Unfortunately, I don't think inflation is going to stay around 2% for long. Many will recall that the inflation spike which hit the UK had many of its roots in freight costs as many of our consumer goods are imported. From late 2020, following the lift of lockdowns, demand spiked and rates exploded, with a 40 foot container rising from USD 1,500 to USD 17,000. Rates did fall back over time and returned to normal levels last Spring/Summer. Following the Houti attacks in the Red Sea from last December, and ship diversions around the Cape, rates rose but the longer sailing times and strong buyer demand have led to a container shortage so now a 40 foot for early June is over USD 6,000 with more rate increases expected. May-Jul is usually low season for container rates so I predict we'll soon see USD 10,000/40 (by Aug/Sep) and higher in Oct/Nov. Word to Andrew Bailey, inflation is back with a vengeance.

☀ Great first week back Unipart Logistics following on from a very relaxing holiday. 📖 Unfortunately, It's the only time I get to catch up on some of the amazing books that I have planned to read throughout the year. The stand out one this year has to be this one! The Diary Of A CEO by Steven Bartlett ANYONE in business and a leadership role I would recommend you take the time to read this and think about how you implement some of the great ideas into your business and teams. Some of the points I have taken away (too many to mention them all): 💡 Fill your 5 buckets in the right order (What you know, What you can do, Who you know, What you have, What they think of you) 😡 Never Disagree (yes coming from me) - Our words should be bridges to comprehension not barriers to connection. Disagree less, understand more 👻 You must lean into Bizarre Behavior - In a ever changing world (and industry like supply chain) you have to be a LEAN IN person/business. Taking no risks will be your biggest risk, you have to risk failure to succeed, you have to risk the ordinary to achieve the extraordinary and... if you live avoiding risk, you're risking missing out on life and new business (I added that last part Steven Bartlett sorry) 💻 (Good one for marketing) - Normality is ignored but Absurdity sells.... Avoid wallpaper at all costs! 😅 Most of all and aligned to the Unipart Group philosophy is. YOU MUST SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF. As the worlds leading Supply Chain company in Kaizen and Lean, its about day to day improvements, the 1% and compound effect it has. If you don't care about tiny details you will produce bad work because good work is the culmination of hundreds of tiny details. The worlds most successful people and businesses all sweat the small stuff! For anyone that hast received today’s Windsor Framework update from HMRC… Yet more delays… Dear customer, The Windsor Framework establishes a new set of arrangements for the movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland via both parcels and freight. The government is fully committed to implementing the Windsor Framework in good faith and protecting the UK’s internal market. There has been extensive work already in preparing for these arrangements to take effect. However, as our ongoing engagement with you has recognised, several events since then, including the General Election and the pre-election period, have impacted on the preparations of traders and the border industry. We recognise that more time will therefore be required to ensure full readiness for the new arrangements; and acknowledge the challenges posed for systems changes by the peak period over the Christmas period will constrain the ability to make detailed systems changes. As such, the new arrangements under the Windsor Framework for parcels and freight movements that were envisaged to come into effect from 30‌‌‌ ‌‌September 2024 will now not take effect on this date. While we will provide further information on the detailed timeline for the coming into effect of the new arrangements in due course, businesses should be fully prepared for them by 31‌‌‌‌‌March 2025. Over the next few months, we will continue to work with you to ensure you are ready for when the arrangements take effect in 2025. It will be important that this work intensifies to ensure that implementation is smooth and that businesses are fully prepared. This will include webinars, with specific webinars for businesses moving parcels, and ongoing support through the Trader Support Service (TSS) for freight movements. The TSS will continue to be available throughout 2025 to support your transition to the new Windsor Framework arrangements. Are sennder bottom feeding? Or setting themselves up to become a European powerhouse? For those who missed it, sennder announced their intention to acquire C.H. Robinson’s European business. Yes, that C.H. Robinson. The one that had been consistently smashing its head against a wall before restructuring and turning to “AI”-enabled solutions. Who else have they acquired? Uber Freight Europe. Yes, that Uber Freight, that has just announced another bad quarter and is trying to impose itself as a “Transportation management and TMS provider”. sennder have expanded their footprint rapidly through M&A. The question now is, what do they plan to do from this position? They need to consolidate their position and actually start improving their technology and capabilities. And start figuring out what growth looks like without giving up 10% equity in the company to get a deal across the line. Or spending millions on M&A whenever a struggling US company decides to shed their European business. There are so many potential outcomes here. Some riding on sennder. Others riding on the direction the industry takes. I believe that their success will be decided by their tech. If it can become the control tower for shippers, and the operating system for carriers, they may win big. Because software is sticky, especially when done right and providing value. Whereas being a middleman will come down to maintaining the network and cheap prices. My concern is that their current business model doesn't fund this approach well, as the usual approach would be to fund the stranglehold through high tech revenues. I also strongly doubt their tech's capabilities and ability to handle rate fluctuations and other connectivity and automation dependent issues. The UK government is implementing a new Customs Declaration Service (CDS), and the June 4 deadline for exporters to switch from the older CHIEF system is fast approaching. However, according to Agency Sector Management, with less than a month away, up to a third of exporters still need to make the switch. HMRC will only grant a four-week extension in exceptional circumstances, so it’s important to make sure you’ve made the change before the cutoff date. In a nutshell, airlines based in Africa, Latin America and North America gained market share between 2018 and 2023, and North American carriers gained the most traffic share of any region during this time, expanding from 23.8% to 26.9% of total world traffic. Middle East-based carriers, amazingly, were almost flat in terms of market share, while carriers based in Asia/Pacific and Europe lost market share. The carriers which endured the biggest drops in cargo traffic included SAS, Hainan Airlines, Thai Airways, SriLankan Airlines and American Airlines. But the causes of those drops are varied.
