A recent outbreak of Monkeypox has sparked growing global discussion, with particular concern in the UK, where over 40 cases were confirmed in July 2024. This resurgence is drawing comparisons to the SARS-CoV-19 pandemic due to the similar measures required for isolation and the uncertainties surrounding the virus. The lack of comprehensive knowledge about Monkeypox a cause for concern, as despite being identified decades ago, there are still critical gaps in our understanding. Monkeypox, a zoonotic disease, typically spreads from animals to humans. However, this outbreak has outlined the virus's ability to transmit from human to human through direct contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials. This mode of transmission poses a significant challenge in today’s densely populated and highly connected urban environments, where infectious diseases can spread rapidly. We, the team at CellCentric, are pioneering a new approach to treat multiple myeloma, with an oral p300/CBP inhibitor drug, inobrodib. Huge progress has been made in treating the disease, particularly with recent antibody-based therapies (BCMA targeting agents, TCEs). But 75% of people diagnosed still die of the condition. Beyond and alongside existing approaches, there is a need for oral agents with novel modes of action. Community based delivery also helps address health inequities, meeting the needs of people who are not suitable or able to access more complex treatments in specialist centres. New financing maintains full momentum to registration studies. RA Capital Management and Pfizer Ventures now join Morningside as shareholders. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a serious threat to global public health. The UK government has recently announced a new action plan to combat AMR, which includes support for industries to develop new treatments. I believe that a similar action plan is needed in India. AMR is a major problem in India, and it is essential that we take steps to address it. The Indian government should provide support to industries for the development of new treatments and diagnostics for AMR. This could include financial incentives, such as tax breaks or grants, as well as regulatory support, such as fast-tracking the approval process for new drugs/diagnostics. Organisations like Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) are already doing it, but more is needed. The government and industries should also work to raise awareness of AMR among the public and healthcare professionals. This could be done through public health campaigns and educational programs. #publichealth #amr #policy Module Innovations

**Challenging Times for Pharma CROs** Since January, the preclinical contract research sector has faced significant challenges, with companies like Evotec, Wuxi Apptec, and Gingko Bioworks experiencing a sharp decline in their stock prices, ranging from 60% to 80%. Amidst this downturn, Charles River has managed to maintain stability. It is noteworthy that despite the well-publicized challenges faced by Wuxi Apptec, it has outperformed both Evotec and Gingko Bioworks, which are grappling with their own set of issues. This dramatic decrease in share prices appears to be linked to the broader contraction in big pharma headcount and layoffs. Reduced orders have led to diminished revenue and a slowdown in research activities, raising concerns about a potential vicious cycle for the contract research lab industry.

ALS Community, Scientists and Researchers - Look out! At Axol Bioscience we continue to build tools, infrastructure and assays that support “Better Human Disease Modeling” decrease time and risk of Drug Discovery in ALS and ultimately improve patients lives. Massive THANK-YOU to the Scottish Government for their continued support of Axol Bioscience through the awarding of this SMART Grant. The key objectives of this project are to: 1. Develop a quality manufacturing system for iPSC-derived ALS relevant cell types 2. Characterise and validate the cells using ALS relevant end points; TDP43 aggregation, Neurofilament Light elevation and Cryptic Exon Sequencing 3. Develop and characterise an ALS co-culture model which includes motor neurons, microglia and astrocytes 4. Commercialise an easy-to-use model system to drive forward ALS drug discovery The grant is part of a broader push to scale the impact of Scotland’s innovation strengths, with a focus on projects that contribute to economic transformation. It's great that iPSCs have been recognised by the Scottish Enterprise to be a part of this cause. This is such an important subject and a big thanks to British In Vitro Diagnostics Association (BIVDA) for raising it at a Parliamentary Reception this week. Getting innovations into the NHS is challenging, especially for SMEs who have limited resources and significant pressures from their investors to get sales. One of the unfortunate consequences of this is that SMEs are forced to focus their efforts on larger international markets with quicker pathways to adoption, and UK patients cannot access homegrown innovations. Surely there must be a way to reduce the barriers to adoption to ensure British innovations are available in their home market first? #skincancer #melanoma #diagnostic # innovation #AMBLor
