Euromonitor International’s Financial and Investment Services Practice is proud to publish the first series of its Financial Services Quarterly Reports. This first set of reports discusses the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the health on five major sectors in the first quarter of FY2020. COVID-19 has caused significant disruptions and tightening of financial conditions across businesses.

Our first series of Financial Services Quarterly Reports leverages our global industry expertise, extensive in-house data and financial knowledge in order to assess the financial strength and resilience of leading global companies across five major industries.

Financial strength and resilience of the leading companies are contextualised using different performance metrics such as current ratio, working capital, EBITDA, industry turnover, net profit margin and return on assets margin. Such analysis is tailored to help companies assess the scale and magnitude of COVID-19 on short-term objectives (in order to respond) while keeping an eye on long-term performance (in order to recover and thrive).

With uncertainty around how and when the COVID-19 curve starts to flatten across different global economies, we expect subsequent quarterly editions to speak to financial aftermath, recovery and opportunities across these industries during and post disruption.

  • Brazil's Business Environment: Consumption in Economic Slowdown

    Euromonitor International

On the surface, Brazil looks like an attractive market. It is the seventh largest economy globally and has a population of 200 million, with high consumer expenditure and high demand for commodities.
But Brazilians are spending less, industrial confidence is deteriorating, and inflation is rising, meaning a future of slow growth and economic recovery.

Brazilians are spending less, industrial confidence is deteriorating, and inflation is rising, meaning a future of slow growth and economic recovery.

Consumer goods companies operating in Brazil need to adapt their strategy to integrate the global market place. What are the reasons behind this slowdown and how can organisations work it to their advantage?

Over the last decade, Brazil benefitted from a favourable macroeconomic environment as rising global demand for commodities sparked an export and consumption explosion. As consumption gained traction, consumer expenditure reached 63% of total GDP in 2014, up from 53%
    in 2004.

This scenario has shifted and the Brazilian economy is expected to contract in 2015, which will likely soften consumer demand. All evidence suggests that this consumption-led model has reached an exhaustion point. Since 2012, Brazil’s economy has lagged behind both developed and emerging countries.

We have identified possible reasons behind this deceleration in Brazil’s economy and have insights on how consumers are likely to react, as a new reality takes shape and the lack of visibility worsens future expectations.

At the end of 2011, a Public Policy/Public Economics paper was written entitled "Economia Politica do Bolsa Família: Evidências dos Municípios"

    The abstract is as follows:

"In order to test for effects of political competition and elite capture in Brazil, we analyzed the per capita spending on welfare and infrastructure for 4,009 Brazilian municipalities in the years 2004 and 2008, using panel data. The results are consistent with the hypothesis of the existence of a "political party effect", since we verified a reduction in welfare spending when the municipality had an elected mayor of the PT, given the level of family allowance from Bolsa Família. The data also indicate the existence of the "elite capture" effect, for there is a reduction in welfare spending the more unequal is the municipality. Finally, we present some possible alternative allocations for public spending after the reduction of welfare spending, when Bolsa Família benefit is offered."
