I had the pleasure of joining Lou Paskalis, Tim Brown and the Association of National Advertisers to attempt to move the needle on buying quality media in lieu of cheap CPM inventory of questionable origin. Our panel dialogue, "Is the Programmatic Juice Worth the Squeeze," concluded it is because, among other things, quality media produces outcome metrics that matter. Drilling in specifically on news media -- a publishing category that continues to be in a world of hurt, Lou writes in AdExchanger that "... many presenters attempted to debunk the myth that brands that advertise adjacent to divisive or provocative content risk exposing themselves to backlash. Stagwell Global released research that showed virtually no difference in purchase intent for brands when their ads appeared next to editorial content, whether it was inflammatory or not. The question remains: Will marketers overcome their gut feelings in light of compelling research to the contrary?" I am always encouraged by this type of research, but I've come to expect that I'll be discouraged by the lack of change in media spend across trusted, professional journalism. IMHO, what we need to demonstrate *in addition to* these consumer sentiment findings is the hard data that shows equal or better RoAS (or other measurable outcome metrics) in the news content category. Evidence supports my hypothesis of better results in news vs. other content categories. For example, one recent TRUSTX advertiser experienced a 2.5x decrease in cost-per-acquisition on a campaign that was 59% targeted within news domains. News works because it's a lean-in environment where the audience is actively engaged. I am begging brands to give news a second chance. And not because its any advertiser's duty to save journalism, but because the stuff just works.

Travis Lusk Good to see you highlighting this report again. It needs to remain in the spotlight even at the risk of repetition for those already aware. Bill must be able to recite this blindfold. Yes, we need more advertisers adopting the extremely comprehensive playbooks in the report and hopefully they will. Education is the key. But more than anything we need the big agency groups to gradually wean themselves off the drug of easy money from programmatic trading, arbitrage and undisclosed margins. No agency group has supported the study and they won't, so advertisers have to make it clear that they won't allow this to continue and then work through new compensation methods that work for both parties. Trying to fix this problem without addressing fees and performance-led rewards is not going to shift the needle. Bill Duggan Association of National Advertisers

Is there more to growth than mental and physical availability? This week saw the launch of a new report from Kantar offering a 'blueprint for brand growth'. We asked Jane Ostler onto the WARC podcast to explain more. In short, the model identifies three "growth accelerators". Two are sort-of-like the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute's mental and physical availability: 1) Predispose more people 2) Be more present (Though Jane explains how their definitions take in more components than communications and distribution.) The third one - 'Find new space' - puts more emphasis on innovation, new usage occasions, expansion into new categories etc etc. What I found interesting was Jane's comments about the blend being different depending on what a marketer's starting point is. Sounds obvious - but the 'it depends' point has potentially got lost as the industry has fixed on more general, industry-wide benchmarks or averages. Worth a listen - link in comments.

What happens when retail media overtakes TV advertising? Last week, George Nott at The Grocer published a really comprehensive article on the current state of Retail Media in the UK. Here's some of the highlights: - Supermarkets have long worked with brands on ‘shopper marketing’, and since the launch of loyalty schemes in the 1990s have been sharing data insights. So, if that's the case, where is retail media up to in its evolution? According to Nick Ashley of Tesco Media & Insights Platform, retail media is only now “coming of age“ - it’s not the toddler some talk about. But it’s not an adult yet either - it's in its teenage years. I like this way of thinking about it. - Retail media innovation is at its fastest pace yet & this is presenting challenges and opportunities for advertisers, and their agencies. To assess each, Marketing Directors should be making sure they have a retail media measurement strategy in place, to compare activations across platforms consistently and quickly to allow them to redirect investment to the most effective places. It’s a good time now to be intentional about experimentation. - The IAB is working towards standardised metrics to enable “consistent comparisons” across retail media investments for buyers, initially covering online media but eventually in-store. Tools are emerging, too, to help advertisers assess retail media opportunities – among them Plan-Apps, which is used by the likes of PepsiCo, Diageo, AB InBev, Mondelez and CCEP. - Retail Media is sparking a wave of creative collaboration. Supermarkets are open-eared to ambitious campaigns. So happy to have spoken at Viva Technology this afternoon on lead generation in the media industry. It’s always a complex (but rather priveledged) task to market an organisation with such a diversified revenue portfolio. I shared some thought-starters on how to simplify complex sales messaging in order to tell one coherent story to the market. Got great questions from a very animated audience on how to successfully engage with a c-level audience, renewing an audience of decision-makers post-election, how to manage potential clashes between different sales teams (didn’t really prep for that one), and how to work collaboratively with newsrooms to promote a B2B service. 'Proprietary Media' (or 'Principal) is a hot potato in our industry right now. A new report from the Association of National Advertisers is a great, in-depth guide to the pros and cons, with very good recommendations for advertisers. Here I go into the cons and cons and argue that it is bad for everyone and ultimately the Media Agencies themselves. I call it 'unprincipled' media. As the WFA meets in Toronto for Global Marketer Week the health of the advertising industry should be on the agenda. Advertisers may not be able to solve issues such as climate change, but they can take actions with a more immediate impact on the well-being of the people who service their needs through how they spend their money. Is X’s future at risk? A new report from research firm Kantar shows that a record number of brands plan to reduce their ad spending on X in 2025. This is due to worries about extreme content and brand safety. This is bad news for X, which has already lost many advertisers since Elon Musk took over in 2022. Key points from the report: • 26% of marketers plan to cut their ad spending on X in 2025. This is the largest drop among major global ad platforms. • Only 4% of marketers feel X ads offer “brand safety.” • Consumers have a more positive view of ads on X because there are fewer of them. This suggests advertisers may be shifting their budgets to other platforms. • X didn’t make the top 10 for trust and innovation, showing it has work to do to regain marketers’ confidence. Musk’s efforts to win back advertisers, like his appearance at Cannes Lions in June, haven’t worked. His lawsuit against an ad industry group and his comments on X have also hurt the platform’s image. With brands exploring other options, X’s future is uncertain. Can it regain advertisers’ trust and turn things around? Are you still advertising on X? I personally see the emergence of new platforms and solutions for Digital Advertising.
