Time to Reach // Over four days of Planet Assemblies I hosted at Hay Festival, groups of strangers shared ideas, connections and action around circular economy, food, transport and health. In just a couple of hours, the quality of insights and action was reaffirming and grew hope for what's possible when we release communities' ability to reach out and collaborate to co-design the better futures we desperately need. I chatted with Prof Sir David King in the Green Room, asking him about the highest priority for inspiring young people to take action in this space. His sure answer was connection to nature. The exciting development of BiRD Lab - the Biomimicry & Regenerative Design Lab at Green School Bali with Benjamin Freud, Ph.D. Charlotte Hankin Denise DeLuca Frank Burridge and Dr Kevin House, FCCT, FRSA is driving the creation of new design approaches that help learners of all ages ask better questions of each other, non-human and unborn generations about the ambition we need to set for our reach, and find ways of learning from nature to shape the actions and relationships that can drive transformation. We must reach out more confidently, and with more stamina than ever before, and connect our voices, spirit and energy to drive change at the startling and radical scale that's needed. #climate #biodiversity #regeneration #legacy

It is great that the #UK Labour Party is committing to make up for the lost climate goal ground under the conservatives. 💪🏻 Carbon Brief has put together an excellent program. However, it is imperative that site abandonment, remediation, and reclamation of the #NorthSea well, pipeline, and facility sites be a PRIMARY goal to achieve a successful transition. We know we have leakage and sites that are producing when they need not be. Let’s see the oil and gas industries 2050 phase out plans in step with the Paris Agreement! 🙏🏻🤝 #ukpoli #worldpoli #cdnpoli #uspoli

80 NGOs have signed an open letter saying that carbon credits undermine climate action. In my opinion, this is absolutely right. To reduce emissions we need to apply the mitigation hierarchy and avoid then reduce emissions. Offsets with carbon credits are the last step for hard to abate areas but they're often sold as the first step to enable companies to continue without change. We need to do the hard work first. Based on the posts and comments I've seen. This has really put the Science Based cat among the carbon credit pigeons.

With COP 29 taking place next month it’s good to see the Climate Change Committee advising that we need to increase our 2035 National Carbon Reduction Target from 78% to 81% (from the emission levels of 1990). This is to ensure that we play our part in meeting the Paris Accord targets. Four things I particularly like in this advice are: ·        Developing a comprehensive plan to decarbonise public sector buildings. ·        Publish a Green Skills Strategy to support the transition to net zero. ·        Ensuring that low carbon electricity is cheaper to promote uptake. ·        Planning reforms to make the installation of low carbon technologies easier. https://lnkd.in/eRy5mGxy

A big day for Regenerative Futures Fund today! We now have £4.75m committed from a group of funders - which is absolutely mind blowing. This is new money committed by funders who want to take a system change approach to tackling the roots of poverty, racism and the climate emergency in Edinburgh. The most incredible amount of work has gone into this achievement by so many including my colleagues in each funding org. Lots more about this soon - about what it takes to get to this stage. This is part of the overall £15m 10-year pooled fund. The funding committed by the founding funders is contingent on a contribution (of money plus their time and a commitment to change) by the local authority - City of Edinburgh Council. After an in-principle decision to support this over the long-term was made by Policy & Sustainability Committee in August (plus three papers Jan, May and Aug - and a number of briefings between January and now) today City of Edinburgh Councillors will make a decision on their contribution.
