20 Days to the next Budget - Great to see clarity finally being achieved for the abolition of the Lifetime Allowance (announced 18 months ago) with two sets of regulations published to fix flaws in the legislation. Tax-free pension lump sums can now be paid with certainty. Here's to hoping that we don't have yet more changes to pensions tax forced through at breakneck speed. Stability is vital in helping everyone save for their retirement.

I struggle to come in under 5,000 words when describing how things can go wrong post-M&A. But, here goes! Companies and legal entities are like people, they come with baggage. Sometimes that baggage is simple to fix, but sometimes it’s more complicated. > Tax audits > Litigation > HR disputes > Licenses > Contracts > Compliance issues The list goes on (and on and on and on and on………). I often get asked about the tax treatment for a director or employee of a company who receives medical benefits… so thought it would be useful to summarise… An annual medical well man (or woman) can be provided… but the benefit must be offered to all employees… you can put in restrictions about length of service to qualify though… If an employee is unfit for work for over 28 days you can pay up to £500 per year to help an employee to get back to work. And although payments for UK medical insurance are a taxable benefit… if you are working abroad… overseas medical insurance isn’t taxable… And if you work with a computer the company can pay for your eye tests without triggering a benefit and if you need a specific prescription for computer work… the company can also pay for the cost of the glasses… get the vat back… and no benefit in kind… just get the optician to note that on the invoice Reading that summary… what strikes me… is how ungenerous the benefits are… #medicalbenefits
