One (of many XDXD 😂 ) of our strong points is FLEXIBILITY. So whenever we get asked about our process we give the most hideous answer ➰ > "IT depends" On what ❓❓❓ On the client, on the team that is going to be working on that project, on the industry, on the type of needs and problems we need to solve, and of course, on the 🕜 time scope we have to do it. And another KEY point is HOW we transmit this information to all the designers that are going to be working on that specific project. When time is scarce and the project is relatively small (or at least for now) sometimes is better to work the requirement around JTBD. WHY❓ ⭕ It's easier to summarize all that we need to include at least in iteration 1. ⭕ If the client does not have all the requirements ready is easier to share the scope they are looking for in the project and what might be left to the next iteration. ⭕ It gives more creative freedom to designers to propose addons and other creative possibilities. 💡 What to know more? Stakeholder Strategies for Designing Better UX: Humane's AI Pin launched earlier this year and... they haven't had the best time with its release. Despite raising £230 million and achieving a £1 billion valuation, the wearable AI device was universally panned upon release. Prominent tech reviewer Marques Brownlee probably put it best: "This device as it exists today is hamstrung by its ideal future version of itself" The culprit behind this poor product? Poor design culture. According to reports, Humane's founders “preferred positivity over criticism”, even dismissing a senior engineer for questioning the product's readiness. This culture of avoiding negative feedback led to critical flaws being overlooked and a product that failed to meet user needs. Having a 9-figure valuation doesn't automatically equal a good product, let alone one that will gain market traction. This cautionary tale highlights the importance of stakeholder strategies for better design. Here are three key approaches that could help most organisations design better UX through stakeholder engagement: The Art of Saying 'No': Creating a culture where constructive criticism is welcomed, not punished. Asking Better Product Discovery Questions: Digging deep to uncover true user needs and pain points. Conducting Pre-Mortems: Anticipating potential failures before they occur (and being allowed to voice those concerns). I’m noticing an increase in the number of conversations I’m having about DesignOps Maybe it is the time of the year — people thinking about how they are set up for 2025? Some of the many areas as to why people are looking to DesignOps - tracking / reviewing the defined the process in how it’s consistently rolled out across different disciplines - creating the right teams structure, accountabilities & roles with the right progression framework - optimising and building on work to date around design maturity & design reviews - wanting to create new engagement models around innovation & PoCs - setting up ritual & meetings to establish communities of practice - reducing ‘busy work’ for LT and others as it scales down - making the best use of budget (+ cost savings) - solid growth foundations People are recognising it as one of the best things they can invest in The problem? Not knowing: - where to start - the areas that should be prioritised - how to do it without a DesignOps team (or any extra capacity in the team generally) - what will have the most impact As a result, am currently working with a few people to support leaders in these areas So if you are thinking about it / struggling let me know Too much to share on a post right now but very happy to have a chat about it! #Design #DesignOps #DesignLeadership

In July, UX/UI design briefs saw their biggest position drop ever. Falling from its usual position in our top three down to sixth place, this represents a huge shift in ‘typical’ demand on our platform. This category was our highest performing, both value- and volume-wise, in 2023, and so it comes as a shock to see its investment deplete so suddenly this month. It made up over double of the amount of briefs in January as it did this month (13% compared to 6.3%). Newsflash ... when it comes to your case studies in your UX portfolio, don't focus on the length of it. Instead, focus on the quality and how long it feels. A presentation that is 5 slides long could be really hard to read and extremely boring if each slide is full of dense text. On the flip side, a presentation that is 15 slides long could be very engaging and easy to follow if it's written well AND the visual design allows for the content to be easy to skim and scan. Don't believe those people who say there's a law that a UX case study must be this many words or that many slides. Now of course, let's use some common sense to. It's likely that a 40 slide presentation might be a bit too long. Designers are being exploited. I've become increasingly concerned with the state of design hiring processes since my first redundancy back in 2021, and I fear we've reached breaking point (at least I have). Today, we're talking about design tasks. It's now commonplace for potential employers to ask jobseekers to complete an unpaid "task" during the selection process. These so-called tasks usually require days of work, and often involve creating designs that the company genuinely needs and could potentially use without payment or permission. This leaves designers in an impossible position: should we leave our dignity at the door, comply, and get used (after all, we're #Desperate for work) - or say no and hope the next company, if there is one, has morals? It's also hard to spend limited time on a task, when you know you're up against other designers who may simply spend longer on it and therefore be selected to move forward, based solely on their "effort" rather than skills. The good news is (unless you sign something to the contrary) any work you create for these tasks belongs to you, even if you use their branding. I've already made several posts documenting tasks I've been asked to produce in full, so if you're interested in seeing just how much we're being asked for, check out my older content. One company I was a huge fan of ghosted me after I completed a week's worth of work for them. I'm now saying no to tasks, full stop. If none of us comply with their unethical practices, they'll be forced to do something radical: judge us based on our portfolios and CVs that have taken years to curate. Wouldn't that be something?
