💡 ⚽ The Power of Partnerships in Production ⚽ 💡 Strong relationships with vendors and suppliers are more important than ever in today's fast-paced world. I want to Thank Canon EMEA and BPS - Broadcast & Production Services for their incredible support in helping us elevate IMG's production values to new heights for the EFL (English Football League). Around three years ago, we set out to continue pushing the boundaries of how we approach traditional football production. I shared my vision with various suppliers, and Canon EMEA (via BPS) was one of the companies that truly understood what we were aiming for. They generously provided us with two Canon CR-X300 outdoor PTZ machines for a year, enabling us to showcase the potential of what could be achieved. With these UHD cameras and integrating the Elgato Streamdecks (Supplied by BPS) to control the PTZ cameras, we transformed our 7-camera EFL Championship production into a setup that rivals a 15+ camera operation. Canon and BPS took a risk on us, resulting in a successful sale and a strengthened partnership. A huge thank you to Jono O'Reilly, Lee Streeter, Jamie (and others at BPS, I'm sure), and then the Team at Canon Barry Griffin, Dani, Mark Szeliga, Ibuki Nagao, for believing in our vision and helping us bring it to life. Last July Adwanted UK partnered with Digital Cinema Media to introduce a new report into Adwanted Connected's AV app - Cinema TVR Forecasts. By providing access to TVR forecasts for all major upcoming film releases, we are aligning cinema with other AV channels and simplifying the media planning process. Working with DCM once more, we're enhancing the report so Adwanted Connected users get TVR forecasts every month (just in time for the summer blockbuster season!) as well as new data on when films are expected to stop screening. We have more upgrades coming shortly, including additional demographic audiences and downloadable reports. For anyone wanting to explore cinema advertising, there are lots of other handy features including a UK film calendar, the latest cinema news and DCM resources. 📺 Changes in commercial broadcasting. Our new research highlights how the UK media landscape has shifted in 2023 and 2024. Overall, audiences remain pleased with public service broadcasters (PSBs), as seven in 10 viewers say they are satisfied with the service. Total commercial TV and online revenue grew slightly to £15.6bn, but commercial PSBs saw a significant decline in revenue, and digital multichannels are dropping below 2020 levels. Interestingly, while overall ad spend rose by 5.3%, it was primarily driven by online growth. PSBs also reduced spending on new TV content, largely due to fewer major sports events compared to 2022. But we also found that the TV set is still central in bringing the nation together for big moments such as the Euros or the Olympics. Everywhere the broadcast landscape is shifting inexorably from linear to digital and with it the nature of the distribution infrastructure from over the air to internet. But the UK is a beacon in continuing to want to enshrine universal access to public broadcast channels from the BBC, ITV and others. The report points out that even though Digital Terrestrial and satellite delivered households are declining, the resilience of live TV as a shared cultural experience for key moments such as cultural and sporting events has not gone away. While every household in the UK has the right to ‘decent affordable’ internet connection of at least 10 Mbit/s this would be put under strain if there were a sudden switchover to IP. Without greater advances in compression, superfast broadband speed (30 Mbit/s) is more likely to provide a reliable viewing experience but that will cost capital investment. Ofcom point out that if investment or technology advance is not forthcoming then broadband speeds would not be sufficient for a reliable IPTV viewing experience making any imminent abandonment of DTT unlikely. An interesting article from IBC about the IT / Broadcast engineer background in our industry. We all know that "broadcast engineer" meant something quite specialised, but that has become less obvious with the adoption of large, cloud-based systems and broadcast/IP standards like SMPTE2110. However, while a CAR now looks more like a NOC, the very specific demands of delivering extremely high quality video and audio to millions are still present. So it's never as simple as IT vs. Broadcast: it's a blend. Good engineers are good engineers. Excellent commentary from Roger C. Lanctot in Radio World about the huge opportunity large screens in the vehicle offer radio. Roger noted that, "the task for the broadcast industry is to give carmakers the tools to deliver the radio industry into a future defined by visually enhanced in-car listening with interactive and geographically tagged advertising experiences." This is something that Xperi Inc. technologies can help broadcasters do, including "enabling a new world of once-unimagined advertising attribution" by localizing anonymized listening data by geography and daypart. Our Sustainability in Media 101 training benefited from a wide range of speakers from across the media industry such as James Stellpflug of EVS Broadcast Equipment. "We have a huge part to play in what we do as vendors, how we advocate for this and how we transform." James shared EVS' approach to sustainability as an initiative from the ground up that encompasses the entire business rather than being a side project. The most important part: involving every employee so they understand the goals and the role they have to play. EVS started the process with benchmarking in order to identify areas for improvement and being able to move the needle with measures they would put into place. With this mission and positive results generated, as a technology vendor, EVS inspires others to do the same. The session also features Benjamin Schwarz of Greening of Streaming (GOS), a non-profit member-driven organisation that was born out of the need to address sustainability in the streaming space - with a current lack of initiatives in place. Ben goes into detail on how GOS is working to create low energy sustainable streaming.
