We have people from all different parts of the globe at all different levels at the firm. Opportunities are not limited because of location or first language. It is inspiring to see people who look like one, has accent like one in senior leadership positions because that tells us that race, color, sexual orientation, location nothing is in the way if you have the skill set and talent. In this environment, it is actually difficult to feel sorry for oneself and say that I cannot do something because of any external factors...the field is open and sky is the limit if one has passion and talent. Whilst other companies are just getting on with DEI program, Citi is way ahead showing how it is done in a meaningful and truly impactful manner.

Week 22: After a tougher week for fixed income RM Funds see excellent opportunities within credit to exploit after the weakness seen post UK CPI within UK credit and fixed income. The back up in yields is now offering tremendous value for money: 5 year yields touched 3.4% on 27th Dec and at one point last week touched 4.3%. We (still)do not believe we see the wides of last year/Overall in credit we (still) favour the front end with 1 year IG offering circa 5.4% and we are u/w longer dated A & BBB credit which is offering 80-130bp over gilts. Spreads have begun to widen over recent weeks, RM Funds suspect this will continue over the coming months. Sector positive: Natgrid rights issue shows the defensive nature and size of the assets the SVS RM Infrastructure bond allocates into.

Our latest TPM Peer Roundtable last week was a great success. Attended by over 90 senior TPM leaders from 60+ financial institutions, the focus was on the industry collaboration work completed by Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group, Deutsche Bank and HSBC. This group presented the aligned materiality criteria that will be implemented across our organisations. It is a big step forward to agreeing consistent TPM standards. Many thanks to the cross-bank working group who invested their time and input to make this happen: Jane Cox, Steve Jack, Pete Stubbs, Joe Canzano, Josef Crawford, Louise Waite, Helen Truesdale and Vicky Goldsmith 26 financial institution attendees have requested the materials, with a view to looking at how this could be applied within their organisation. Looking forward, a few of the roundtable members are now discussing the next alignment topic for TPM - which is likely to be in Cyber/Info Sec. Events are being planned for the rest of the year, both online and in-person. The roundtable population has doubled in the last six months alone. If you are a financial institution and keen to join this and play an active role with collaborating on top TPM issues, then do message me directly. This is an important step taken by a large, global retail merchant (Ebay) to try to bring American Express (Amex) to the negotiating table. We benchmark and negotiate regularly with Amex on their relatively high pricing on behalf of some of the world's best known brands, and unfortunately Amex are often quite happy to continue to charge more than their global competitors because of the loyalty they've built up in their travelling customer base through rewards points. However, even when confronted with empirical evidence that they are expensive versus their payment provider peers (and so uneconomical in relative terms for their merchant clients) they tend to take what I see as a somewhat intransigent stance, and are often only moved to reconsider their pricing when threatened with withdrawal of their card altogether (as in the Ebay case). Bravo Ebay! Amazon UK did the same last year with Visa over their excessively high credit card pricing and won the day. It's sad that it comes to this, but I do really hope that all the big payment schemes take note. And perhaps more importantly other big merchants take similar action and help their smaller sized fellow-merchants, by using their considerable muscle to help shake up the market. Unless more companies take stronger steps, Amex will continue to charge more than their peers. VIsa and Mastercard have been forced to reduce their fees over the last 10 years (and this fight will continue as long as they offset their forced Interchange cuts with higher Scheme Fees - we see you guys!). I'd also raise a heads-up to the pricing colleagues at PayPal who charge vastly different rates across the world (including huge pricing differentials across the single economic union of Europe - just as V&MC used to do until brought to heel by the regulators in December 2015). My recommended approach for these behemoth payment providers to get ahead of the curve is this: it's fine to charge a fee; it's completely reasonable to cover your costs and to make a tidy profit; but there's no need for excessive price gouging, and then relying on regulators to take action (as they invariably will). Much better to collaborate reasonably now, price more fairly, more consistently and to effectively self regulate. Don't make the likes of Amazon and Ebay and the regulators take charge of your destiny. The mean of net long positions in Brent futures by the managed money category appears to have a experienced a structural shift post the pandemic, as the supply of net short positions by the “producer/user” category has been reduced. After taking this structural break into account, we find that discretionary spec investors had exhibited marked OWs in Brent oil futures in September 2023 and early April 2024, but are significantly UW currently. For copper futures, our momentum signals were very close to extreme levels around the recent peak on May 21st, suggesting the triggering of mean reversion or profit taking signals by momentum traders such as CTAs likely played a role in the subsequent retracement. Similar triggering of mean-reversion signals has likely taken place in gold futures on recent local peaks. Despite the recent retrenchment, both copper and gold futures remain in overbought territory (in contrast to Brent oil futures that look oversold).
