant uphill slog culminating in disappointment. Just SOME of the things we take into account whilst sourcing. 1) Don’t wait until you have a requirement to start sourcing, sometimes it is already too late. Always continually be scouting new and interesting locations, know what is out there, what is hot and what is not. 2) Don’t just scout the place, scout the people. I spent an amazing day with Matthew Weaving from Casa Collina - Hospitality Solutions. He had researched us and done an amazing job of understanding our needs.He did not show us anything that was not firmly up our strasse! He also introduced us to key players at the various venues and you could tell that they were exactly the kind of people you would want supporting you onsite. 3) Don’t be scared to think off-piste and look at venues that would traditionally not be in your lane. I visited The Other House in Kensington with the superb Victoria Mahoney which is a private members club. There were some spaces there that I would absolutely use for meetings, events, film shoots. This kind of venue would normally be well off the radar, but as per points 1 and 2, always be looking, always connect with the right calibre of people. Thought For Thursday – stability vs adaptability We proudly unveiled the new arm of ESMOS Recruitment this week – our Event Technology Division. Whilst we continue to support companies with their hiring needs across the full breadth of the Events Industry, we felt that #EventTech deserved its own specialised approach in recognition of the technical nature of the roles within this sub-sector. As the Head of this new department, I’m extremely excited to work with our existing event tech clients, and to form relationships with new ones, in the months ahead. As a business, it’s incredibly important to not just keep up with market patterns, but to also anticipate future trends and lead the way. Being a pioneer within your sector is what gives you a competitive edge. The ability to be agile and to adapt is invaluable - embracing new opportunities whilst exploring cutting edge tools is a prerequisite for success in today’s fast-moving society. Those who stubbornly state “We do it this way because we’ve always done it this way” will soon find themselves struggling to survive. However, something I wouldn’t advocate is change for change’s sake. If you’re considering pivoting your company in a new direction, there has to be a clear rationale behind it. For example, if you’re looking to build AI into your daily processes simply because it’s the latest cool thing to do, and it’s not going to actually bring any value to your business, you’re going to waste time and money, and risk confusing your customers, clients and employees. Yes, AI tools can be hugely beneficial, but only if they’re relevant to your specific business. Let me use a football analogy. I’m a Man Utd fan and enjoyed their dominance in my early adult life. Unfortunately, they’re now suffering from mediocrity because they didn’t incorporate strategies to maintain their success. Instead, they became complacent and assumed they’d continue to win simply because they’d done so in the past. Then along came Pep Guardiola. Pep’s innovative playing style and coaching techniques have completely changed the shape of the modern game. This, coupled with excellent player recruitment, has transformed rivals Man City into arguably the best team in the world. Such has been their success, that now every team is trying to copy them, with ball-playing defenders and possession-based football suddenly ever-present. But the problem with this is that most teams, Man Utd included, don’t have the personnel, coaching foundation or tactical acumen to master this style of play. They’re simply trying to implement something because it’s ‘cool’ rather than something that suits their own identity. The key is to strike a balance between stability and adaptability. Retain the core principles of your business whilst striving for growth in new areas and improving current processes. We see a lot here at Brushfire, and as someone dedicated to helping customers avoid pitfalls, let me share a quick story. We recently saw a new attraction struggle with ticket sales and revenue due to an inadequate system, leading to wasted time and lost revenue.
