The critical importance of the cement industry for the UK has been a cornerstone of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association conference this year and repeated again by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero chief scientific officer today. Through the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) partnership with the Peak Cluster we will decarbonise over 40% of the UK’s cement and lime production providing net zero construction solutions at home, and abroad via exports, securing jobs and creating growth.

The Energy Transition is a big deal and very important to our everyday lives so it’s vital that as a country we get it right. The gas facts document highlights some key details that are not always discussed but essential to a sustainable (in every meaning of the word) transition. We cannot just turn gas off and renewables on which is why we need both in the interim and to manage the transition. Kellas is both operating the safe and efficient gas infrastructure whilst developing lower carbon alternatives such as blue and green hydrogen. Through my background in the Steel Industry and especially SSI on Teesside I’m aware of some of the tough consequences of getting this wrong.

Our consultation to introduce a common consent solution to the energy sector has just gone live! This work builds on the recommendations of the Energy Digitalisation Taskforce. We believe that access to consumer data in the sector needs a refresh, with consumers given greater control over who has access to their data. The solution should also empower consumers to share their energy data with companies who want to help them navigate the energy transition, as we have seen through Open Banking. Tailoring deals to consumers' specific needs will help reduce the complexity of a net zero energy system. We're not the right organisation to deliver this solution and we're looking to the energy sector to deliver. Our analysis suggests that the Retail Energy Code Company are best placed to deliver this solution, but we want to hear from you. The consultation is open for 8 weeks, closing on the 4th October. We hope that anyone with an interest in consumer data and how it's used will take the time to read and respond to our proposals. In 2020 energy hubs was just an idea. Fast forward 4 years and we have a demonstrable understanding on how energy hubs could play a pivotal role in the important brown to green energy transition. Without ambition, scale and collaboration we will build an inefficient future energy system. Bringing the energy hubproject and hydrogen backbone projects together it’s easy to realise the scale of ambition and more importantly, the scale of the opportunity.
