I've had a number of people congratulate me recently on the success of ESM Operations Ltd. Whilst I'm very very proud of what we have all achieved, I've made some huge mistakes along the way. Here's a few....... 1. Company Name - I've changed the company name 3 times due to the business evolving & growing. Its taken me 5 years to understand that the brand / logo is the most important aspect & that should be your consistent. 2. Finance - I never structured a proper finance department and there comes a point when your business grows that this becomes an essential. The right finance team actually save you alot of money throughout the year & I wish I'd done it sooner. 3. Insurances & Legal - I've always had insurance and legal advice but in the last 12 months I've invested heavily in better insurance policies and legal teams for more protection. Find a good consultant or experienced individual to guide you through this. 4. Uniforms - again trail and error. Spent alot of money on kit that wasn't fit for purpose. Its worth time and effort seeking the right supplier & get the right quantity & quality - its worth the investment. 5. Marketing - I'm still useless at it but it absolutely needs investment as it does pay off. Give this proper consideration & investment. 6. Workforce - The best or most qualified people are not always the right fit for your business. It's taken me a few years to understand that personalities and staff morale are essential to a happy workforce. I try to find motivated people that we can train & educate who have the right personality & work ethic to fit into the team. 7. Industry colleagues - The amount of industry people that want to see you fail is unreal. I want to see everyone succeed, there is enough work & money out there for us all and people driven by greed or jealousy that actively go out of their way to damage personal or business reputations have no place in my life. 8. Cash Flow - This takes some getting used to. I'm a risk adverse individual as I'm petrified of not having enough money to pay my staff or bills so I have made some poor financial decisions and not invested into things when I should as I didn't want to take the risk. ESM would be double in size had I done it. 9. Family - I gave up large portions of my daughters childhood being away from home to build a business. Something I hugely regret and have worked hard to put right these last 12 months. It's essential you prioritise your time with family, friends etc Hopefully this helps anyone new to business or thinking of starting up. I'm absolutely no expert, I'm still learning everyday, these are just my own personal failings.

I have completed my Level 4 Business Analysis apprenticeship with Multiverse as sponsored by Goldman Sachs! Marketing and Business Analysis might not seem to sit naturally at first, but Marketing touches the entire scope of a business. For example, Marketing looks to improve communication and so see the purchase process from the initial contact with customer services or the business unit managers all the way through to shipping. We deal with logistics when moving event or promotional materials, or adding ‘stuffers’ to packages, so see the packing and shipping process. We are involved in trademarks and cross over with legal departments. We use multiple software platforms in the business, including using the online content platforms, the product databases and other software, and so have close ties with IT to understand their issues and pain points. We run campaigns, working with Sales, Data, Finance, and more. Understanding where there is an opportunity to improve and being able to codify it, understand the ramifications and give recommendations seems pretty worthwhile. And it's always good being able to work across the spectrum in a business.

Is it too early to put up my Christmas tree? (And yes, I know this isn't Facebook - but bear with me; I have a business point) Organizing a B2B event is a bit like plannig for the holidays - requires careful planning and preperation. From securing a venue all the way to waving your delegates goodbye, every step is vital and every step builds on the next. Staying on track ensures a seamless experience for attendees, speakers, and partners. I really enjoyed being interviewed by the fantastic Bryan Dobson today, when I was a panelist at the 3 Senses lunchtime event in association with Carlow County Council's, Local Enterprise Office. The aim of this discussion was for panelists to share insights from their careers that might help to inspire others. Like any of us, there is always something we have learned along the way that we can share and I am never short of a word or two!! My final point during the discussion linked to AI, and how it seems to be the topic of the day, I have become fascinated with finding out more and more about it. However, I sometimes (and maybe unpopularly) think that we can and do over hype technology. Of course, it has a place and some very obvious benefits. There is no doubt that it can augment human intelligence and automating and digitizing data and repetitive tasks is a no brainer. However, I frequently find myself thinking back to when I submitted my thesis for my Masters degree, 20 years ago this year! At that time, ERP systems were new ...... all the rage! SAP was going to change the world of business and the common parlance was that jobs would be lost hand over first, applications like SAP were going to run our organisations for us, faster and better than ever before. Fast forward 20 years, there is certainly no doubt that systems like SAP have augmented our intelligence and possibly made managing our businesses easier but it certainly didn't replace humans. If anything, we now need even more (expensive) humans to interact with this beast that is now running our companies! For me, its simple, business is human, it always has been and it always will be. I am willing to bet that in 20 years, we will look back and agree on that fact. AI and its in-laws will have changed things considerably but people will still be the most important part of business. Which brought me back to a quote that I put on the very front page of that thesis back in 2004; “The future of business, is neither analogue nor digital, its human. To succeed in business, you must seek out partners who are trustworthy and be trustworthy yourself”! (this is me in the pic with Bryan Dobson and my long suffering husband, Keith Jones, who showed up to listen to me today, even though he can listen to me at home for free! 😄)
